  • Drafting saves you 30-40 per cent of your energy. That is not a marginal gain — it is the difference between finishing strong and crawling home. Yet most amateur riders have never been taught how to do it properly.
  • The skills here are trainable. Start with two-up rides, then small chain gangs, then bigger groups. You do not need to be fast — you need to be smooth, predictable, and willing to hold your line when someone is six inches off your back wheel.
  • Never overlap wheels. I cannot say this strongly enough. If the rider ahead moves sideways even slightly, your front wheel clips theirs and you go down with zero chance of recovery. Hold your line and hold the gap.

Drafting saves you between 27% and 40% of your energy output. Not a rough guess. Not a marketing claim from a skinsuit brand. That number comes from wind tunnel measurements and computational fluid dynamics work — Bert Blocken's research group at TU Eindhoven has been quantifying the aerodynamic interactions between cyclists for over a decade, and the data is remarkably consistent. Barry et al. confirmed similar figures in their 2015 Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics study using track cycling scenarios.

Thirty percent. That's not a marginal gain. That's the difference between finishing a 100-mile sportive with your legs intact and crawling over the line wondering why you bothered.

But sitting behind another rider is only the beginning. The real skill set — the stuff that separates a rider who survives in a group from one who drives it — is knowing how to hold a wheel safely, when and how to rotate through on the front, how to read a crosswind and slot into an echelon, and when to trust the rider ahead versus when to bail. These are the core skills of the craft, and most amateur cyclists never formally learn any of them.

The 30% Number: What Drafting Actually Saves You

Nobody tells you this, but the energy savings from drafting are not linear. They depend on three variables: following distance, speed, and the size and shape of the rider you're sitting behind.

Blocken's wind tunnel work at TU Eindhoven puts the drag reduction for a second rider at around 27% at a following distance of roughly 15cm — virtually touching wheels. At a more realistic 50cm gap, you're still saving somewhere in the region of 25-30%. Even at a full metre back, the savings sit around 20%. These numbers hold at speeds of 40-50kph, which is a typical group ride or race pace on flat roads.

What changes the picture significantly is group size. The third and fourth riders in a paceline save even more than the second — because the turbulent wake zone expands as more riders contribute to the slipstream. Blocken's CFD simulations showed that riders in the middle of a large group can save upwards of 40% compared to riding solo. The rider on the front, obviously, saves nothing. That's why rotation exists.

Here is where it gets really interesting: the rider on the front doesn't just save zero — they actually work harder than they would alone at the same speed. The pressure differential created by riders behind slightly increases the front rider's drag. It's a small effect (2-5%), but it's measurable. The front position is measurably more expensive than riding solo.

The practical application is simple. If you're riding solo at 30kph and producing 200 watts, you could produce 140 watts and maintain the same speed sitting in a group. Or you could produce 200 watts and ride at 34-35kph. That is an enormous difference over the course of a 100km sportive or a three-hour club run. Understanding your power-to-speed relationship makes this tangible — you can see exactly how many watts drafting saves at your riding speed.

Wheel-Following Fundamentals

Distance and Why It Matters

The first skill is learning to hold a consistent gap behind the rider ahead. For experienced riders in a group they trust, that gap is typically 30-50cm. For newer riders, start at a full bike length and close the gap gradually over weeks and months.

The physics are simple: closer means more draft. But closer also means less reaction time. At 40kph you're covering 11 metres per second. At a following distance of 30cm, you have roughly 0.03 seconds before your front wheel touches their rear wheel if they brake suddenly. Nobody reacts that fast. What saves you is not reaction time — it's anticipation. You're not reacting to what the rider ahead does. You're reading what they're about to do.

Reading the Rider Ahead

This is the skill that takes years to refine and nobody really teaches explicitly. You're watching three things simultaneously:

Their pedal cadence. If their cadence drops, they're about to slow down. If it picks up, they're about to accelerate. Changes in cadence give you a one-to-two-second preview of speed changes before you feel them in the gap.

Their upper body. A rider who is sitting up, reaching for their bottle, or shifting their weight is about to change speed or direction. Hands moving to the drops often signals an effort is coming. Hands on the tops usually means the pace is about to ease.

