BIKE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE: WHAT TO CHECK AND WHEN SO NOTHING FAILS MID-RIDE

  • Every mechanical I have ever had on the road traces back to something I could have spotted in my garage. The bike tried to tell me. I was not listening.
  • A sixty-second pre-ride check catches eighty per cent of the issues that strand riders. Tyres, brakes, chain. It takes less time than filling your bottles.
  • Chain wear is the single most expensive thing to ignore. A fifteen-quid chain replacement becomes a hundred-and-fifty-quid drivetrain replacement if you let it stretch too far.

Every mechanical I have ever had on the road — every single one — traces back to something I could have spotted in my garage. A worn brake pad I knew was getting thin. A chain I kept meaning to replace. A bolt that had worked loose over three months of vibration.

The bike tried to tell me. I just was not listening.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about bike maintenance: the hard part is not the work itself. Most of what keeps your bike reliable takes less time than making a coffee. The hard part is building the habit. Knowing what to check. Knowing when to check it. And knowing the difference between something that can wait and something that will leave you stranded 60 kilometres from home.

This is the schedule. Daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal. Everything your bike needs, when it needs it, and how to tell when something has gone from "fine" to "about to fail." Most of this comes from Park Tool's service standards and Sheldon Brown's manuals — the two references every working mechanic I have spoken to keeps coming back to.

The 60-Second Pre-Ride Check

This is the one that matters most. Not because it is complicated, but because it catches roughly 80% of the problems that strand riders mid-ride. It takes less time than filling your bottles.

Tyres. Squeeze both tyres. You are checking two things: pressure and condition. Low pressure is obvious — the tyre gives too easily under your thumb. But while you are squeezing, run your eye around the tread and sidewall. You are looking for cuts, embedded glass, bulges, or cracks. A tyre with a visible sidewall thread is a tyre that is about to blow out.

Get a track pump with a gauge and use it. Tyre pressure is not a feel thing. It is a number. Check it before every ride. Tyres lose 10-15 psi overnight through the latex or butyl — that is normal. What is not normal is a tyre that was at 80 psi last night and is at 40 this morning. That is a slow puncture, and riding on it will pinch the tube or roll the tyre off the rim.

Brakes. Pull each brake lever. It should engage firmly well before the lever reaches the handlebar. If you can pull the lever all the way to the bar, your brakes are either worn out or badly adjusted. Neither is acceptable.

For disc brakes, spin each wheel and listen. A light brush is normal — disc brake rotors often rub slightly and it costs you nothing meaningful. A grinding metal-on-metal noise means your pads are gone and you are braking on the backing plate against the rotor. That will score your rotor and turn a £20 pad swap into a £60 rotor replacement.

Chain. Look at it. Is it dry? Is it caked in black grime? A dry chain is louder than a lubed one — you can hear the difference immediately. Give it a spin and listen. A well-lubed chain is nearly silent. A dry chain sounds like a bag of screws.

If the chain is dry, lube it. One drop per link on the inner plates, backpedal for 30 seconds, wipe off the excess. That is it. Takes 60 seconds and prevents the single most expensive cascade failure on a bicycle: a worn chain eating your cassette and chainrings.

Quick releases and thru-axles. Give each wheel a firm tug to make sure it is secure. This should be muscle memory. It takes two seconds. The alternative is a wheel coming loose in a corner.

That is the entire pre-ride check. Tyres, brakes, chain, wheels. Sixty seconds. Do it every time you roll the bike out of the garage.

Weekly Checks: 10 Minutes That Save You Hours

Set a day. I do mine on Sundays before the long ride. It does not matter which day — what matters is consistency.

Drivetrain Clean

Your chain, cassette, and chainrings collect road grime, old lubricant, and grit every time you ride. That grit acts as a grinding paste — it accelerates wear on every moving part it touches.

Once a week, wipe the chain with a clean rag while backpedalling. You do not need a full degrease — that is a monthly job. Just get the surface grime off. Then check the cassette and chainrings for packed-in crud. An old toothbrush works. A Park Tool GSC-1 gear brush works better and costs about £8.

After cleaning, re-lube the chain. One drop per link. Backpedal. Wipe excess. The biggest mistake people make with chain lube is using too much. Excess lube attracts more dirt, which defeats the entire point. Sheldon Brown was right: "a properly lubed chain should not look wet."

Bolt Check

Vibration loosens bolts. It happens slowly, imperceptibly, and then one day your bottle cage falls off mid-ride or your seatpost slips two centimetres on a climb.

