A bright, flashing rear light is the difference between a driver seeing you at 200 metres and seeing you at 50 metres. That extra 150 metres of reaction time can be the margin between a safe pass and a collision.

The other piece that most people miss is reflective placement. A reflective jacket makes you visible from the front and rear, but drivers approaching from side roads see your profile — and a reflective jacket viewed side-on is a narrow strip. Reflective ankle bands, on the other hand, create a distinctive up-down pedalling motion that the human brain recognises instantly as a cyclist.
