CLEAT POSITION

The fore-aft, lateral, and rotational placement of the cleat on the cycling shoe. Determines foot-pedal interface and knee tracking.

Millimetre changes affect knee tracking across thousands of pedal revolutions per ride. Fore-aft: ball of foot over spindle is traditional; many fitters now move cleats 5-10mm toward heel for reduced calf fatigue. Rotation: sets natural foot angle — forced rotation causes knee pain. Check cleats every 3-6 months — they wear and shift.