Check these weekly:

  • Stem bolts — these hold your handlebars on. Loose stem bolts are dangerous. The Park Tool recommendation is 5-6 Nm for a 4-bolt faceplate.
  • Seatpost clamp — if your seatpost is slipping, this is why. 5-7 Nm for most clamps.
  • Bottle cage bolts — the most commonly lost bolt on a bicycle. 3-4 Nm.
  • Brake caliper mounting bolts — loose calipers cause brake rub, poor braking, or both. 6-8 Nm for most mounts.

You do not need to torque every bolt every week. Just give each one a firm finger check — if it moves at all, get the torque wrench out.

Tyre Inspection

Go beyond the pre-ride squeeze. Once a week, spin each wheel slowly and inspect the entire tread and sidewall under good light. You are looking for:

  • Embedded glass or flint that has not yet caused a puncture but will
  • Cuts deeper than 1mm in the tread
  • Sidewall scuffing from rubbing against a kerb
  • Cracking in the rubber, especially near the bead

Pull out any embedded debris with a sharp point — a needle or the tip of a knife. If a cut goes through to the casing, the tyre is done. Replace it before it blows on a descent.

Wheel True

Spin each wheel in the frame and watch the gap between the rim and the brake pad (rim brakes) or the fork/stay (disc brakes). A wheel that wobbles side to side by more than 1-2mm needs truing.

Minor truing is a skill worth learning. A spoke key costs £5 and Park Tool's truing guide is free online. But if the wobble is severe — more than 3-4mm — or the wheel has a radial hop, take it to a wheelbuilder. Aggressive DIY truing with no experience creates more problems than it solves.

Monthly Checks: The Stuff That Creeps Up on You

Monthly checks catch the slow degraders — the things that get marginally worse each week until one day something fails and you cannot work out when it went wrong.

Chain Wear

This is the single most important monthly check. A stretched chain destroys your cassette and chainrings. Replacing a chain costs £15-25. Replacing a cassette costs £30-80. Replacing chainrings costs £40-100. Let the chain go too long and you are replacing all three at once.

Get a chain checker. The Park Tool CC-3.2 is the standard. Place it on the chain. If the tool drops fully in at the 0.5% mark, replace the chain immediately if you are running 11- or 12-speed. For 10-speed and below, you have until 0.75%, but do not push it.

Check chain wear every 500 miles or once a month, whichever comes first. Most riders get 2,000-3,000 miles from a chain, but wet-weather riders or anyone neglecting lubrication will see 1,500 or less.

Here's where it gets really interesting: if you replace chains religiously at 0.5%, a single cassette can last through three or four chains — 8,000-12,000 miles. If you ignore chain wear and replace at 1.0%, you will need a new cassette with every chain. The maths is brutal.

Brake Pads

Rim brake pads have wear indicator grooves moulded into the braking surface. When the grooves disappear, the pad is finished. Check monthly by looking straight at the pad face. Takes ten seconds per wheel.

Also check pad alignment. The pad should strike the rim squarely, not ride up onto the tyre (which will cut the sidewall) or down below the rim (which reduces braking power and can catch on the spokes).

Disc brake pads are harder to inspect because they sit inside the caliper. Remove the wheel and look between the pads. You want at least 1mm of braking compound remaining on each pad. If the metallic backing plate is visible, the pads are overdue.

Most riders get 1,000-3,000 miles from disc brake pads. Wet-weather riders and heavier riders will be at the lower end. Alpine riders who descend long passes will be lower still.

The good news: replacing disc brake pads is a five-minute job. Push the pistons back with a tyre lever or a flat-head screwdriver, slide the old pads out, slide the new ones in. No tools beyond a hex key required.

Cable Tension

This is the maintenance item that degrades so gradually you stop noticing. Shift cables stretch. Brake cables stretch. Housing compresses at the ferrules. The result is shifting that gets slightly worse each week until one day you cannot reach your lowest gear and the front derailleur starts rubbing in every position.

The fix takes two minutes. Find the barrel adjuster on your derailleur — it is the small knurled cylinder where the cable enters. Turn it counter-clockwise in half-turn increments until shifting snaps back to crisp. That is it.

If barrel adjusters cannot restore clean shifting, the cables need replacing. That is a seasonal job — see below.

For brake cables, the check is simple: pull the lever and see where it engages. If the engagement point has crept closer to the handlebar compared to when the brakes were last set up, the cable has stretched. Barrel adjuster at the brake caliper, counter-clockwise, half-turn at a time.

Headset

Stand next to the bike and apply the front brake firmly. Rock the bike forward and backward. Any clunking or clicking from the front end means the headset is loose.

A loose headset is more than annoying. It causes impact damage to the bearings, which creates a notch — a point where the steering settles into one position. Once a headset is notched, it needs replacing.

