STEM LENGTH

Length of the stem connecting steerer tube to handlebars. Affects reach, handling, and weight distribution. Typical road: 80-130mm.

Primary variable for fine-tuning reach after frame selection. Longer = more reach, slower steering. Shorter = less reach, quicker steering. 10mm change is noticeable. If ideal stem is under 70mm or over 130mm, the frame is likely wrong size. Stem angle also affects stack — 6° vs -17° changes effective stack by 20-30mm.
