  • I've used most of the power meters on the market at this point, and the Favero Assioma Duo-Shi is the one I keep recommending. Dual-sided, accurate, and at a price point that makes some of the premium options look embarrassing. It's become the benchmark for a reason.
  • Here's the thing I tell every rider who asks me about spending serious money on an SRM — a single-sided Stages and an SRM Origin will give you the same training outcomes over a season. The expensive meter gives you better absolute accuracy, but better accuracy does not mean better results.

That post still holds up. But the market in mid-2026 looks different from even twelve months ago. New models have landed, prices have shifted, and some brands have built up reliability records long enough to actually mean something.

This post is not a rehash. It is a specific, model-by-model breakdown of what is worth buying right now, what is not, and where the real value sits. I am going to cover compatibility traps that catch people out, the used market, marketing features versus coaching-relevant features, and the specific situations where spending more money actually changes your outcomes versus where it is just a more expensive way to get the same data.

If you have never owned a power meter and want the fundamentals first, start with the buying guide. If you already own one and want to know how to use it, read the training guide. This post assumes you know what power is, why it matters, and roughly what type of meter you want. We are getting into specifics.

The 2026 Market: More Options, Better Prices, Same Confusion

Competition has driven prices down and accuracy up. A dual-sided pedal meter that cost $900 in 2019 now costs under $600. A single-sided crank arm unit that was $450 five years ago is $299.

But more choice has not produced more clarity. At least fourteen distinct models from eight manufacturers, plus integrated options from Shimano and SRAM. Every one claims plus or minus one to two per cent accuracy. And almost none of the review sites will tell you which ones have reliability problems, because the review sites got the units free.

Here is the thing nobody tells you: the differences between power meters in 2026 are not primarily about accuracy. Every major manufacturer has solved that to within a range that does not affect your training. The real differences are reliability over time, compatibility with your specific bike, transferability between bikes, and cost of ownership when you factor in batteries, firmware headaches, and warranty support.

The Model-by-Model Breakdown

Let me break this down by what is actually available at retail right now, with real pricing and the context that matters.

Favero Assioma: The Default Recommendation (and Why)

The Favero Assioma line has become the default coaching recommendation for a reason that has nothing to do with marketing spend. It is because the meters work, they are accurate, they are affordable, and they cause fewer headaches than anything else on the market.

Assioma Duo — $479 — dual-sided, Look Keo compatible. Plus or minus one per cent accuracy. Rechargeable battery via USB-C (updated from micro-USB in the 2024 revision). Fifty-hour battery life. This is the meter I recommend to more riders than any other single product. The accuracy has been independently verified by multiple testing protocols. The failure rate, based on community data from thousands of users across forums and Strava clubs, is remarkably low.

Assioma Duo-Shi — $569 — the same internals with Shimano SPD-SL compatibility. This solved the biggest complaint about the original Assioma — that it forced you onto Look Keo cleats. At $569 for dual-sided Shimano SPD-SL measurement, this undercuts the Garmin Rally RS200 by over $400.

Assioma Pro MX — $689 — dual-sided with SPD mountain bike cleat compatibility. If you ride gravel or MTB and want power data, this is one of only two real options (the other being Garmin Rally XC).

The Assioma line's one genuine weakness is that the pedal body itself is not the most refined platform for riders who demand a very specific stack height or Q-factor. If you have been professionally fitted and your fitter has strong opinions about pedal interface, check the specs before committing. For the other 95 per cent of riders, they are fine.

Garmin Rally: Clever Engineering, Mixed Execution

Garmin's modular approach — sensing pods that stay constant while you swap pedal bodies between Look, SPD-SL, and SPD — is clever engineering. The execution has been uneven.

Rally RS200 / RK200 / XC200 (all dual-sided) — $999 across all cleat variants.

Accuracy is solid at plus or minus one to one and a half per cent. The problem is reliability. Rally pedals have generated more warranty claims per unit than any other major power meter. Two issues: spindle cracking under normal loads (particularly first-gen XC units — Garmin updated the material but has not fully eliminated it), and ANT+ connectivity drops during hard efforts that create gaps in your data file. Firmware updates have reduced frequency, but I still hear reports from riders in the Skool community about intermittent drops.

