TEMPO TRAINING

Sustained riding at 76-90% of FTP (Zone 3). Harder than endurance, easier than threshold. Builds muscular endurance but sits in the polarised 'grey zone'.

Zone 3 feels 'comfortably hard' and is where most amateurs default without structure. Tempo has its place: race-specific sportive preparation and time-crunched riders. The polarised critique: tempo accumulates fatigue without specific zone 2 or zone 4+ adaptations. Most coaches use tempo sparingly and deliberately.
