CAPILLARY DENSITY

Number of capillaries surrounding each muscle fibre. Higher = better oxygen delivery + faster waste removal. Key zone 2 adaptation.

Endurance-trained muscle has 2-3× the capillary density of untrained. Driven primarily by long-duration aerobic training — sustained blood flow provides the shear stress for angiogenesis. High-intensity intervals don't grow new capillaries as effectively. Capillarisation is a slow adaptation — months, not weeks.