The road ahead of them. Don't stare at their rear wheel. Look through them at the road 50-100 metres up. If there's a pothole, a junction, a hill cresting — you'll see it at the same time they do. If you're only watching their wheel, you're always reacting one step behind.

The best wheel-followers in a professional peloton look eerily calm. They don't yo-yo, don't grab brakes, don't surge. That's because they're processing information from the rider ahead, the road, and the group around them simultaneously. It's a learnable skill, not a talent.

The Overlap Rule

What nobody mentions to newer riders until it's almost too late: never overlap your front wheel with the rear wheel of the rider ahead. Not a centimetre. Not when you're feeling comfortable. Not when the pace is easy.

If your front wheel is alongside their rear wheel and they move sideways — even five centimetres — your front wheel gets clipped and you go down. You cannot recover from a front wheel touch. The wheel turns sideways, your momentum carries you forward, and you're on the tarmac before your brain registers what happened. It's probably the most common cause of crashes in group rides, and it's completely preventable.

Stay directly behind. Or directly alongside. Never in the zone between those two positions.

Through-and-Off: How the Rotation Works

Through-and-off is the engine room of efficient group riding. A well-executed rotation lets a group of eight riders maintain a speed that no individual rider could sustain alone for more than a few minutes. It works because nobody stays on the front long enough to accumulate real fatigue.

The Mechanics

Picture two parallel lines of riders, side by side. The advancing line (typically on the right in the UK, on the left in countries that drive on the right) moves slightly faster — half a kph to one kph quicker. The recovering line drifts slightly slower.

When you reach the front of the advancing line, you ease across to the recovering line and let your speed drop slightly. You drift backwards relative to the advancing line, recovering as you go. When you reach the back of the recovering line, you accelerate slightly to join the bottom of the advancing line. The rotation is continuous. It never stops.

Each rider spends 15-30 seconds on the exposed front. That's it. Then you're sheltered again, recovering for 60-90 seconds or more (depending on group size) before your next turn.

The Speed Difference Between Lines

What most people get wrong is the speed difference between the two lines. It should be tiny. Half a kph. Maybe one kph at most. If the advancing line is doing 38kph and the recovering line is doing 37kph, the rotation is smooth and sustainable. If the advancing line is at 40kph and the recovering line drops to 35kph, you get gaps opening up, surges at the back, and the whole thing falls apart.

The advancing line is not attacking. The recovering line is not soft-pedalling. Both lines are riding within one or two kph of the group's target speed. The slight difference is what drives the rotation — it's a conveyor belt, not a series of attacks and recoveries.

Common Mistakes

Pulling too long on the front. The hero pull — staying on the front for a minute or two to show how strong you are — destroys a through-and-off. It creates a gap behind you that the next rider has to close, which burns them, which means they pull shorter, which means the rider after them has to close an even bigger gap. Short turns. 15-30 seconds. No longer.

Surging when you join the advancing line. When you join the bottom of the advancing line at the back, you need to match its speed precisely. Not sprint to catch on. Not drift across at recovering-line speed. Watch the rider beside you in the advancing line and match their wheel. This is the transition point where most rotations get messy.

Leaving a gap when the rider ahead pulls off. When the rider at the front of the advancing line pulls across to the recovering line, you need to move smoothly into the space they've left. Not surge into it. Not wait two seconds and then close the gap. Slide into it at the same speed. Think of it as filling a space, not chasing a wheel.

Not communicating when you're cooked. If you're struggling, skip a turn. Move to the advancing line but immediately pull across to the recovering line without going to the front. No shame in it. What damages the group is pretending you're fine, getting to the front, and then blowing up and disrupting the entire rotation.

The Pull-Off

When you reach the front of the advancing line, look across to check the recovering line, then ease across in front of the rider at the top of the recovering line. Soft-pedal for a second to let your speed drop to match the recovering line's pace. Do not brake. Do not stop pedalling. Just ease off the power slightly and let the speed differential do the work.

Which side you pull off to depends on the wind direction. Pull off into the wind so the recovering line sits in the shelter. If there's no wind, convention typically has the advancing line on the right (UK) or the left (mainland Europe), but what matters is that everyone does the same thing.

Echelons: What a Crosswind Does to a Group

Echelons are where group riding gets properly tactical, and where most amateur riders get caught out without understanding why.

