ANAEROBIC CAPACITY

The total amount of energy a cyclist can produce from non-oxygen-dependent metabolic pathways. Expressed as W' or FRC, measured in kilojoules.

Anaerobic capacity is the total sprint-and-above-threshold reservoir. It's distinct from anaerobic power (the peak wattage during sprints) and from VO2max (the aerobic ceiling). Cyclists with higher anaerobic capacity handle repeated hard efforts, bridges, and attacks better. Training includes 30-second maximal efforts, 1-minute all-out intervals, and short hill repeats. Anaerobic capacity peaks in the late 20s and declines gradually — one reason masters cyclists benefit from training threshold and durability instead of chasing pure anaerobic work.