The fix is simple: loosen the stem bolts, tighten the top cap bolt until the play disappears (firm but not over-tight — you should still be able to turn the bars smoothly), then re-tighten the stem bolts to spec.

Pedal Cleats

If your shoes twist out of the pedals more easily than they used to, your cleats are worn. Flip the shoes over and look. Worn cleats have visible material loss at the engagement edges and the release tabs.

Riding on worn cleats is a knee injury waiting to happen. The float increases unpredictably, and one day your foot will release when you are standing on a climb. Replace cleats every 3,000-5,000 miles, or whenever they show visible wear at the contact surfaces.

Seasonal Overhaul: Twice a Year, No Excuses

Do this in early spring before the riding season starts, and again in late autumn before winter sets in. Set aside two to three hours. This is where you catch the things that monthly checks miss and where you extend the life of your frame and components by years.

Full Strip and Clean

This is not a quick wipe-down. Remove the wheels, seatpost, and bottle cages. If you are comfortable doing it, remove the stem and bars.

Wash the frame with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Pay attention to the areas where grit accumulates: around the bottom bracket shell, behind the fork crown, under the down tube near the head tube junction, and around brake caliper mounts.

For the drivetrain, do a full degrease. Remove the chain (quick links make this trivial) and soak it in degreaser. Scrub the cassette with a brush and degreaser. Clean the chainrings. Clean the derailleur pulleys — they collect more grime than any other part of the drivetrain.

Rinse everything thoroughly. Let it dry completely. Then inspect.

Frame Inspection

With the bike clean and stripped, inspect the frame under good light. You are looking for:

  • Cracks — especially around the head tube, bottom bracket, seat tube junction, and dropout areas. On carbon frames, listen for changes in tap-tone: tap the frame with a coin and listen for dull spots compared to the surrounding area. A dull tap can indicate internal delamination.
  • Paint chips and corrosion — on aluminium frames, corrosion starts at paint chips and spreads underneath. Clean the area, sand lightly, and touch up with frame paint or clear nail polish. On steel frames, any bare metal will rust. Treat it immediately.
  • Cable rub — shift and brake cables running along the frame can wear through paint and into the material over time. Check every point where a cable contacts the frame.
  • Bonded joints — if your frame has bonded aluminium or carbon sections, check for cracks at the bond lines.

Bearing Service

This is the maintenance item most home mechanics skip, and it is the one that causes the most expensive failures when ignored.

Headset bearings. Remove the fork and inspect the bearings. Sealed cartridge bearings should spin freely with no roughness or grinding. If they feel notchy, gritty, or rough, replace them. If they spin smoothly, clean them, regrease the outside, and reassemble.

Bottom bracket bearings. This requires a bottom bracket tool specific to your BB standard — and there are many. Shimano Hollowtech II, SRAM DUB, press-fit BB86, threaded BSA, T47. Know what you have before you buy the tool.

Remove the cranks and the BB. Spin the bearings by hand. Smooth and quiet means they are fine — regrease and reinstall. Rough, crunchy, or loose means replace. BB bearings are cheap (£15-30 for most standards) and the cost of ignoring them is a seized bottom bracket that requires professional extraction.

Wheel hub bearings. With the wheel out of the frame, grip the axle and try to rock it side to side. Any play means the bearings need adjustment (cup-and-cone) or replacement (sealed cartridge). Spin the axle — it should turn freely with no roughness.

Park Tool recommends bearing inspection every 3,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. If you ride in wet conditions regularly — and if you live in the UK or Ireland, you do — cut that interval in half.

Cables and Housing

Shift and brake cables have a finite life. Inner cables fray, corrode, and lose their slick coating. Housing compresses at the ferrules and develops internal corrosion that increases friction.

Replace all inner cables and housing once a year minimum. Twice a year if you ride in wet conditions frequently. New cables transform how a bike shifts and brakes — the difference between old, corroded cables and fresh ones is dramatic.

When routing new cables, apply a thin layer of cable lubricant or light grease to the inner cable before threading it through the housing. This reduces friction and extends the time before cables need replacing again.

Tubeless Sealant

If you are running tubeless, check your sealant every three to four months. Sealant dries out. It coagulates into latex boogers that rattle around inside the tyre doing nothing useful.

Break the bead on one side, look inside. If the sealant is still liquid and present in adequate volume (30-60ml for road tyres, 60-90ml for gravel), reseal and re-inflate. If it has dried out, clean the tyre, strip out the old latex, and add fresh sealant.

Running tubeless with dried-out sealant gives you all the disadvantages of tubeless (harder to fix roadside) with none of the advantages (self-sealing punctures). It is worse than running tubes.