In still air or a headwind, the draft zone sits directly behind the rider ahead. Simple. But the moment the wind has a crosswind component, the draft zone shifts. If the wind comes from the right, the sheltered zone moves to the left of the rider ahead. The stronger the crosswind, the further the draft zone shifts.

Blocken's CFD work quantifies this precisely. At a 30-degree crosswind angle, the optimal position shifts roughly 30-40cm to the lee side of the rider ahead. At 45 degrees, the optimal position is almost directly beside them on the sheltered side. At 90 degrees — a pure crosswind — the only shelter is directly beside the rider, not behind them at all.

How an Echelon Forms

In a group riding into a crosswind, riders naturally stagger to stay in the shifted draft zone. If the wind is from the right, each rider positions themselves slightly to the left and behind the rider ahead. The result is a diagonal line stretching from the front right to the back left of the group.

The problem: roads have a fixed width. An echelon can only fit a limited number of riders across the road before someone runs out of tarmac. In a professional peloton, that might be six or seven riders. Everyone else has to form a second echelon behind the first — and the second echelon gets significantly less shelter than the first.

This is exactly why crosswind stages in grand tours cause splits. The strongest teams put their leaders in the first echelon and drive the pace. Riders who miss the first echelon end up fighting for scraps of shelter in the gutter, burning matches to stay in contact. It's one of the most brutal tactical situations in road racing.

Echelon Skills for Amateur Riders

You don't need to be racing in a professional peloton for echelon skills to matter. Any group ride in an exposed area — coastal roads, fenlands, open farmland — will put you in crosswind situations. Knowing where to position yourself is the difference between cruising in the shelter and grinding along in the gutter wondering why you're dying when nobody else seems to be struggling.

Read the wind. Look at flags, trees, long grass, the surface of puddles. Feel it on your face and arms. Where is it coming from, and what angle is it hitting the road? That tells you which side the shelter falls on.

Position yourself on the lee side. If the wind is from the right, ride slightly to the left and behind the rider ahead. If it's from the left, ride slightly right. The stronger the crosswind, the more you shift sideways rather than sitting directly behind.

Don't get stuck in the gutter. If you can feel the wind hitting you full force from one side and you're on the edge of the road with no room to move further across, you've missed the echelon. The only options are to fight your way forward into the echelon or accept that you're going to be working much harder than the riders who are in it.

In a rotating echelon, the through-and-off changes. Instead of pulling off left or right, you pull off into the wind — always into the wind — and the recovering line sits on the sheltered side. The rotation is diagonal, not parallel to the road. This is advanced group riding, and it takes a group that has practised together to execute well.

Double Paceline vs Single Paceline

Single Paceline

A single paceline is the simplest group formation. One line of riders, each sitting behind the one ahead. The rider on the front does a turn, then pulls off to one side and drifts back to join the end of the line.

When to use it:

  • On narrow roads where riding two abreast isn't practical or safe
  • In heavy traffic
  • When the crosswind makes a single-file formation the most efficient option (wind from the side you'd ride two-up on)
  • On climbs where the speed drops below 25kph and aerodynamic benefit is minimal

The downside: only one rider is sheltering you at a time, and the draft benefit is less than in a wider formation. The single rider ahead is a narrow wind block.

Double Paceline

A double paceline has riders two abreast, with both riders on the front doing the work simultaneously. When it's time to rotate, the pair on the front peels off — one to each side or both to the same side, depending on the group's convention.

When to use it:

  • On wider roads with little traffic
  • In calm conditions or a headwind (no crosswind)
  • When the group wants maximum efficiency and sociability
  • During steady-state riding where the pace is consistent

The advantage: two riders wide presents a much bigger wind block to the group behind. Riders in the third and fourth row of a double paceline save more energy than riders in the equivalent position of a single paceline. The formation is also more social — you can talk to the person beside you.

Continuous Through-and-Off

Through-and-off, described above, is the continuous version of the double paceline. The rotation never stops. It's the most efficient formation for a group that wants to maintain a high, steady pace, and it's the default formation in most chain gangs and competitive group rides.

The key difference from a basic double paceline: in through-and-off, you're always moving. There's no moment where you're sitting stationary in the line waiting for a turn. You're either advancing (in the faster line) or recovering (in the slower line), and the transition between them is constant.