At $999 — nearly double the Favero Assioma Duo-Shi — the Rally needs to be meaningfully better to justify the price. It is not, unless you actually need to swap between SPD and SPD-SL on different bikes. The modular pod system handles that elegantly. If you are staying in one cleat system, the Assioma is the better buy.

Stages: The Budget King With Caveats

Stages Gen 3 (single-sided) — $299-$349 depending on crankset. Plus or minus 1.5 per cent accuracy. CR2032, roughly 200 hours. Stages LR (dual-sided) — $599-$699.

A Gen 3 at $299 is hard to argue against for a first power meter. It gets you real data, real zones, and real fitness tracking. The accuracy question misses the point — your FTP test and your training zones all come from the same meter, so the system is internally consistent regardless of absolute accuracy.

The caveat is water ingress. Gen 3 units had a documented problem with moisture getting past the seals and corrupting electronics. Later production runs and the Gen 4 housing address this. If buying used or new old stock, check the manufacturing date — early 2023 and prior batches are most affected. Stages will warranty affected units, but know what you are buying.

Shimano Integrated Cranksets: Seamless but Locked In

R8100-P (Ultegra, dual-sided) — $699. R9200-P (Dura-Ace, dual-sided) — $1,399.

The R8100-P is the one to watch. Dual-sided, integrated, no separate unit to charge or maintain, plus or minus two per cent accuracy. At $699, it costs $130 more than the Favero Assioma Duo-Shi — but you get seamless integration and a crankset you were probably going to buy anyway if you are building up a Shimano bike.

The downside is total lock-in. Switch to SRAM, your power meter goes in the parts bin. Want power on a second bike? Buy a whole second crankset. The Assioma pedals move between bikes in five minutes. The R9200-P at $1,399 only makes sense if you were already buying Dura-Ace — it is an expensive way to measure watts otherwise.

Quarq DZero and SRAM AXS Power Meter: The SRAM Ecosystem Answer

Quarq has been making spider-based power meters since 2008. Their track record for reliability is second only to SRM, and their units have consistently tested at plus or minus 1.5 per cent accuracy across independent protocols.

Quarq DZero DUB — $699. SRAM AXS Power Meter Spider — $549-$699 depending on configuration.

For SRAM groupset riders, these are the natural choice. They bolt onto your existing SRAM crank arms and measure power at the spider — total power, not estimated from one side. The DUB bottom bracket system gives reasonable compatibility across most frame standards, though "reasonable" still means checking whether your frame uses BSA, PF30, BB30, or T47 and buying the right adapter.

The SRAM AXS Power Meter Spider at $549 is a notable entry. It gives you dual-sided total power measurement (not left-right individual, but total through the spider) at a price point that sits between single-sided crank arms and premium options. If you are already in the SRAM ecosystem, this is the sweet spot.

SRM: Still the Gold Standard, Still the Gold Price

SRM Origin — starting at $1,599. Plus or minus one per cent accuracy. Built like an industrial instrument. Used by more WorldTour teams than any other manufacturer for over three decades.

Is it twice as good as a Favero Assioma Duo? No. Is it measurably better for day-to-day training? Also no. What SRM gives you is the absolute highest ceiling of accuracy and durability — a meter that will give you lab-grade readings for ten or more years without degradation. If you are a professional, if you supply data to a sports science lab, or if you just want the best regardless of price, SRM is the answer. For everyone else, it is a premium you are paying for engineering heritage and peace of mind rather than meaningfully better training outcomes.

4iiii Precision: The Quiet Competitor

4iiii Precision 3 (single-sided) — $299. 4iiii Precision 3+ (dual-sided) — $499.

4iiii does not generate the same buzz as Favero or Garmin, but their meters are very good. The Precision 3+ dual-sided at $499 is actually the cheapest dual-sided power meter on the market in 2026 — $80 less than the Favero Assioma Duo. The accuracy is plus or minus 1.5 per cent, and the reliability record is solid.

The trade-off is that it is a crank-arm meter, so you need to match it to your specific crankset model and generation. 4iiii sells both factory-installed units (buy the crank arm with the gauges already bonded) and a send-in service where they retrofit your existing cranks. The factory units are the safer bet — the bonding process is precisely controlled in their facility.

