VO2MAX

The highest rate at which the body can take in, transport and use oxygen during an incremental test. It is usually expressed relative to body mass in mL/kg/min or as an absolute rate in L/min.

Laboratory respiratory-gas analysis measures VO2max directly; watches and field tests estimate it. VO2max is an important contributor to endurance performance, but threshold, cycling efficiency, anaerobic contribution and durability also matter. It can respond to several training approaches, and the size of the response varies between riders. No single interval protocol or intensity distribution is universally best.