Communication: Signals, Calls, and Reading the Group

Technical skill without communication is like having a fast engine with no steering wheel. A group that communicates well rides faster, safer, and more enjoyably than a group of individually stronger riders who don't talk.

Hand Signals

The standard hand signals are universal across most cycling cultures, though there are regional variations:

  • Point down at the road — obstacle below (pothole, drain, glass). Point to the side the hazard is on. Pass this signal through the group — every rider who sees it should repeat it for the riders behind.
  • Hand behind back, waving — moving out to avoid a parked car, pedestrian, or obstruction. Wave in the direction the group needs to move.
  • Hand raised — slowing down or stopping. The earlier you signal, the smoother the group stops.
  • Elbow flick — "come through." Your turn to pull through to the front. Used in paceline rotation.
  • Patting the air downward — slow down. The pace is too high, or there's a hazard ahead that requires the group to ease up.

Verbal Calls

Hand signals have a fundamental limitation: the rider behind you might be looking at your rear wheel, not your hands. Verbal calls fill that gap.

Standard calls:

  • "Hole left" / "Hole right" — obstacle, with direction
  • "Car back" — vehicle approaching from behind
  • "Car up" — vehicle coming towards the group
  • "Slowing" — rider or group reducing speed
  • "Stopping" — full stop coming
  • "Clear" or "all clear" — safe to proceed at a junction (but everyone should still check for themselves)
  • "On your right/left" — passing another rider or being passed
  • "Single out" — move from double to single file, usually because the road is narrowing or there's traffic

Call early and call clearly. Mumbling "hole" as you pass over it is useless. The call needs to reach the rider two or three positions behind you with enough time for them to react.

Reading Body Language

The calls and signals are the formal communication layer. Underneath that sits body language — the informal layer that experienced riders read automatically.

A rider who starts rocking their shoulders is struggling. Their turns on the front are about to get shorter, or they're about to sit up. A rider who suddenly sits bolt upright has seen something concerning ahead. A rider who shifts from the hoods to the drops is about to increase their effort.

Watch the group as a whole, not just the rider directly ahead. If three riders near the front are shuffling positions, something is happening — a turn, a hill, a change of pace. If the group starts to compress (riders getting closer together), the pace is about to ease. If gaps are opening, someone is pushing and the group is stretching.

These are the cues that experienced riders process without conscious thought. They're why a seasoned club rider can sit comfortably in a group of twenty while a stronger but less experienced rider is burning matches trying to hold position. The experienced rider sees what's coming. The newer rider only reacts to what's already happened.

When NOT to Follow a Wheel

Everything above assumes a functioning group with competent riders. But let me be really clear about this: there are situations where following a wheel closely is the wrong call, and the smart decision is to back off or leave the group entirely.

Riders You Don't Trust

If the rider ahead is swerving, braking unpredictably, overlapping wheels with the rider ahead of them, or riding with their head down — back off. Give yourself two bike lengths. No amount of aerodynamic benefit is worth the risk of crashing because the person ahead can't hold a line.

This isn't about being rude. It's about risk management. You can politely sit further back. You don't owe anyone 30cm of following distance. Wet Roads

In the rain, increase your following distance significantly. Braking distances roughly double on wet roads. Road paint and metal surfaces (drain covers, manhole covers, rail crossings) become properly treacherous. Spray from the rider ahead reduces your visibility to almost nothing if you're sitting close.

On a wet group ride, a bike length of gap is the minimum. The drafting benefit is reduced anyway because you're typically riding slower, and the risk of a crash increases substantially.

Descents

Fast descents change the calculation entirely. At 60-70kph, reaction times are compressed and the consequences of a mistake are far more severe. Many experienced riders open up their following distance on descents, especially technical ones with corners.

The aerodynamic benefit at descent speeds is actually higher in percentage terms — but the absolute speed means braking distances are enormous, and the energy cost of pedalling at those speeds is low anyway (gravity is doing the work). The risk-reward balance tips firmly toward caution.

Unknown Groups

First time riding with a new group? Sit near the back and watch. Learn how they ride before you commit to sitting close in the bunch. Every group has its own culture, its own pace patterns, its own communication style. Take 20 minutes to learn the rhythm before you slot into the rotation.

