BETA-OXIDATION

Metabolic process breaking down fatty acids into acetyl-CoA for the Krebs cycle. The body's long-duration fuel pathway.

Fatty acids break into 2-carbon units in mitochondria. Slower than glycolysis but yields more total energy (9 kcal/g fat vs 4 kcal/g carb). Zone 2 training enhances beta-oxidation by increasing mitochondrial density and relevant enzymes. Fat-adapted athletes have higher rates but no performance gains above moderate intensity.
