The biggest misconception about bunch sprints is that the fastest sprinter always wins. They do not. The rider who wins is the one in the right position, at the right time, with enough left to deliver their sprint when it matters. Anthony has spoken to multiple former professional sprinters on the podcast, and the consistent message is that positioning is a skill you practise — it is not instinct.

The practical training for bunch sprints is simulating the race scenario: riding at 90-95% of threshold for 2-3 minutes (mimicking the lead-out phase), then launching a 10-15 second all-out sprint. If you only ever train sprints from a fresh state, you will never develop the fatigue-resistant sprint that actually wins races. The other piece is simply practising in group rides — sitting third or fourth wheel, following surges, reading the road, and timing your move. This cannot be replicated on the turbo.

    The physiology of a bunch sprint is a two-phase demand: a sustained near-threshold effort during the lead-out, immediately followed by a maximal neuromuscular effort. Training must replicate this sequence — isolated standing-start sprints develop raw power but miss the metabolic pre-load that characterises actual race sprints. The rider who can sustain the highest percentage of peak power when already glycolytically stressed is the one who wins.

  1. Train race-simulation sprints from threshold effort

    Ride at 90-95% FTP for 3 minutes, then immediately launch a 12-15 second all-out sprint. Recover fully for 8-10 minutes and repeat 4-5 times. This trains your ability to produce peak power when your legs are already loaded with lactate, which is exactly the physiological state of a bunch sprint.

  2. Practise positioning on fast group rides

    On a Saturday chain gang or fast group ride, practise sitting in third or fourth position for the final 5 km. Observe how the front riders behave, practise following wheel movements without overreacting, and time practice surges for the final 300-500 metres. The tactical awareness only develops with repetition.

  3. Build a sprint-specific gym routine for explosive power

    Single-leg press, box jumps, and kettlebell swings develop the explosive hip extension that drives a sprint. Perform 3-4 sets of 4-6 reps with heavy load for single-leg press, and 3 sets of 5 box jumps, twice per week during the build phase. Reduce to once per week during race season to maintain without adding fatigue.

COMMON MISTAKES

WHAT CYCLISTS GET WRONG

  • MISTAKEOpening the sprint too early and fading before the line.

    FIXMost amateur sprints last 12-18 seconds at maximum. If you launch at 400 metres from the finish at 35 km/h, you have roughly 20 seconds of effort — too long to sustain peak power. For most amateurs, 200-250 metres is the correct launch point.

  • MISTAKEDrifting to the back of the group before the sprint.

    FIXMove up to third or fourth wheel by 2 km to go. Being in the top five positions entering the final kilometre is more important than having the highest peak power. Practise moving through a group smoothly and without wasting energy.

    FIXRace sprints happen at 38-45 km/h after sustained effort, not from zero speed while fresh. Train sprints from race-pace rolling speed and from a fatigued state to develop the specific capacity that bunch finishes demand.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How important is body weight for sprint performance?
Less important than for climbing. In a bunch sprint on flat terrain, absolute power matters more than watts per kilo because aerodynamic drag (not gravity) is the primary resistance. Heavier riders with higher absolute peak power have an advantage in flat sprints, which is why professional sprinters tend to be 75-85 kg.
Should I practise sprinting on the turbo trainer?
Turbo sprints develop the metabolic and muscular components but miss the bike-handling, positioning, and tactical elements that determine race results. Use the turbo for race-simulation sprint intervals (threshold-to-sprint efforts) but do your positioning practice outdoors in group rides.
What gear should I use for a bunch sprint?
Start one or two gears lighter than you think — the most common mistake is being over-geared and unable to accelerate quickly enough. You should be able to reach peak cadence (110-120 rpm) within 5-6 pedal strokes. If you bog down at 80 rpm for the first 3 seconds, shift to a lighter gear next time.
