Anthony's advice on helmets is direct: do not overthink the brand and do not underspend on fit. The safety standard is the same for every helmet on the shop shelf. The difference between a 60-pound helmet and a 200-pound helmet is weight, ventilation, and aesthetics — not protection. But a 200-pound helmet that fits poorly is worse than a 60-pound helmet that fits perfectly, because a helmet only works if it stays in place during an impact.

The one technology worth paying a premium for is MIPS or an equivalent rotational impact system. Real-world crashes involve rotational forces (your head sliding and rotating on tarmac), and standard helmets are tested only for direct linear impacts. MIPS adds a low-friction layer that allows the helmet to rotate slightly relative to your head during impact, reducing rotational forces on the brain. The premium is typically 15-30 GBP and the evidence supporting it is robust.

  1. Measure your head and try multiple brands in-store

    Measure the circumference of your head 2 cm above your eyebrows with a soft tape measure. Use this measurement to identify your size range. Then try helmets from at least 3-4 brands in-store — head shapes vary significantly (round vs oval) and the best helmet for you is the one that fits your specific head shape with minimal adjustment of the retention system.

  2. Check fit with the two-finger and shake tests

    Position the helmet level on your head with the front edge two finger-widths above your eyebrows. Tighten the retention dial until snug but not uncomfortable. Shake your head vigorously side to side and front to back — the helmet should move with your head, not independently. If it rocks or shifts, try a different size or brand.

  3. Prioritise MIPS or equivalent rotational protection

    When comparing two helmets with similar fit, choose the one with MIPS, WaveCel, SPIN, or Koroyd technology. These systems add 15-30 GBP to the price but provide meaningful protection against rotational brain injuries that the basic safety standard does not test for. How long does a cycling helmet last?
Most manufacturers recommend replacing helmets every 3-5 years due to gradual degradation of the EPS foam from UV exposure, sweat, and temperature cycling. Replace sooner if the helmet has been involved in any impact, the shell is cracked, or the foam is visibly compressed or crumbling.
Is MIPS worth the extra cost?
Yes. The premium is typically 15-30 GBP and the technology provides protection against rotational brain injuries that standard helmets do not address.
