The practical challenge is gut tolerance. You cannot go from eating one gel per hour to three overnight. Gut training is a real physiological adaptation — your intestinal transporters upregulate with consistent practice. Start on training rides, build gradually, and by the time your event arrives your gut should handle the target intake without complaint.

The dual-transport model shows that glucose absorption via SGLT1 saturates at approximately 60g/hr. For a four-hour sportive, aim for 60-80g of carbs per hour from a mix of gels, bars, and drink mix. That means roughly one gel (25g) plus 500ml of carbohydrate drink (40-50g) per hour, or two gels and plain water. Lay out exactly what you will consume in each hour before the ride starts, and set timer reminders on your head unit.
Train your gut systematically over 4-8 weeks
Start at 40g of carbs per hour on your long training rides. Each week, increase by 10g. Practice with the exact products you will use in your event. If you experience GI distress at a given level, hold there for two weeks before trying to increase again. Most riders can reach 80-90g/hr within 6-8 weeks of consistent practice.
Choose products with the right glucose-to-fructose ratio
Look for gels, drink mixes, and bars that use maltodextrin (a glucose polymer) combined with fructose. Many modern sports nutrition brands (SiS Beta Fuel, Maurten, Precision Fuel) now formulate specifically for high carbohydrate intake with dual-transport ratios.
