You can spend thousands on the perfect indoor cycling setup and still avoid using it. I've seen it, and I have done it myself.
That's the starting point for this episode. Before you buy anything for the winter, ask whether it will make you more likely to get on the bike and more likely to finish the session. If it won't, it's not an upgrade. It's a purchase.
What makes an indoor space work
The episode goes through the things that decide whether an indoor setup earns its keep: the trainer, the fan, the screen, where it all sits in the room, and the small bits of friction that nobody mentions. The rankings come out differently from what the shops would like.
Cooling comes first. Indoors, the same power feels harder when the air isn't moving, and a session you can't finish does nothing for you. If you've got one pound to spend, spend it on airflow. The detail is in the pain cave setup guide.
Where spending more helps, and where it doesn't
A stable trainer, a screen at a height you can read, and a bike position you can hold for an hour all change the session. A pile of extra gadgets usually doesn't. I'd hold off on anything that adds complexity in the first weeks of winter, when the habit is still fragile.
The cheapest upgrade
Leave the bike on the trainer. Leave the kit out. Have the session loaded before you walk into the room. Every step between "I'll ride" and pedalling is a chance to talk yourself out of it, and removing those steps costs nothing.
I wrote a companion piece to go with this episode: indoor cycling upgrades worth buying, and the friction that stops you riding. If you want the wider setup, the indoor training setup that actually works covers it.
