LIMITATIONS

The 88-94% band is a coaching convention, not a measured physiological threshold. FTP methods can disagree at individual level, and percentage alone does not capture duration, fatigue or internal response. Session templates are examples; do not infer a personal recovery time or weekly dose from the calculator.

When to see a coach

Use a coach when the calculated target repeatedly fails to match perceived effort or repeatable performance, when the complete weekly load is difficult to interpret, or when event demands require a personalised progression. Stop and seek medical assessment for concerning exercise symptoms.

What is sweet spot training in cycling?+

How long should a sweet spot interval be?+

There is no universal length. Choose intervals that allow the final repetition to resemble the first, then extend controlled time before raising power. A rider new to structure may need shorter work than the templates, while experienced riders may use longer blocks for a specific event demand.

Is sweet spot better than threshold training?+

Neither is universally better. Sweet spot is commonly used for controlled sub-threshold work, while threshold training targets sustained work nearer FTP. Choose from the event, training phase, available time, FTP method and the rider's previous response.

How many sweet spot sessions per week?+

No evidence-backed number fits everyone. Count races, hard group rides, other interval work, strength training and life stress before setting frequency. One controlled session can be a conservative starting point; add work only when the complete set and normal training remain stable.

What does sweet spot feel like?+

Controlled effort. You can hold a short conversation but would rather not. Breathing is elevated but rhythmic. Legs feel loaded but not burning. On a 1-10 RPE scale, it sits at 7-8. If it feels easy, you are in tempo. If you are counting down the seconds, you have drifted into threshold.

Does sweet spot training work for older cyclists?+

It can, but age alone does not prescribe the dose or recovery gap. Masters-recovery evidence is limited and mixed. Use recent comparable sessions, sleep, soreness, motivation and normal power trends rather than a fixed 48-hour rule.
