You do not buy a cycling camera because you want to become a content creator. You buy one because on the day somebody pulls out of a junction without looking, the difference between a successful insurance claim and a frustrating dead end is 30 seconds of footage sitting on a memory card.
I have been riding on roads for years. I have had close passes that made my stomach drop. I have had wing mirrors clip my elbow. And for most of that time, every single one of those incidents existed only in my memory — which is worth precisely nothing to an insurer, a solicitor, or a police officer.
Here's the thing nobody tells you about road incidents: the driver almost never stops. And even when they do, their version of events will be different from yours. A camera removes the argument entirely. It turns your word against theirs into footage that speaks for itself.
Why Every Cyclist Should Be Running a Camera
The statistics are grim. Cycling UK reports that thousands of cyclists are injured in road incidents every year across the UK and Ireland. The majority involve a motor vehicle. And in a depressing number of those cases, the cyclist has no evidence beyond their own account.
Insurance claims without evidence are slow, stressful, and frequently unsuccessful. A witness helps. A police report helps more. But clear video footage showing the incident, the vehicle, and ideally the registration plate — that changes everything. Claims that might take months of back-and-forth can be resolved in weeks when the footage is unambiguous.
This is not about catching bad drivers on camera for social media. This is about protecting yourself financially and legally on the day something goes wrong. Because that day comes for more cyclists than any of us want to admit. That moment's absolutely no fun, and you want every possible advantage.
Front vs Rear: Where Should Your Camera Point?
Here's where it gets really interesting, because most people get this backwards. The instinct is to mount a camera on your handlebars, pointing forward, because that is how dashcams work in cars. But for cyclists, the rear-facing camera is more important.
Think about where the danger comes from. Close passes. Rear-end approaches at junctions. Aggressive overtakes. Vehicles pulling alongside and turning left across your path. The overwhelming majority of dangerous interactions happen behind you or beside you — not in front.
A forward-facing camera captures junctions, red-light runners, and vehicles pulling out. Those incidents matter. But a rear camera captures the stuff you cannot see — and that is where the most frightening incidents live.
What most people do vs what actually works
Most people buy a GoPro, strap it to their helmet or handlebars, and call it done. The camera faces forward, the battery lasts 90 minutes, and the footage sits on an SD card they never look at until it is too late.
What actually works is a dedicated rear camera running every single ride, recording on a loop, with incident detection that automatically saves the important clip. You press the power button when you leave the house. You forget about it. And on the day you need it, the footage is there.
If budget allows, run both front and rear. But if you are choosing one, the rear camera comes first.
The Features That Actually Matter
Camera manufacturers love specifications. They will throw numbers at you — megapixels, field of view, frame rates — until your head spins. Let me break this down to what matters for safety and evidence.
Resolution: 1080p minimum, 4K if you can afford it
For police and insurance purposes, you need to read number plates. At 1080p and 30 frames per second, a plate is legible at roughly 5-8 metres depending on the lens. At 4K, that distance extends considerably, and the detail captured in each frame gives solicitors and insurers far less room to argue about what happened.
720p is not enough. Anything below 1080p and you are recording blurry shapes that prove an incident happened but cannot identify who was responsible. That is a critical distinction.
Battery life: the feature that makes or breaks everything
A camera that dies two hours into your ride is an expensive paperweight. Commuters might get away with shorter battery life, but if you ride sportives, do long weekend spins, or simply forget to charge things, you need endurance.
Look for 5-7 hours of recording time. The Cycliq Fly6 range and Garmin Varia RCT715 both sit in this territory for rear cameras. Front cameras tend to drain faster because of higher resolution demands, but 3-4 hours is a reasonable minimum.
The good news: battery technology keeps improving. Units from 2024-2025 onwards are noticeably better than their predecessors.
Loop recording and incident detection
Loop recording means the camera writes footage in short segments — usually 3 or 5 minutes — and when the memory card fills up, it overwrites the oldest file. You never run out of space. You never have to manage files. The camera just runs.
Incident detection is the feature that protects you when you cannot protect yourself. An accelerometer inside the camera detects sudden deceleration — a crash, a hard swerve, an emergency stop — and locks that file so it cannot be overwritten. If you are lying on the tarmac unable to think straight, the camera has already saved the evidence.
