HANDLEBAR WIDTH

Outside-to-outside measurement of drop handlebars. Traditionally matched to shoulder width, but narrower bars (38-40cm) are increasingly popular for aerodynamic benefit.

Traditional: match to shoulder acromion width. Modern trend: go 2-4cm narrower for reduced frontal area — most World Tour riders use 38-40cm. Narrower bars reduce CdA by 3-5% but may compromise stability in sprints. Riders with shoulder/neck issues often benefit from slightly wider bars.
