Roadman, this is a historic podcast. We are at the beginning of a very, very, very special journey. The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness, and our longevity? That is the question and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Welch and welcome to the Roadman Podcast. Roadman, it's story time on the roadman podcast. This is a roadman podcast with a difference. All will be revealed inside this very short bite size episode of the roadman podcast. This one is going to take around about five minutes, maybe a little more. Here it goes, story time. A lot of you know my backstory. I went through undergrads, graduated out the first time in school. I was really getting into cycling but like many students I had not a belated cash, not a bean in my pockets. Every single penny I had, you know, the typical student cliche is every penny I had was spent drinking. Realistically it wasn't. Every single penny I had was spent on race entry and I was dealing everything I caught in the library checking out as many cycling books as I caught, you know, living in North Dublin. Not a lot of high quality cycling, publications in the public library. But I've done my very best. And what I started doing was me and a group of friends, we started figuring this out. All skill, trial and error stuff. I mean, like to the point that at one stage we went through a phase where we weren't eating or drinking on the bike in training. Like, let's now, first of all, this is. We didn't eat or drink on the bike in training because we taught when we ate and drank in the weekends in races that would supercharge us, not to be the case, do not try that one. So I tried the trial and error for a while and that worked limited amount. I'd pick up a little nugget, maybe every six months that it'd implement that. And then I met a friend, the turning point. He was riding world tour at the time and he said to me, look, what are you doing? He actually broke his heart laughing, exactly what you want to hear, isn't it, when I was telling him what I was doing. And he said, look, there's a framework, there's a system. It's step by step. You need to do a little bit of this, a little bit of that, a little bit less of that. And he said, boom, boom, boom. Like following a recipe. You know, if you're baking a cake, you know exactly how much of each thing you put in. He said, it's the exact same thing for accomplishing your cycling goals. And that was the time my eyes were opened. Wide, wide open at that stage. I thought, oh my God, I've been wasting my time and I'm looking around club spins. I'm looking at riders on the road and everyone else is wasting their time. I'm like, why don't people notice? So that was the inception Genesis moment A1 coach and A1 coach and you know the stuff he taught me forcefully it worked great for me and I couldn't believe other people didn't know this system but then I set up A1 and it worked great for the clients and you know A1 went great and now I'm surrounded by this amazing group of coaches and I get to chat with these coaches all the time and we're scheming, hairball, schemes and we're going well what do you think of that latest story what do you think of this and it's not that I'm you know I have this figured out I am you We're on this exact same journey together.
We're on this path together. But maybe I'm a couple of chapters ahead of you listening. And I can short circuit the, you know, the trolley the narrow process that I went through for you. If anyone, I'm a massive movie fan. I'm always plague and my girlfriend Sarah to go to the cinema. And movie I particularly love. It's Tom Hanksley and Arthur DeCaprio on what catch me if you can. And the FBI at the end, the debrief, they're sent to Leonardo DiCaprio, he was a con man, if you haven't seen it, go and check it out. They're sent to Leonardo DiCaprio. Okay, we can understand a lot of the schemes you pulled, you know, credit card fraud, check fraud. But how did you get away with lecturing in a university for a few semesters? And he said it was easy, I just had a couple of chapters ahead of the class. So that's what I feel like I can be for you guys, I can be a couple of chapters ahead. I'm in this amazing collective of coaches. We're not gurus, we don't have all the answers, but we're banging around a lot of ideas. We're reading the latest sports science, we're chatting on the podcast, all the cool world horror writers figuring out what's going on, and I'm mumbling all that, and I'm mashing it up together, and I'm commenting some pretty cool conclusions, and I want to share them with you. And that is why this podcast is an important watershed moment. I've decided to bring the podcast every weekday to you. So the new format I'm gonna go with is Wednesday I'm gonna keep it as our typical podcast format. It's gonna be the long form, it's gonna be the interview style or a deep dive into a topic. I've been bringing it to you for the last couple of months. It's proven very very popular. I'm loving chatting to the guys but every other weekday so I'm on the Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, I'm gonna bring you, I'm calling them roadman, bite-sized podcasts for the moment. It's a a work in there, maybe I'll come up with something else. They're going to be five to ten minutes actionable things that you can take and you can go, whoa, I got this one tip from Anthony today. Now I can go and implement this one thing. Rather than me giving you 500 things and then you go, oh my god, I'm so overwhelmed. I don't know where to start. Who's ever gone to a conference or a personal improvement type workshop and you're taking notes, notes, notes, and then at the end of the weekend, you've got 20, 30 pages full of notes and you're like, like, oh my God, it's so overwhelming. Where do I start? I don't want that to be your podcast experience with me. I'm gonna give you daily actionable stuff you can go out and implement. And I really had the watershed moment around this with the podcast I done a couple of weeks ago. It was called the Golden Circle. If you haven't listened to it, yeah, yeah. If you haven't listened, go back, go back. What have you been doing with yourself? It was gold, it was fire. I was spitting into the microphone. Go back and listen to the Golden Circle podcast. And this is the idea of the tree circles. A lot of people know what they're doing. We're riding our bike. A lot of people know how they're doing it. Like, yeah, I'm following this with training plan. The why, that's what separates the really great performers. And that's what separates you in having longevity in the sport from someone else.
