TYPE I (SLOW-TWITCH) MUSCLE FIBRES

Fatigue-resistant fibres optimised for sustained aerobic work. High mitochondrial density, high capillary density, high fat oxidation.

The endurance engine. Cyclists typically have 60-80% type I in vastus lateralis. Fibre proportion is largely genetic but endurance training shifts type IIx toward type IIa characteristics. Zone 2 specifically develops type I capacity — building mitochondria and capillaries.
