The gap between bib shorts and socks — typically the shin and calf — receives substantial UV exposure, particularly on longer rides when the legs are in constant motion. SPF Selection: What the Numbers Actually Mean

There is a persistent belief that SPF 50 is dramatically better than SPF 30. The actual figures tell a clearer story.

SPF 30 blocks approximately 96.7 percent of UVB radiation. SPF 50 blocks approximately 98 percent. The difference is 1.3 percentage points. In practical terms, SPF 30 lets through roughly twice as much UV as SPF 50 — which sounds significant until you consider what actually determines your protection level.

The single biggest variable is not the SPF number. It is how much you apply and how often you reapply. The SPF rating on the bottle is tested at an application density of 2mg per square centimetre of skin. Sweat resistance. Look for products labelled "very water resistant" with a minimum 80-minute rating. This is the highest water-resistance classification available under EU and FDA testing standards. Apply before you kit up. The most effective sunscreen application happens at home, 15 to 20 minutes before you leave, before you put on your jersey and bibs. This gives the product time to bond to the skin and ensures you cover the areas that clothing will partially expose — the neck, the gap between jersey and shorts when you stand, the wrist area where gloves end.

Lip Protection: The Area Most Cyclists Ignore

Here is where it gets really interesting — and really important. Your lips have virtually no melanin. They cannot produce a protective tan. The vermilion border (the red part of your lip) has a thin stratum corneum, minimal pigmentation, and almost no natural defence against UV radiation.
