You have the fitness. Your FTP is where it needs to be. You do the intervals, the long rides, the structured weeks. And yet every race finishes the same way — somewhere in the middle of the bunch, legs blown, watching riders you know you are stronger than roll across the line ahead of you.
Here's the thing nobody tells you about Cat 4 racing: the fittest rider almost never wins. The smartest one does.
Race craft is a skill, and it is a skill that nobody teaches you in training. You cannot learn it on Zwift. You cannot learn it from intervals. You learn it by racing, by getting it wrong, by sitting in the wrong place at the wrong time and wondering what happened. But you can accelerate that process enormously by understanding the principles before you pin on a number.
This is the guide I wish someone had handed me before my first 20 races. Not fitness advice. Not training plans. The tactical framework that turns a fit rider into a competitive one.
What Cat 4 Racing Actually Looks Like
Let me be really clear about this: Cat 4 racing is not a slower version of professional racing. It is a fundamentally different kind of event. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you start finishing where your fitness says you should.
Here is what you expect before your first few races: a controlled bunch, a steady pace, a gradual build towards a sprint finish, attacks that look like the ones you see on television. Organised. Legible. Something you can read and respond to.
Here is what you actually get: a nervous bunch of 40 to 60 riders who are all slightly afraid of each other, surging unpredictably, braking when they should not be braking, accelerating when nobody needs to accelerate, and making decisions based on adrenaline rather than tactics. The pace is not steady. It oscillates wildly — 38kph for two minutes, then 45kph for 30 seconds, then 35kph for a minute while everyone recovers. Then someone panics and drives the pace again for no tactical reason whatsoever.
The surging is the defining characteristic of Cat 4 racing. In a pro peloton, the pace is high but consistent. In Cat 4, the average speed might be moderate but the variability is extreme. The power file from a Cat 4 race looks like a heart-rate monitor during a horror film — constant spikes, constant recovery, no rhythm. This is why riders with big FTPs finish mid-pack. The race is not testing your threshold. It is testing your ability to manage repeated surges without emptying the tank.
The other thing that makes Cat 4 different is unpredictability. The riders around you are learning, just like you. They swerve. They overlap wheels. They brake suddenly on corners. They leave gaps, then close them aggressively. None of this is malicious — they simply have not developed the reflexes and spatial awareness that come with hundreds of hours of bunch racing. You need to account for this. Ride with wider margins than you think you need. Expect the unexpected. The gap that looks stable will close without warning.
Position Is Everything
If you take one thing from this entire article, make it this: where you sit in the bunch determines how hard you race more than any other single variable.
The physics are straightforward. At 40kph, drafting behind another rider reduces your energy expenditure by roughly 30 per cent. That is enormous. It is the difference between riding at threshold and riding at tempo. The rider on the front is doing significantly more work than the rider sitting third wheel, and the rider sitting third wheel is racing the same race.
But here is where it gets really interesting. The draft advantage is only part of the equation. Position also determines how much energy you waste on the accordion effect — and in Cat 4, that effect is what destroys riders.
The Accordion Effect
Picture a bunch of 50 riders strung out on a road. The rider at the front decelerates slightly — maybe a corner, maybe the wind shifts, maybe they just ease off. The rider behind them reacts half a second later, decelerating slightly more. The rider behind that one reacts half a second after that, decelerating even more. By the time this wave reaches the back of the bunch, riders are braking hard, sometimes almost stopping.
Then the front accelerates again. The same wave travels backwards, but now each rider has to close a gap that has opened ahead of them. The rider at the back has to accelerate the hardest, sometimes sprinting, to close a gap that did not exist for the rider at the front.
This is the accordion effect, and in Cat 4 racing it is vicious. A pace change of 2kph at the front becomes a sprint of 8-10kph at the back. Every corner amplifies it. Every surge amplifies it. Every nervous brake-tap amplifies it. The rider at position 40 in a Cat 4 bunch is doing dramatically more work than the rider at position 10, not because the race is harder for them, but because the physics of the bunch punish the rear disproportionately.
The fix is simple but requires assertiveness. Sit in the top 10 to 15. Not the front — you do not want to be pulling the bunch and doing all the work. But 5th through 15th, on the sheltered side relative to the wind. In this zone, you get the draft, you see what is happening ahead, the accordion effect is manageable, and you can respond to attacks and splits before they strand you.