When Cheap Is Genuinely as Good as Expensive

A $299 Stages Gen 3 and a $1,599 SRM Origin will give you functionally identical training outcomes over a season, assuming you use them consistently and test your FTP on the same meter you train with. The SRM gives you a number closer to what a lab ergometer reads. The Stages might be three to five per cent different. But you are not training in a lab — you are on the road, with temperature, wind, gradient, and a body that fluctuates by more than three per cent based on sleep and stress. The accuracy difference disappears into real-world noise.

Here is where expensive actually matters:

Time trials. A two per cent power error translates to 15-20 seconds over 40 kilometres at amateur speeds. Dual-sided accuracy matters when the margin is that thin.

Multiple bikes with different meters. If you train on one meter and race on another, the offset between them needs to be small. Two plus-or-minus-two-per-cent meters can read four per cent apart — at a 280-watt FTP, that is 11 watts and enough to ruin your pacing.

For everyone else — the vast majority of masters riders training to get faster and race local events — the $299 unit does the job.

The Used Market: Where the Real Value Hides

Upgrade cycles in cycling are fast. When a rider switches groupsets, their perfectly functional power meter becomes incompatible. It goes on eBay or the team WhatsApp group for 40 to 60 per cent of retail.

Best used buys:

Quarq DZero — ages extremely well. The construction is solid, and a five-year-old DZero reads within spec. Used at $300-$400, outstanding value.

Favero Assioma Duo (original Look Keo) — the 2024 revision added USB-C, but the originals are functionally identical in measurement. Used pairs at $280-$350 give you dual-sided accuracy for less than a new single-sided meter.

Garmin Vector 3 — the Rally predecessor. Early units had battery contact issues resolved by a redesigned cap ($15 replacement). With the updated cap, solid meters at $250-$350.

What to avoid used:

Any Stages you cannot verify the manufacturing date on. Early Gen 3 water ingress issues mean they work fine until a wet ride, then produce corrupted data.

Any meter without a recent ride file. Ask the seller for a .FIT file. Open it in intervals.icu and look for dropout patterns — zero-watt spikes, data gaps, or power that does not respond to gradient changes. These signal failing strain gauge bonds.

Hub-based meters unless you want a dedicated indoor wheel. PowerTap hubs still work but parts are drying up.

Compatibility Traps That Nobody Warns You About

Power meter compatibility is not as simple as "buy it and bolt it on." Here are the traps that catch people out.

Crank length. Crank-arm meters must match your bike's crank length — 170mm, 172.5mm, or 175mm. Sounds obvious, catches people buying used left crank arms without checking.

Bottom bracket standards. Spider-based meters need a compatible BB shell. BSA, PF30, BB30, T47, BB86 — your frame uses one of these, and the meter must match. SRAM's DUB system works across most standards with adapter cups, but "most" is doing heavy lifting. Check before you buy.

Cleat system lock-in. Pedal-based meters mean choosing a cleat system. Favero Assioma Duo locks you into Look Keo. Duo-Shi locks you into SPD-SL. Switching from Speedplay to Assioma means new cleats at minimum, potentially new shoes. Factor that cost in.

Cross-threading. If you cross-thread a $500 pedal meter into a crank arm, you destroy both sets of threads. Right pedal is right-hand thread, left is left-hand. Thread in by hand first. Always.

ANT+ versus Bluetooth pairing conflicts. Every modern meter broadcasts on both, but head units pair differently — Wahoo defaults to Bluetooth, Garmin to ANT+. If you use a smart trainer for indoor riding, you may need to pair via a different protocol. This creates phantom dropout issues that look like hardware faults but are software conflicts.

Features the Marketing Department Invented

Every power meter above $400 comes with a feature list beyond basic power measurement: Cycling Dynamics, Torque Effectiveness, Pedal Smoothness, Power Phase, Platform Centre Offset. These exist because manufacturers need to differentiate on spec sheets once the core accuracy numbers converge.

Here is my position: as a coach, I use none of them for training prescription. Not one.

Torque Effectiveness and Pedal Smoothness imply you should train for a smoother pedal stroke. Decades of research say otherwise — deliberately altering pedalling technique to reduce dead spots either makes no measurable difference or actively increases metabolic cost. Your body self-selects the most efficient pattern. Trying to override that works against your own neuromuscular system.

Power Phase tells you where in the rotation power is applied. Interesting for biomechanics labs. No coach prescribes intervals based on power phase angles.

