The tradition goes back decades. Eddy Merckx had his. So did Bernard Hinault. But tradition isn't evidence. And the question most amateur cyclists never bother to ask — because the pros do it, so it must work — is this: what is sports massage actually doing? What's real, what's ritual, and where's the line between a useful recovery tool and an expensive hour you could spend sleeping?
I've spent time with soigneurs, physiotherapists, and sports scientists across hundreds of podcast episodes. The answer is more complicated than the massage industry wants you to believe, and more interesting than the sceptics give it credit for.
What Sports Massage Actually Does
Strip away the marketing language — the "flushing toxins," the "breaking down adhesions," the "releasing knots" — and you're left with something simpler and, honestly, more useful than any of those claims.
Sports massage applies sustained mechanical pressure to soft tissue. That pressure does several things the research supports:
- Reduces perceived muscle soreness. Study after study confirms this. A 2012 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found consistent reductions in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) when massage was applied after exercise. You feel less sore. That's real.
- Improves range of motion temporarily. Massage increases tissue compliance for a window of roughly 24-48 hours. This is useful if cycling has left you tight and you need to move freely before the next session.
- Lowers cortisol and raises parasympathetic tone. Lying on a table, breathing slowly, having someone work through your muscles — it downregulates your stress response. For athletes carrying chronic training fatigue, this matters more than most people realise.
- Improves perception of recovery. You get off the table feeling better. That's not nothing. Perceived recovery predicts training quality the next day more reliably than most objective markers.
That's the list. It's not short. But notice what's missing.
What It Does Not Do
Sports massage does not flush lactic acid. Your body clears lactate within an hour of exercise regardless of what you do. The idea that massage "pushes waste products out of the muscles" persists because it sounds intuitive and therapists have been repeating it for forty years. The physiology doesn't support it.
It does not break down scar tissue. Scar tissue remodels in response to progressive loading over weeks and months. The force a therapist applies with their hands is nowhere near enough to mechanically deform mature collagen fibres. If it were, the pain would be unbearable.
It does not remove "knots" in the way most people imagine. Those tender, taut spots — trigger points — are a neurological phenomenon, not a structural one. Massage can temporarily reduce their sensitivity, but the mechanism is neurological modulation, not mechanical destruction.
This distinction matters. Not because massage is useless — it clearly isn't — but because understanding the actual mechanism helps you use it better.
The Science: Neurological, Not Mechanical
The most important shift in how sports scientists understand massage happened in the last fifteen years. The old model was mechanical: press the tissue, squeeze out metabolites, align fibres. During a Training Block: Once Per Week, Mid-Week
If you're in a heavy training block — think structured build phase with four or five quality sessions — a maintenance massage mid-week keeps accumulated tension in check. Schedule it on a recovery day, ideally with at least 24 hours before your next hard session.
Self-Massage: The Five Key Areas for Cyclists
You can replicate 70-80 per cent of what a professional does for day-to-day maintenance. The tools are simple: a foam roller, a lacrosse ball, and your own hands. The investment is about thirty quid and ten minutes of your time after rides.
Here are the five areas that matter most for cyclists, in order of priority.
1. Quadriceps
Your quads do the bulk of the pedalling work. They accumulate more fatigue and tension than any other muscle group during a ride.
Foam roller protocol: Lie face down with the roller under your thighs. Roll from just above the knee to just below the hip crease. Spend 60-90 seconds per leg, pausing on tender spots for 10-15 seconds. Turn your leg slightly inward and outward to hit the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis. Keep the pressure moderate — you should be able to breathe normally through it.
2. Hip Flexors and Psoas
Cycling holds the hip in flexion for hours. The psoas and iliacus shorten and tighten. This drives lower-back pain, limits hip extension, and can reduce glute activation at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
Lacrosse ball protocol: Lie face down with a lacrosse ball placed just inside the bony front of your hip (the ASIS). Let your body weight sink into the ball. Breathe. Hold for 30-60 seconds, then shift the ball slightly medially or laterally to find adjacent tight spots. This is uncomfortable but shouldn't be sharp or radiating. Two to three positions per side, three to four times per week.
3. IT Band Region
The IT band itself is a thick, fibrous structure that doesn't really "release" under a foam roller. But the muscles that feed into it — the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) at the top and the vastus lateralis alongside it — do respond to pressure.
Foam roller protocol: Lie on your side with the roller under your outer thigh. Rather than rolling up and down (which mostly just hurts), position the roller on the upper third of the outer thigh and slowly roll forward and backward to work the TFL and the junction where the quad meets the IT band. Sixty seconds per side. If direct lateral rolling is too painful, you're pressing too hard or rolling the wrong structure.
4. Calves (Gastrocnemius and Soleus)
The calf complex works throughout the pedal stroke, particularly at the bottom where the ankle plantarflexes. Tight calves contribute to Achilles issues and can alter pedal mechanics.
Foam roller protocol: Sit on the floor with the roller under one calf. Cross the other leg on top for additional pressure. Roll from the Achilles tendon to just below the knee. Rotate the leg inward and outward to cover the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius. Sixty seconds per leg. For the deeper soleus, bend the knee slightly and focus the roller on the lower third of the calf.
5. Thoracic Spine
Hours in the drops or on the hoods leaves the upper back stiff and rounded. Thoracic mobility affects your breathing mechanics, shoulder comfort, and ability to hold an aerodynamic position.
Foam roller protocol: Lie on your back with the roller across your mid-back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Cross your arms over your chest or support your head with your hands. Extend gently over the roller, opening the chest towards the ceiling. Move the roller up or down one vertebral segment and repeat. Five to six positions, three to five extensions at each. This is a mobility drill, not a pressure drill — let gravity do the work.