The Tools You Actually Need

Here's the good news: you do not need a professional workshop. You do not need a bike stand (though they are nice). You do not need a £500 tool kit. Here is what handles 90% of everything on this list.

The Essential Kit

A track pump with a pressure gauge. Not a mini pump. A floor pump that reads in psi and bar. Check tyre pressure before every ride. This is not optional.

Hex keys: 4mm, 5mm, 6mm. These three sizes cover roughly 90% of the bolts on a modern road or gravel bike. A multi-tool works for rides, but for home maintenance, get individual L-keys or a ball-end set. The extra leverage matters.

A torque wrench. Carbon components, through-axles, and stem bolts all have specific torque specs. Over-tightening cracks carbon. Under-tightening lets things come loose. A basic beam-type torque wrench costs £20-30. A click-type preset wrench from Park Tool or Topeak costs £50-80 and is faster to use.

A chain checker. The Park Tool CC-3.2 costs about £10 and pays for itself the first time it tells you to replace a chain before it destroys your cassette. Use it monthly.

Tyre levers. Two or three plastic levers. Not metal — metal levers can damage carbon rims and pinch tubes.

Chain lube. One bottle. Apply weekly or after wet rides. Wipe excess. That is the entire protocol.

Chain breaker or quick-link pliers. Most modern chains use quick links, so quick-link pliers are the more practical choice. They make chain removal for cleaning trivial.

The Nice-to-Have Additions

A spoke key. For minor wheel truing. £5-8. Learn the quarter-turn-at-a-time method from Park Tool's guide before touching a wheel.

A cable cutter. If you are replacing your own cables and housing, you need a proper cable cutter. Do not use pliers or wire cutters — they crush the housing and create internal burrs that increase friction.

A bottom bracket tool. Specific to your BB standard. Necessary for seasonal bearing service.

A cassette lockring tool and chain whip. For cassette removal. Needed for deep cleaning and when replacing a worn cassette.

A work stand. Not essential — you can do everything by flipping the bike upside down or leaning it against a wall. But a stand makes every job faster and more comfortable. Park Tool's PCS-10.3 is the workhorse. The Feedback Sports Pro-Ultralight is lighter and folds flat.

Wet-Weather Riders: Adjust Everything Up

If you ride through winter in the UK or Ireland — and most of us do — the schedule above is a baseline. Wet conditions accelerate every form of wear. Chain lube washes off faster. Grit gets driven into bearings. Brake pads wear faster because wet rims and rotors are more abrasive. Cables corrode from the inside out.

Here is what changes for wet-weather riders:

  • Chain lube after every wet ride. Not weekly. Every time you come home with a wet chain. Dry the chain with a rag first, then re-lube. Three minutes.
  • Chain wear checks every 300 miles instead of 500.
  • Brake pad checks fortnightly instead of monthly. Wet conditions can halve pad life.
  • Bearing service every 1,500 miles instead of 3,000.
  • Cable replacement twice a year instead of once. Water gets inside the housing, corrodes the inner cable, and increases friction. You will not see it until you pull the old cable out and find it brown with rust.

None of this is heroic. It is just the reality of riding in a wet climate. If you do not adjust, you will replace more components, spend more money, and have more mechanical failures. The riders who tell you their bike "just works" are the ones doing this maintenance without thinking about it.

The Real Cost of Skipping Maintenance

Let me be really clear about this. Maintenance is not about keeping your bike pretty. It is about keeping it safe and keeping repair costs low.

A chain costs £15-25. A cassette costs £30-80. A chainring set costs £40-100. If you replace the chain on time, you get three or four cassettes out of one chain's worth of wear. If you skip chain checks, you replace the entire drivetrain every time — £85-200 instead of £15-25.

Brake pads cost £10-20 per set. A scored disc rotor costs £30-60. Catch the pads before they are metal-on-metal and you never need to replace a rotor.

Bearing cartridges cost £10-20 each. A seized bottom bracket that has to be drilled out by a professional costs £50-100 in labour alone.

The pattern is the same every time: small, cheap, regular maintenance prevents large, expensive, inconvenient failures. This is not a revelation. But knowing it and doing it are different things.

Building the Habit

The pre-ride check is the keystone. Once you do that consistently, the weekly and monthly checks follow naturally because you start noticing things. You start hearing the chain. Feeling the brake lever. Seeing the tyre cut.

The seasonal overhaul is the only one that requires setting aside dedicated time. Put it in your calendar. Early spring and late autumn. Treat it like a service appointment — because that is exactly what it is, except you are the mechanic and the labour is free.

You do not need to be Craig Geater to keep your bike running well. You need a chain checker, a torque wrench, a track pump, and 60 seconds before each ride. That is the floor. Everything above that is insurance — and it is cheap insurance at that.
