STROKE VOLUME

Volume of blood pumped by the left ventricle per heartbeat. Higher = more oxygen per beat = lower HR at a given power.

Primary cardiac adaptation to endurance training. Trained: 100-130ml/beat. Elite: 150-200ml. Explains why fit athletes have lower resting HR. Increases through chamber enlargement driven by years of aerobic training. Zone 2 provides the haemodynamic stimulus.
