DRAFTING (SITTING IN THE WHEEL)

Riding closely behind another cyclist to reduce energy cost by approximately 25-30%. The fundamental skill of group riding and racing.

At 40 km/h, a rider in the draft saves roughly 25-30% of the energy of the rider on the front, with the exact saving depending on gap distance, speed, and wind. This is why professional races are decided by tactics, not just fitness — the strongest rider who rides on the front all day will lose to a weaker rider who drafts until the finale. Safe drafting distance: 15-30cm in racing, 30-60cm in training. Requires trust, smooth riding, and the ability to hold a line without braking suddenly.