Moving up from 30th to 10th in a bunch is not aggressive. It is not rude. It is survival. The riders who sit at the back because they feel it is polite to stay out of the way are the riders who get dropped when the pace goes up, because they have been doing 20 per cent more work than everyone else for the entire race.
Energy Conservation: The Art of Doing Less
The riders who consistently finish well in Cat 4 are not the strongest. They are the most economical. They do less work for the same result, and they arrive at the business end of the race with matches left to burn.
Here is what most Cat 4 riders do: they respond to everything. Someone surges — they surge. A gap opens two riders ahead — they sprint to close it. The pace drops — they go to the front because the pace "feels too slow." They are constantly active, constantly burning energy, and by the time the race matters — the last three to five kilometres — they have nothing left.
Here is what works: sit in the wheels. Follow the wheel in front of you. When the pace surges, let the rider ahead absorb it and follow their acceleration smoothly rather than over-responding. When a gap opens, close it gradually unless it is seriously threatening to split the bunch. When the pace drops, enjoy it. Your legs are recovering while the rider on the front is working.
This sounds passive. It is not. It is selective. You are choosing where to spend energy and where to save it. The difference between a rider who finishes 8th and a rider who finishes 35th is often not fitness — it is the number of unnecessary efforts the second rider made in the first half of the race.
Reading the Race
Race awareness is what separates a novice from an experienced racer, and it comes down to watching three things: who is working, who is sitting in, and what the wind is doing.
Who is working. Look at the riders who are spending time on the front. They are either strong and controlling the race, or they are nervous and burning matches. In Cat 4, it is usually the latter. The riders doing big turns on the front in the first half of a race are often the first ones to get dropped in the second half. Note who they are. Do not follow their attacks later — they will not have the legs.
Who is sitting in. The riders who sit in the top 10 but never take a pull are either lazy, experienced, or both. In Cat 4, they are usually the ones who know what they are doing. Watch them. Follow their moves. When a rider who has been sitting in all day suddenly moves to the front with five kilometres to go, something is about to happen.
Wind direction. This is the variable that most Cat 4 riders completely ignore, and it determines race tactics more than any other single factor. Before the race starts, check the wind. Ride the course if you can, or look at the map and work out which sections are headwind, tailwind, and crosswind.
Headwind sections keep the bunch together because the draft advantage is massive. Everyone shelters behind the riders in front. Crosswind sections are where races break apart, because the bunch can only shelter so many riders across the road — the rest are exposed and have to work significantly harder. Tailwind sections neutralise the draft advantage and the bunch strings out.
If the course has a crosswind section in the final quarter, that is where the race will split. Position yourself on the sheltered side of the bunch before you reach it. If you are caught on the wrong side when the echelon forms, you are fighting for position in the gutter while the front group rides away.
When to Follow and When to Attack
Here is the question every Cat 4 rider asks: when should I go? And here is the answer that nobody wants to hear: almost never in the first half.
Let me break this down. The success rate of solo attacks in Cat 4 racing is shockingly low. Rough estimates from any seasoned commissaire will tell you that 80 per cent or more of Cat 4 attacks get reeled in within two minutes. The reasons are predictable. The attacker does not have a big enough gap. The bunch is nervous and chases everything. Other riders see the attack, panic, and drag the whole field up to the break. Or the attacker simply does not have the sustained power to stay away alone against a drafting bunch.
Attacks That Fail
The solo flyer in lap two. This rider goes off the front with 80 per cent of the race remaining, rides at threshold for four minutes, looks back, sees the bunch 50 metres behind, and gets swallowed. They have burned a massive match and gained nothing. This happens in every single Cat 4 race.
The reactionary surge. Someone attacks. Another rider panics and chases. A third rider follows the chaser. None of them coordinate. None of them share the work. They dangle 30 metres off the front for 90 seconds, then the bunch absorbs them. All three have wasted energy. The smart riders in the bunch have not.
The headwind hero. An attack into a headwind is almost always doomed. The draft advantage in a headwind is so large that the bunch barely has to increase pace to close the gap. The attacker is doing 100 per cent of the work against the wind. The bunch is doing 30 per cent less than the attacker by sharing the load and sheltering. The maths is brutal and one-sided.
Attacks That Work
Two or three riders go together. A coordinated move by two or three riders who are willing to share the work has a dramatically higher success rate than a solo attack. If you see multiple riders go together, watch their body language. Are they organised? Are they taking turns? That move is dangerous. Consider bridging across if you have the legs — but only if you can contribute to the rotation, not just sit on.
