Most riders under-drink. They carry one bottle of water on a three-hour ride and wonder why they feel awful in the last hour. The maths is simple: you lose 500-1,000ml of fluid per hour through sweat, more in heat. If you are only replacing 250ml per hour, you accumulate a litre deficit every two hours. That deficit costs watts, concentration, and recovery time.
For anything over 90 minutes, put electrolytes in at least one of your bottles. Sodium is the big one — it drives fluid absorption and prevents the diluted-blood-volume problem that comes from drinking plain water for hours. You do not need expensive products; an electrolyte tablet dissolved in a bidon does the job.

Sweat sodium concentration varies widely between individuals — from 200mg to over 1,500mg per litre of sweat. Athletes with high sweat sodium losses (salty sweat stains, cramping tendency) need higher sodium drinks and may require 1,000-1,500mg sodium per litre to maintain performance.

Set a drinking schedule
Every 15-20 minutes, take 3-4 large gulps from your bottle. This delivers roughly 150-200ml per interval, adding up to 500-750ml per hour. Set a repeating timer on your cycling computer if you tend to forget.
Use the two-bottle system for long rides
Carry one bottle of electrolyte/carbohydrate drink and one bottle of plain water. Alternate between them. The electrolyte bottle provides fuel and sodium; the water bottle lets you rinse your mouth or cool your head in heat.
Weigh yourself before and after a ride to calibrate
Weigh yourself before a ride (minimal clothing) and again after. Each kilogram lost represents approximately 1 litre of fluid deficit. Use this to adjust your drinking rate on future rides.