If the group seems chaotic, disorganised, or aggressive — and plenty are — there's no shame in dropping off the back and riding your own pace. Not every group ride is worth the risk. Your pacing strategy for the day might be better served riding solo than sitting in a sketchy bunch.

Practising These Skills: A Progressive Approach

Group riding skills are not theoretical. You can't learn them from an article — including this one. But you can understand the framework and then go practise deliberately. The good news: these skills develop faster than fitness, and you can go and start working on them this week.

Week 1-2: Two-Up Rides

Find one riding partner you trust. Ride side by side on quiet roads. Practise holding a line, riding level with each other, and matching pace. Swap position — ride behind them at a comfortable distance and practise reading their body language. Have them point out hazards and practise passing the signal back (even though there's nobody behind you — build the habit).

This is where you calibrate your gap. Start at a full bike length behind. Over several rides, gradually close it to half a bike length. Notice what it feels like. Notice how much more shelter you get as you move closer.

Week 3-4: Basic Paceline

With two or three riders, practise single-file paceline rotation. Rider on the front does 30 seconds, pulls off to the left, drifts to the back, and rejoins the line. Smooth, consistent speed throughout. Nobody surges. Nobody slows down when they pull off.

The key to practise: the transition. Pulling off smoothly without disrupting the rider behind you. Joining the back of the line without surging. These are the two moments where paceline riding goes wrong for most people.

Week 5-6: Through-and-Off

With four to six riders, practise through-and-off on a quiet road with no junctions. Two lines, advancing and recovering, with a tiny speed difference between them. Keep the turns short — 15-20 seconds on the front. Focus on smooth transitions: pulling across from the advancing line to the recovering line, and accelerating to join the advancing line at the back.

It will be messy at first. That's fine. The coordination develops surprisingly quickly once everyone understands the pattern. Three or four sessions and it starts to click.

Week 7-8: Larger Groups and Crosswinds

Join a local chain gang or structured group ride. Apply everything you've practised in a larger group. Sit near the back for the first few rides and watch the rotation. When you're comfortable, slot in and contribute.

For echelon practice, pick a windy day and ride with two or three others on an exposed road. Feel where the shelter is. Experiment with your position relative to the rider ahead. Notice how the draft zone shifts as the wind angle changes. This experiential learning is something no article or video can replicate — you need to feel it in your body, the moment the wind drops off and the effort suddenly eases.

Ongoing: Ride With Stronger Riders

The fastest way to develop group riding skills is to ride with people who are better at them than you. The etiquette, the smoothness, the communication — it's absorbed through proximity. Join the local club run. Ride the chain gang. Accept that you'll be near the back initially. Watch the experienced riders and copy what they do.

Riders who came up through club cycling in the UK or Ireland tend to have these skills baked in from years of chain gangs, reliability trials, and club runs. Riders who came to cycling through solo training — which is most of us, honestly — have to learn them deliberately. Neither path is better or worse, but the skills are non-negotiable if you want to ride safely in a group.

Why It Matters Beyond Energy Savings

The 30% energy saving is the headline number, and it's real. You can check exactly how that translates to watts saved at your speed using the power-speed calculator. But the deeper reason these skills matter is social. Cycling is a group activity for most of us most of the time. The club run, the sportive, the chain gang, the charity ride — these are group experiences. And how you ride in a group determines whether you're invited back.

A smooth, communicative rider who sits in the pack and takes short, regular turns on the front is worth their weight in gold to any group. A strong rider who surges, half-wheels, doesn't communicate hazards, and disrupts the rotation is a liability regardless of their FTP.

Alex Dowsett, who spent years in the professional peloton including holding the hour record, made a point when he was on the podcast that stuck with me. The best domestiques — the riders who control the pace for their team — aren't necessarily the strongest riders in the group. They're the smoothest. They ride in a way that makes everyone around them calmer and more efficient. That is a skill, not a power output.

These are the skills of the craft. Le metier, as the French call it. The knowledge that separates someone who rides a bike from someone who is a cyclist. The numbers show that drafting saves you 30% of your energy. What the numbers don't capture is that learning these skills makes group riding one of the most satisfying things you can do on two wheels. There's nothing in sport quite like a group of twenty riders rotating smoothly through a crosswind, nobody saying a word, everybody knowing exactly where to be.