Late in the race, on the right terrain. An attack on a climb or into a crosswind in the final quarter of the race, when the bunch is tired and less organised, has a genuine chance of sticking. The bunch's willingness to chase diminishes as fatigue accumulates. An attack at the 80 per cent mark that would have been caught easily at the 20 per cent mark can succeed because nobody wants to be the one who chases.
Off the front of a reduced group. If the race has already split and you are in a front group of 15 riders, the dynamics change. Fewer riders means less drafting advantage, less organised chasing, and a higher chance that your attack catches people off guard. A move from a small group is always more viable than a move from a large bunch.
The rule of thumb: if you want to attack in Cat 4, do it in the final 20 per cent of the race, on terrain that favours the break, with at least one other rider. Everything else is donating energy to the race without getting anything back.
The Last 3km: Controlled Chaos
The final three kilometres of a Cat 4 race are where everything happens and where most riders lose any chance of a result. The pace ramps up, the bunch tightens, riders start fighting for position, and the tension is palpable. If you have not raced before, it feels dangerous. It is not inherently dangerous — but it requires a specific approach.
Here is the critical principle: if you are not in the top 15 when the speed ramps up for the finale, you are not finishing in the top 15. Position yourself before you need to, not when you need to. That means moving up to the front of the bunch with five to seven kilometres to go, while the pace is still manageable and gaps still exist. Trying to move up in the last kilometre, when the bunch is flying at 48kph and every rider is shoulder to shoulder, is nearly impossible.
The Bunch Sprint as a Non-Sprinter
Most Cat 4 riders are not pure sprinters. That does not mean you cannot finish well in a bunch sprint. In Cat 4, the sprint is won more on position than on power.
Think about it mathematically. The rider in 5th place with 300 metres to go needs to overtake four riders. The rider in 25th place with 300 metres to go needs to overtake 24 riders. Even if the second rider has a higher peak power, the first rider will almost certainly finish higher because they have less ground to make up and fewer bodies to navigate around.
Your sprint preparation starts at two kilometres to go. Pick a wheel — ideally a rider who looks comfortable, is in good position, and is big enough to give you a solid draft. Follow that wheel through the final kilometre. Do not get drawn into early sprints or surges — let other riders burn their matches accelerating and decelerating. When the sprint opens up inside the final 200 metres, launch from the position you have earned.
The other non-sprinter option is to attack the last kilometre. A sustained effort from one kilometre out — not a sprint, but a hard, high-cadence time trial effort — can catch the bunch off guard if they are all watching each other and waiting for the sprint. You will not win a bunch kick from the front. But you might hold off a disorganised Cat 4 sprint if you have a gap and the bunch cannot organise a chase in time.
Moving Up Safely: Elbows, Shoulders, and Space
Bike racing is a contact sport. Not in the sense that contact is the objective, but in the sense that contact happens. Elbows touch. Shoulders brush. Handlebars get close. If you are not comfortable with this, you will struggle to move through a Cat 4 bunch.
The good news is that moving up safely is a learnable skill, and it follows a few consistent principles.
Move up on the sheltered side. The sheltered side of the bunch — the side away from the wind — is where gaps appear naturally. Riders drift slightly apart, creating channels you can move through without forcing your way. The exposed side is compressed because everyone is trying to shelter, and forcing through there creates problems.
Move when the pace is steady, not during surges. When the bunch is accelerating, everyone is focused on holding their position and holding wheels. There is no room to move. When the pace is steady or easing, riders relax slightly, gaps appear, and you can move forward with minimal disruption.
Be assertive but predictable. Hold your line. Do not swerve. If you are moving into a gap, move smoothly and decisively. A slight nudge of your elbow against another rider's elbow is normal and signals your presence. What is not acceptable is diving into a gap without warning, cutting across someone's wheel, or making sudden directional changes.
Protect your front wheel. Your front wheel overlapping another rider's rear wheel is the single most common cause of crashes in bunch racing. When you are moving through the bunch, keep your front wheel clear. If someone moves across in front of you and your wheels overlap, ease off immediately. Do not try to squeeze through. The gap will open again.
Cornering in the Bunch
Cornering in a bunch at speed is one of the most intimidating aspects of road racing, and it is also one of the most misunderstood.
The Inside Line Myth
The instinct for most new racers is to take the inside line on every corner. It is the shortest distance around the turn, so it must be the fastest. Right?
Wrong. In a bunch, the inside line is usually the slowest line. Here is why. The rider who dives inside on a corner has to brake harder because the turning radius is tighter. They then have to accelerate harder out of the corner because they have shed more speed. They exit the corner at a lower speed than the rider who took a wider, smoother line through the turn.
