LACTATE SHUTTLE

The process by which lactate from fast-twitch fibres is transported to and consumed as fuel by slow-twitch fibres, the heart, and the brain.

Lactate is a fuel, not a waste product. The heart runs preferentially on lactate during exercise. Training the shuttle (threshold intervals, over-unders) improves the body's ability to produce, transport, and consume lactate simultaneously. Better shuttle = higher sustainable power.