These two features together are what separate a cycling safety camera from a generic action camera strapped to your bike.
Stabilisation and wide-angle lens
Electronic image stabilisation reduces the vibration and bounce that makes bike-mounted footage unwatchable. A wide-angle lens — 120 degrees or more — captures more of the road, including vehicles approaching from the side. Both matter for evidence quality, because shaky narrow-angle footage makes it harder for anyone reviewing the clip to understand what happened.
Mounting: Where You Put It Changes What It Captures
Three main options. Each has trade-offs.
Seatpost mount (rear cameras)
This is the gold standard for rear-facing evidence. The camera sits behind you, pointing backwards, at roughly the height of a car's headlights. It captures overtaking vehicles at an angle that clearly shows the gap between car and bike. The footage is stable because the seatpost absorbs less road vibration than a helmet. And the camera is visible to drivers — which matters for deterrence.
The downside: your seatpost bag or saddle bag might obscure the lens. Check your setup before you ride.
Handlebar mount (front cameras)
Stable, low vibration, easy to check the camera is running with a quick glance down. Good for front-facing footage of junctions and oncoming vehicles. The downside: your hands and body can partially obscure the frame, and in the drops position on a road bike, the camera angle can shift to point at the road surface rather than ahead.
A stem mount or out-front mount solves the body-obstruction problem. The Garmin and Wahoo out-front mounts work with camera adapters from several manufacturers.
Helmet mount
Captures exactly what you see, which makes for compelling evidence because the viewer sees your perspective. Good for capturing the moment you looked at a vehicle, establishing that you were aware of the hazard.
The downside: head movement introduces significant shake. Every time you check over your shoulder, the footage lurches. And the mounting is less secure — a camera flying off your helmet at 40 km/h is not ideal.
For most riders, seatpost rear plus handlebar front is the strongest combination. Helmet mounting works best as a third camera or as a primary if you already own a GoPro and want to use it.
Dedicated Cycling Cameras vs Action Cameras
This is the classic debate, and it is worth getting into the specifics.
Purpose-built cycling cameras
The Cycliq Fly6 (rear) and Fly12 (front) are the best-known dedicated cycling cameras. They combine a camera with a light — so the unit replaces your tail light or headlight while recording. The Garmin Varia RCT715 combines a rear-facing camera with Garmin's radar technology, alerting you to approaching vehicles on your head unit while recording them.
These cameras are designed for the task. Loop recording, incident detection, long battery life, cycling-specific mounts, and integration with bike computers. They do one thing and they do it well.
Action cameras (GoPro, DJI, Insta360)
Superb image quality. Incredible stabilisation. Wide ecosystem of mounts. But they are not designed for all-day safety recording. Battery life is typically 1.5-2.5 hours. File management is manual. There is no loop recording or incident detection built in. And the form factor is bulkier than purpose-built units.
If you already own a GoPro, use it as your front camera. It will produce beautiful, smooth footage that works well for evidence. But do not rely on it as your sole safety camera, and absolutely do not rely on it for rear-facing coverage. Pair it with a dedicated rear camera and you get the best of both worlds.
The integrated camera-light combination
Here's where it gets really interesting for riders who hate clutter on their bikes. The Cycliq range and the Garmin Varia RCT715 replace a light you would already be running. You do not add a device to your bike — you swap a light for a smarter light. One mount point, one charging cable, one thing to remember. For riders who struggle to maintain a charging routine for multiple devices, this simplification is significant.
Using Footage for Insurance Claims
The footage exists. An incident has happened. Now what?
First: preserve the original file immediately. Copy it to your computer and back it up to a cloud service. Do not edit it. Do not trim it. Do not adjust the brightness or contrast. Insurers and solicitors need the raw, unmodified file. Any editing — even well-intentioned tidying — can be used to question the authenticity of the evidence.
Second: note the metadata. Date, time, location. The camera embeds this in the file, but write it down separately as well. If the camera's clock was wrong, you want to be able to correct the record.
Third: report to the police if appropriate. In the UK, you can submit footage through your local force's online portal. Many forces participate in Operation Snap, which accepts dashcam and cycling camera footage for review. The submission window is typically 14 days, so do not sit on the footage.
