The power duration curve is the most underused tool in amateur cycling. Most riders obsess over a single number — their FTP — when the curve tells a far richer story. It shows you exactly where your engine excels and where it falls short, and that information should drive your training priorities.

The practical application is simple: look at where your curve dips relative to the modelled prediction. If your 5-minute power is weak relative to your FTP, VO2max intervals will give you the biggest return. If your 1-minute power is strong but your 20-minute power is low, your aerobic engine needs more attention. Let the data direct the training rather than doing a bit of everything.

    The power duration curve is effectively a fingerprint of a rider's physiology. By comparing the shape of the curve to population norms and to the rider's own history, coaches can identify the specific energy systems that are limiting performance and prescribe training with precision rather than guesswork. The curve also reveals whether a rider's training has been appropriately varied or whether they have been neglecting certain durations.

  1. Generate your power duration curve in your analysis software

    In Intervals.icu, TrainingPeaks, or WKO5, plot your power duration curve for the last 90 days. Compare it to your all-time best curve. Identify the durations where the 90-day curve sits closest to and furthest from the all-time bests. The biggest gaps represent either detraining or untapped potential.

  2. Identify your phenotype from the curve shape

    A rider with a steep left side and rapid drop-off is a sprinter type. A rider with a flatter curve that holds well beyond 20 minutes is a diesel. Most amateur riders fall somewhere in between. Knowing your phenotype helps you choose events that suit your profile and prioritise training that addresses your specific limiters.

  3. Target training at your weakest durations

    If your 3-5 minute power dips below the modelled curve, add VO2max intervals (3-5 minute efforts at 106-120% FTP). If your 30-60 minute power is the weakness, increase threshold and sweet spot work. If the right-hand tail drops sharply, your aerobic base needs more long, steady riding. Re-check the curve after 6-8 weeks to measure the response.

    FIXIf you never do maximal 1-minute or 5-minute efforts, those sections of your curve will look artificially weak because the data is stale. Periodically test across key durations (5s, 1min, 5min, 20min) to keep the curve current.

What software shows my power duration curve?
Intervals.icu (free), TrainingPeaks, WKO5, and Golden Cheetah all generate power duration curves from your ride files. Garmin Connect and Wahoo SYSTM also display simplified versions. For the most detailed analysis, WKO5 or Intervals.icu are the strongest options.
How much data do I need for a reliable curve?
At least 6-8 weeks of varied riding that includes some hard efforts across different durations. A rider who only does Zone 2 rides will have a flat, uninformative curve beyond 20 minutes. The more varied your efforts, the more complete and accurate the curve becomes.
Does the curve change with age?
Yes. The left side (neuromuscular and anaerobic power) typically declines faster with age than the right side (aerobic endurance). Masters cyclists often see their sprint and VO2max power drop while threshold and endurance power hold relatively well with continued training. This is why many riders find they shift from criterium racing to sportives and time trials as they age.
