SODIUM LOADING (PRE-HYDRATION)

Consuming extra sodium (1,500-3,000mg) with fluid before a long event to expand plasma volume and delay dehydration.

Sodium loading expands blood plasma volume by 200-400ml. Protocol: 1,500-3,000mg sodium in 500-750ml fluid, consumed 90-120 minutes before start. Most effective for events over 3 hours in heat above 25°C. Heavy sweaters benefit most. Not a substitute for in-ride electrolytes.
