Tubeless road systems are common on current performance wheels, but the rim and tyre still need explicit approval for use together. Sealant can close some punctures and removing the tube removes the tube pinch-flat mode; it does not remove bead-retention, burping, rim-impact or pressure-limit constraints. The trade-off is a more involved setup and ongoing sealant maintenance.

Initial setup starts with the exact manuals: approved tyre, tape width and layers, valve, sealant quantity, mounting method and pressure ceiling. If the beads do not seat within those instructions, stop rather than adding uncontrolled compressor pressure and ask a qualified workshop to inspect the pairing.

Maintenance is system-specific. Check pressure before every ride and inspect sealant at the interval given by its maker, which changes with temperature, casing and product. Carry the repair supplies your wheel and tyre manufacturers permit; sealant will not close every cut.

  1. Tape the rim bed properly

    Follow the rim maker's cleaning, tape width, layer count, overlap and valve-hole instructions. Generic overlap or tape-width rules can conflict with a wheel manual. Replace damaged or lifted tape rather than trying to patch a high-pressure road system.

  2. Install the valve and mount the tyre

    Install the approved valve and mount the explicitly compatible tyre using the wheel and tyre instructions. Add the sealant maker's quantity for the measured tyre size; do not substitute a universal 30-60 ml dose. Use only permitted mounting tools so the bead and tape are not damaged.

  3. Seat the beads with rapid inflation

    Follow the wheel and tyre manuals. Use a compatible pump, boost chamber or regulated compressor only if permitted, add no more pressure than needed to seat the beads, and never exceed the lower maximum for the tyre-rim pair. Confirm the moulded bead line is even on both sides before reducing to the calculated riding pressure.

  4. Distribute sealant and check for leaks

    Distribute sealant exactly as its maker and the tyre maker instruct. Inspect the bead line, valve, tape and pressure retention before riding; persistent air loss needs diagnosis rather than an assumption that more sealant will resolve it.

What pressure should I run tubeless road tyres at?
There is no universal PSI reduction from a tubed setup. Use complete system weight, measured mounted width and surface to calculate separate front and rear starting points, then obey the exact tyre and rim limits. Tubeless removes the inner-tube pinch-flat mode but does not remove bead-retention, burping, rim-impact or support limits.
What happens if I get a puncture too big for sealant?
Stop safely and follow the tyre and wheel makers' permitted roadside-repair method. A compatible plug may repair some tread punctures, while other damage requires an approved tube or recovery. Do not ride a sidewall cut, damaged bead or visibly damaged rim, and do not assume one plug size can repair every hole.
How often do I need to add air?
Check pressure before every ride. Loss rate varies with casing, sealant, tape, valve, temperature and time; there is no universal weekly PSI figure. A sudden or persistent loss can indicate a leak that needs inspection rather than routine top-up.
Can I convert any wheel to tubeless?
Only wheels marked as tubeless-ready or tubeless-compatible should be used. Converting non-tubeless wheels with tape alone is unreliable and potentially dangerous because the rim bead hook profile may not retain the tyre under pressure.
Which sealant is best?
There is no universal best sealant. Use one approved by the tyre and wheel manufacturers, check whether it is suitable for your pressure, temperature and tyre casing, and follow its quantity and inspection interval. Do not mix sealants unless both manufacturers explicitly allow it.
Is tubeless worth it for a commuter?
It can be when small punctures are common and the compatible system is maintained. Sealant will not close every cut, so a commuter still needs pressure checks, sealant inspections and a backup repair plan. Compare that maintenance with the simplicity of a tubed setup for your route and skills.
