The cycling internet glorifies a slammed stem — bars as low as they go, spacers removed, looking like a WorldTour time trialist. Anthony has spoken with Phil Burt about this, and the reality for most amateurs is that a slammed position costs more than it gains. If you cannot hold a low position without your back rounding, your neck cramping, or your power dropping after 90 minutes, the bars are too low.

The adjustment itself is simple. Spacers sit below the stem on the steerer tube. Adding a 10 mm spacer raises the bars by 10 mm. Removing one lowers them. The stem itself usually has an angle — flipping it from above the steerer to below it drops the bars by 1-2 cm, and vice versa. These two changes cover a range of about 3-5 cm, which is enough for most riders.

The position to aim for is one you can hold comfortably for the duration of your longest rides. For most amateurs that means bars 2-6 cm below the saddle. If you want to go lower, build the flexibility first — core strength and hamstring mobility are what let you hold a lower position, not just cutting spacers.

    Bar height should be set by the rider's flexibility, not their ambition. A position the rider cannot sustain is slower than a higher one they can hold comfortably, because power degrades when the body fights the position.

  1. Check your current drop

    Measure from the top of your saddle to the top of your bars. 2-6 cm of drop is the comfortable range for most amateurs. More than 8 cm is aggressive and requires good flexibility.

  2. Adjust with spacers first

    Add or remove 5-10 mm spacers below the stem. Loosen the top cap bolt, loosen the stem bolts, slide the stem up or down on the steerer, rearrange spacers, retighten in the correct order (top cap first to set preload, then stem bolts).

  3. Flip the stem if more change is needed

    A 6-degree stem flipped from positive to negative drops the bars about 1-2 cm. A 17-degree stem changes height by about 3 cm. This is a bigger change — try it on the turbo first.

  4. Ride for two weeks before deciding

    A new bar height feels wrong for the first few rides. Give it two weeks of riding before deciding whether to adjust again. If discomfort persists after that, it needs further change or a professional fit.

How low should handlebars be on a road bike?
For most amateurs, 2-6 cm below the saddle is the productive range. Competitive riders may go to 6-10 cm. Lower than that requires significant flexibility and core strength to sustain without losing power.
Can I raise handlebars without buying new parts?
Usually yes — rearranging existing spacers or flipping the stem covers a range of 3-5 cm. If you need more height than that, a stem with a positive rise angle is the next step.
Will lowering my bars make me faster?
Only if you can hold the position. Aero gains from a lower front end are real, but they disappear if your back rounds, your breathing is restricted, or you sit up after 60 minutes. Lower is only faster if it is sustainable.
How do I know if my handlebars are too low?
Neck pain, shoulder tension, numbness in the hands, lower back discomfort, or needing to sit up frequently on rides are all signs your bars are too low for your current flexibility.
Does handlebar height affect climbing?
Slightly. Higher bars make it easier to breathe and shift weight back on steep climbs. Very low bars can restrict breathing when climbing hard, though on moderate gradients the difference is small.
Should I adjust bar height seasonally?
Some riders raise bars slightly in winter when they ride in bulkier clothing and flexibility is reduced, then lower them as spring fitness and flexibility return. It is not essential but it is a sensible approach.
