Tubeless on road bikes is no longer a fringe choice — it is the default for most new mid-to-high-end wheels. The benefits are clear: fewer punctures, lower rolling resistance, and the ability to run lower pressures for better grip and comfort without risking pinch flats. The trade-off is a messier setup process and the need to top up sealant every 3-4 months.
The initial setup is the part people dread. It does not have to be difficult if you follow the process: clean rim, good tape, proper sealant amount, and enough air volume to pop the beads into the hooks. A floor pump with a boost chamber handles 90% of tyre and rim combinations. The remaining 10% need a compressor or a trip to the shop.
Once running, the maintenance is minimal. Check sealant levels every 3-4 months by deflating and breaking one bead to look inside. Top up with 30-60 ml if it has dried. Carry a spare inner tube on every ride as a backup — sealant handles small holes but not sidewall cuts.

Latex inner tubes close the gap but carry their own disadvantages — rapid air loss and higher puncture rates. Tubeless offers the best combination of low resistance, reliability, and puncture protection.

Tape the rim bed properly
Remove old rim tape. Clean the rim bed with isopropyl alcohol. Apply tubeless-specific rim tape (matched to your rim's internal width) in one continuous loop, overlapping the start by 10-15 cm. Press firmly over each spoke hole to ensure a complete seal. Poke through the valve hole with a sharp tool.
Install the valve and mount the tyre
Insert the tubeless valve through the tape and tighten the lockring firmly. Mount one bead of the tyre, pour in 30-60 ml of sealant (check manufacturer recommendation), then mount the second bead. Start opposite the valve and work around with your thumbs — tyre levers can damage the bead seal.
Seat the beads with rapid inflation
Attach a floor pump with boost chamber (or compressor) and inflate rapidly. You should hear the beads pop into the rim hooks — two distinct pings. Inflate to the tyre's maximum pressure to fully seat, then reduce to your riding pressure.
Distribute sealant and check for leaks
Rotate the wheel slowly in all orientations to coat the entire tyre interior with sealant. Spin the wheel and listen for air leaks. Small hissing from the bead or valve area often resolves as sealant reaches the leak. Leave overnight and check pressure in the morning.