Over the course of a 60-minute race with 30 or 40 corners, those repeated braking and acceleration efforts add up. The rider who dives inside every time is doing significantly more work than the rider who holds a smooth, consistent line through the apex.
What Actually Works
Hold your line. Pick a line through the corner and stick to it. Do not deviate. The riders around you are making their own calculations about where you will be — if you suddenly change your line mid-corner, you create a risk for everyone.
Look through the corner. Your bike goes where your eyes go. Look at where you want to exit the corner, not at the wheel in front of you or the kerb beside you. This sounds basic, but under the pressure of racing in a tight bunch, most riders fixate on the wheel ahead and their cornering tightens as a result.
Do not brake mid-corner. All your braking should be done before the turn. Scrub speed on the straight approach, then carry your momentum through the corner. Braking mid-corner reduces traction and makes your line less predictable. If you need to adjust speed in the corner, ease off the pedals rather than touching the brakes.
Exit with speed. The moment you are through the apex, start pedalling. The rider who is first on the power out of a corner gains a bike length every time. Over 40 corners, that is 40 free bike lengths gained without any extra effort.
The Seven Mistakes That Keep Fit Riders Mid-Pack
Here is a checklist of the most common Cat 4 errors. Every one of them is fixable.
Going too hard in the first third. The opening of a Cat 4 race is chaotic and fast. Every instinct says to match the pace, to prove you belong. Do not. Sit in the wheels, let the nervous energy burn off around you, and wait for the pace to settle. The riders who go to the front in the first 20 minutes are almost never the ones on the podium.
Responding to every attack. Not every move deserves a response. A solo rider off the front in the first half of a Cat 4 race is coming back — the bunch will catch them without your help. Save your energy for the moves that matter: coordinated attacks by multiple riders in the second half.
Sitting at the back. The accordion effect makes the back of the bunch the hardest, most energy-expensive, and most dangerous place to race. It is not polite. It is not safe. Move up.
Burning matches in the first half. Every hard effort is a match. You have a finite number in a race. If you burn 70 per cent of them in the first 50 per cent of the race, you arrive at the business end with nothing. Race negative splits — easier in the first half, harder in the second.
Not eating or drinking. In a race over 60 minutes, you need fuel. A gel at 30 minutes and another at 60 minutes. A few sips from your bottle every 15 minutes. Dehydration and glycogen depletion do not announce themselves gradually — they hit a cliff, and once you are over it, no amount of grit brings you back.
Panicking in tight spaces. The bunch gets tight. Elbows touch. You can hear the rider beside you breathing. This is normal. If you flinch, swerve, or brake every time someone gets close, you create danger and you waste energy. Relax your shoulders, bend your elbows, keep your weight low, and ride your bike. The less tense your upper body, the more stable your bike.
Not knowing the course. The climb at 3km to go. The tight left-hander before the finishing straight. The crosswind section on the back road. If you do not know these things before the race, you cannot plan for them. Ride the course beforehand if possible. Study the map if not. Know where the race will be decided before it gets decided.
Building Your Race Library
Race craft develops through repetition. There is no substitute for pinning on a number and riding in a bunch. But you can accelerate the learning by treating every race as data.
After each race, spend five minutes writing down three things: what went well, what went wrong, and what you would do differently. Look at your power file. Where did you waste energy? Where did you make good tactical decisions? Where did you get caught out of position?
After 10 races, patterns emerge. You learn that you always lose position on the same corner. That you always respond to attacks too eagerly. That you always leave it too late to move up for the finale. Those patterns are your race library — the tactical knowledge that no training plan can give you.
Watch professional racing with tactical eyes. Ignore the commentary about who is the strongest. Watch where the winning rider sits in the bunch for the first three hours. Watch how they move up without effort. Watch how they respond to attacks — or, more often, how they do not respond. The principles scale down to Cat 4, even if the speed does not.
The Honest Truth About Cat 4 Racing
You will not win your first Cat 4 race on tactics alone. You will not win your fifth. But you will stop finishing mid-pack. You will stop wondering how less fit riders keep beating you. And you will start having the legs for the finale instead of surviving it.
The riders who progress through the categories fastest are not always the strongest. They are the ones who learn fastest — who treat every race as a lesson, who make mistakes early and correct them quickly, who understand that positioning, energy management, and race awareness matter as much as power numbers.
