GLYCOLYSIS

Anaerobic breakdown of glucose into pyruvate and ATP. Fast but inefficient (2 ATP per glucose). Dominant during sprints and above-threshold efforts.

When intensity exceeds oxidative capacity, glycolysis ramps up, producing pyruvate converted to lactate. The hydrogen ion byproduct drives the 'burn' and eventual failure. Glycolytic rate relates to VLaMax. Endurance cyclists benefit from moderate glycolytic rate.