Fourth: contact your insurer or solicitor. Provide the raw footage file, your written account of the incident, and any photographs of injuries or bike damage. The combination of video evidence, a written statement, and photographic documentation gives your claim the strongest possible foundation.
One critical detail: make sure your camera's date and time are set correctly. Footage timestamped with the wrong date creates confusion that slows everything down. Check this when you first set the camera up and verify it periodically.
Privacy and the Law
You have the right to record video in public spaces in the UK and Ireland, including on public roads. There is no law against filming your rides. But GDPR applies to what you do with that footage afterwards.
Submitting footage to the police is lawful. Providing it to your insurer for a claim is lawful. These are legitimate purposes under data protection law.
Uploading unblurred footage of identifiable individuals to YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram sits in murkier territory. If the footage shows a criminal act or a clear road offence, there is a public interest argument. But routinely uploading clips of drivers — even bad drivers — with their faces and registration plates visible, without their knowledge or consent, creates GDPR exposure that most cyclists have not thought through.
The practical advice: submit evidence to the proper channels. If you want to share footage publicly, blur faces and registration plates. It takes a few extra minutes and it keeps you on solid legal ground.
The Deterrent Effect: Cameras Change Driver Behaviour
This is the part that makes the investment worthwhile even if you never file a claim.
Research from the University of Queensland found that drivers give more room to cyclists they believe are recording. Visible rear cameras and camera warning stickers on bikes encouraged wider overtakes. The camera is not just an evidence tool — it is a deterrent.
In the UK, close-pass reporting schemes have formalised this effect. Operation Snap, active across England and Wales, allows cyclists and other road users to submit video evidence of dangerous driving. West Midlands Police, one of the pioneers, reported that their close-pass initiative reduced dangerous overtakes in the areas they targeted. Every submission adds to the enforcement data, even if an individual clip does not result in prosecution.
Your camera footage contributes to a larger picture. Over time, that data shapes policing priorities, road design decisions, and driver awareness campaigns. A single camera on a single bike is part of a network of evidence that makes roads safer for everyone.
Practical Tips: Making It a Habit
The best camera is the one you actually run every ride. Here is how to make that happen.
Build a charging routine
Camera goes on the charger next to your phone charger, every night. Not when you remember. Not when the battery warning flashes. Every night. Treat it like plugging in your phone — automatic, mindless, non-negotiable. A flat camera is the same as no camera.
Storage management
If your camera uses loop recording, storage largely takes care of itself. But check the SD card every few months. Cards degrade over time, especially with continuous write cycles. Replace yours annually — a 64GB or 128GB micro SD card costs less than a coffee and a cake, and a corrupted card on the day you need the footage is a disaster.
Use a high-endurance card rated for dashcam or continuous recording use. Standard cards are not designed for the write patterns a cycling camera demands.
Pre-ride check
Takes five seconds. Power the camera on. Confirm the light or recording indicator is active. Done. Build it into your pre-ride routine alongside checking your tyres and filling your bottles. If the camera is not recording when you leave the house, it will not be recording when the incident happens.
File naming and organisation
If you pull footage off the camera for a specific incident, rename the file with the date and a brief description. "2026-07-10_Close_Pass_A24_Southbound" is findable. "GH010047.MP4" is not. Store incident footage in a dedicated folder, backed up to a second location.
The Cost Argument: An Insurance Policy for Your Body
A dedicated rear camera costs between 100 and 250 pounds. A front camera adds a similar amount. Call it 200-450 pounds for a full front-and-rear setup.
Now think about what that protects. A crashed carbon frame — thousands. Dental work after a face-first impact — thousands. Lost earnings while you recover from a broken collarbone — potentially tens of thousands. And all of that is before you consider the stress, the pain, and the months off the bike.
A cycling camera is not an accessory. It is an insurance policy for your body, your bike, and your financial exposure when somebody else's mistake puts you on the ground. The cost is trivial compared to a single unresolved claim where the driver says you swerved and you have nothing to prove otherwise.
Fixable. Affordable. And the one piece of kit you hope you never need — but will be profoundly grateful for on the day you do.