The Daily Minimum
After a hard ride: quads and calves on the foam roller, two minutes each side. That's under ten minutes and covers the highest-fatigue areas.
After an easy ride or rest day: add the hip flexors and thoracic spine work. Fifteen minutes total.
Do this consistently and you'll notice three things within a fortnight: less morning stiffness, better comfort on the bike in the final hour of long rides, and reduced need for professional massage visits.
Massage Guns: How to Use Them Properly
The percussion massage gun has become the default recovery tool for cyclists. Everyone owns one. Most people use them badly.
A massage gun delivers rapid percussive strokes to soft tissue. The mechanism is similar to manual massage — mechanoreceptor stimulation, temporary pain modulation, increased local blood flow — but faster and more superficial than a therapist's hands.
What They're Good For
- Post-ride quad and calf work. Two to three minutes per muscle group at moderate speed and pressure. The gun should float across the muscle, not dig into one spot. Think "scanning" rather than "drilling."
- Pre-ride activation. Fifteen to twenty seconds per major muscle group at lower intensity can increase blood flow and reduce stiffness before you clip in. This is a warm-up assist, not a treatment.
- Reaching the mid-back solo. Guns with an angled head can access the thoracic paraspinals — muscles alongside the spine — that are difficult to hit with a foam roller or your own hands.
What They're Not Good For
- Deep structural problems. A gun is superficial. If you have a properly restricted psoas or deep piriformis issue, percussive therapy on the surface won't reach the problem.
- Already-irritated tissue. If a muscle is acutely sore, inflamed, or feels "angry," hammering it with a massage gun makes things worse. The temptation is to attack the sore spot. Resist it. Light pressure or nothing at all is the right call for the first 24 hours after hard exercise.
- Bony areas and nerves. Keep the gun away from the spine directly, the front of the shin (the bone, not the muscle), the inner elbow, and the back of the knee. These are areas where nerves run close to the surface and percussion causes more harm than benefit.
The Protocol
After a hard ride, before your shower: quads (2 minutes each), hamstrings (90 seconds each), calves (60 seconds each), glutes (90 seconds each). Medium speed setting. Let the weight of the gun provide the pressure — don't push it into the muscle. Total time: roughly 12 minutes. Pair it with the foam roller routine on alternate days rather than doubling up.
When to See a Professional
Self-massage covers maintenance. But there are situations where a trained pair of hands is worth every penny.
Specific, Persistent Problems
If your lower back has been grumbling for three weeks and foam rolling isn't shifting it, a therapist can assess whether the issue is muscular, joint-related, or referred from the hip. They can reach the deep hip rotators — piriformis, obturator internus, gemelli — that no foam roller can access.
Asymmetries You Cannot Feel
A good therapist will notice that your left hip is tighter than your right, or that your right thoracic rotation is restricted. You adapt to your own imbalances and stop noticing them. Someone else's hands find what yours miss.
Pre-Season Assessment
At the start of a training block or racing season, a single session with a therapist who understands cycling gives you a baseline. They can flag restrictions that will cause problems under load — a tight psoas that's fine at 8 hours per week but will refer pain at 14, or a chronically tight calf that's a tendinopathy waiting to happen.
During Race Blocks or Stage Events
If you're racing multiple days — a stage race, a weekend of criteriums, or back-to-back sportives — professional massage between events can manage accumulated fatigue that self-massage cannot. This is the one scenario where the World Tour soigneur model scales down to amateurs.
When Self-Treatment Isn't Helping
Simple rule: if you've been consistent with self-massage for two weeks and a problem isn't improving, stop and get professional hands on it. Something else is going on and you need someone who can diagnose, not just treat.
What to Look For in a Therapist
Not all massage therapists are equal. A spa therapist and a sports massage therapist are trained differently, work differently, and produce different outcomes.
Look for someone who works with endurance athletes. Cycling creates specific patterns — quad dominance, hip flexor shortening, thoracic extension deficit, glute inhibition — that a therapist needs to recognise. Ask whether they have cyclists or runners on their books. If their clientele is entirely office workers with neck pain, they'll be competent but not specific.
They should assess before they treat. A therapist who has you on the table within thirty seconds of walking in is skipping the most important step. A good practitioner asks about your training, your riding position, your recent load, any pain patterns. They might watch you walk or squat or do a Thomas test for hip flexor length. Treatment without assessment is guesswork.
Communication during the session matters. Are they telling you what they're finding? Explaining why your left glute is firing differently from your right? Giving you homework — specific stretches, exercises, or self-massage targets for between sessions? A therapist who works in silence and sends you home without advice is leaving half the value on the table.
Qualifications vary by country, but look for: a Level 4 sports massage qualification (in the UK and Ireland), a degree or postgraduate certificate in sports therapy, or membership of a professional body like the ISRM, SMA, or equivalent. Ask. A good therapist won't be offended.
Price is a weak signal. An expensive therapist in a fancy clinic isn't necessarily better than a sole practitioner working from a converted garage. Ask for recommendations from other cyclists in your club or local riding community. Word of mouth is the most reliable filter.

After every hard ride: 8-10 minutes of foam rolling — quads, calves, and hip flexors as minimum. Or a massage gun session covering the same areas.
Twice per week: a 15-minute extended session adding the IT band region and thoracic spine work. Best done on recovery or rest days.
Every 2-4 weeks: a professional sports massage session, 45-60 minutes, focusing on areas that self-massage doesn't cover — deep hip rotators, thoracic paraspinals, posterior shoulder complex.
Race week: no deep massage in the final 48-72 hours. Light foam rolling only. Book a deeper session for 2-3 days after the event.
