Chain replacement is the single most cost-effective bit of maintenance you can do on a bike. A new chain costs $20-40. A new cassette costs $50-150. New chainrings cost $40-100. Run the chain until it is worn and you replace all three. Check it monthly and replace it at 0.5% and you only ever buy chains.

The tool is a chain checker — also called a chain wear indicator. It is a metal gauge that slots into the chain. If the 0.5 side drops in fully, replace the chain. If the 0.75 side drops in, you have waited too long and the cassette may already be compromised. Test: put the new chain on and ride. If it skips under load on the cassette, the cassette is done too.

In wet, dirty conditions — winter riding, gravel, rain — chain wear accelerates dramatically. You might get 1,500 km instead of 3,000. Clean and lube your chain every 200-300 km in winter, and check wear monthly. It is the cheapest performance maintenance there is.

  1. Buy a chain checker tool and check monthly

    A Park Tool CC-2 or Shimano TL-CN42 costs $10-15. Drop the 0.5% side into the chain. If it falls in fully between the rollers, the chain is due for replacement. Check after every 500 km in wet conditions.

  2. Replace the chain at 0.5% — do not wait

    Order your replacement chain before you need it so there is no delay. When the checker reads 0.5%, swap the chain that week. It is a 15-minute job with a chain breaker or quick link.

  3. Clean and lubricate every 200-400 km

    Wipe the chain with a rag, apply chain lube to each roller, and wipe off excess. In wet conditions, clean more frequently. A clean, lubricated chain wears significantly slower than a dry or gritty one.

  4. Test the new chain on your existing cassette

    After fitting a new chain, ride and shift through all gears under moderate load. If the chain skips on any sprocket, the cassette teeth are too worn and the cassette needs replacing too. Better to discover this at home than mid-ride.

How many kilometres does a bike chain last?
Typically 2,000-3,000 km for an 11 or 12-speed chain in dry conditions with regular cleaning. In wet or gritty conditions, 1,000-2,000 km. Higher-speed chains (12-speed) are thinner and wear faster than lower-speed chains.
Do expensive chains last longer?
Premium chains with hardened pins and nickel or titanium nitride coatings last 20-40% longer than basic chains. Whether the extra cost per kilometre is worthwhile depends on riding conditions — the premium is most justified in wet, dirty environments.
Should I replace the cassette every time I replace the chain?
No — if you replace the chain at 0.5% wear, the cassette should last through 2-3 chains. Only replace the cassette if a new chain skips under load.
Is wax lubricant better than wet lube for chain longevity?
Wax-based lubricants (like Squirt or Silca Hot Melt) reduce chain wear by 30-50% compared with wet lubricants because they do not attract grit. The trade-off is more frequent re-application and more effort to apply.
Can I use a ruler instead of a chain checker?
Yes. Align the zero mark with a pin centre and measure 12 full links (12 inches on a new chain). If the 12-inch mark reaches 12 and 1/16 inches, the chain is at 0.5% wear. A chain checker is faster and easier, but a ruler works.
Does single-speed chain wear differ?
Single-speed chains are wider and stronger than multi-speed chains, lasting 5,000-10,000 km. They also cost less to replace and do not affect a cassette. The same 0.5% wear principle applies but the interval is much longer.