Left-right balance is the one advanced metric with genuine coaching utility. It flags asymmetries from injury compensation or bike fit issues. But the goal is not 50/50 — it is monitoring for sudden changes that suggest something has gone wrong.

What coaches actually use: watts, cadence, left-right balance (if available). That is the list. If a manufacturer leads with Cycling Dynamics and buries reliability data, that tells you something about their priorities.

Calibration: What Actually Matters

Zero-offset before every ride. Ten seconds. Head unit sensor menu, select power meter, press calibrate. This resets the baseline and eliminates temperature drift. I do it every ride. It is free accuracy.

Static weight calibration — hanging a known weight from the crank to verify accuracy — was useful ten years ago. In 2026, if your zero-offset reads consistently and your numbers track with perceived effort, the meter is working. If you suspect it is not, send it back under warranty.

Automatic temperature compensation works on every modern meter, but none of them are perfect. The manual zero-offset catches the residual drift that auto-compensation misses. Belt and braces. Do both.

The Decision Framework

Here is how I would think about this if I were buying a power meter today.

First power meter, budget matters: 4iiii Precision 3 or Stages Gen 3. Single-sided, $299, gets you in the door. Use it for a season. If power training sticks — and it will — upgrade later with full knowledge of what you want from a meter.

Best value, no compromises on data: Favero Assioma Duo ($479) or Assioma Duo-Shi ($569). Dual-sided, accurate, portable between bikes, rechargeable. If I could only recommend one power meter to every rider reading this, it would be one of these two depending on your cleat preference.

Already in the Shimano ecosystem, want clean integration: Shimano R8100-P Ultegra crankset at $699. Accept the lock-in, enjoy the seamlessness.

Already in the SRAM ecosystem: SRAM AXS Power Meter Spider at $549 or Quarq DZero at $699. Proven reliability, reasonable price, total power measurement.

Money is not the constraint, accuracy is: SRM Origin. You will not get better data from anything else. Whether that better data produces better race results depends entirely on how you use it, not on the meter itself.

Used market value pick: Previous-generation Quarq DZero at $300-$400 or used Favero Assioma Duo at $280-$350. Verify function, check for data dropouts in a ride file, and you have a top-tier meter for entry-level money.

What Actually Makes You Faster

I want to finish with this, because it is easy to lose the plot when you are comparing spec sheets and reading forum threads about plus or minus half a per cent accuracy differences.

The power meter that makes you faster is the one you use on every ride to execute structured training consistently. A $299 Stages used six days a week with a proper training plan will produce better results than a $1,599 SRM that sits on a bike you ride twice a week when the weather is nice. This is not motivational waffle. It is a mathematical certainty — training load drives adaptation, and training load requires data, and data requires a meter that is on the bike you actually ride.

If you are agonising over which meter to buy, you have already spent more time thinking about it than the decision deserves. Pick one in your budget, bolt it on, test your FTP, set your training zones, and start riding with numbers. The first three months of structured power-based training will teach you more about what you need from a meter than any review article — including this one.

The data matters. The specific box it comes from matters far less than people think.

Is a $300 power meter accurate enough for serious training?
Yes. A single-sided unit like the Stages Gen 3 or 4iiii Precision typically reads within plus or minus 1.5 to 2 per cent of a lab-grade meter. More importantly, it is consistent — if it reads 2 per cent high today, it reads 2 per cent high next month. Since your FTP test and all your zones are derived from the same meter, the internal consistency is perfect. You train at the right intensity even if the number on your screen is slightly different from what an SRM would show. The only scenario where a $300 meter will actually limit you is if you race with a different meter than you train with and need absolute accuracy for pacing.
Should I buy a used power meter?
It depends on the type. Pedal-based meters like the Favero Assioma or Garmin Rally are good used buys because you can verify function immediately — pair them, spin the cranks, check the readings. Crank-arm units from Stages and 4iiii are riskier because strain gauge bond degradation is invisible and causes intermittent data spikes that only show up under hard efforts. Spider-based meters from Quarq and SRM tend to age well because the construction is more durable. Always ask for a recent ride file so you can check for dropout patterns, and insist on a return window. A three-year-old Quarq DZero at 50 per cent of retail is often a better buy than a brand-new budget single-sided unit.
Do I need dual-sided power for training?
For most training purposes, no. Single-sided meters double your left leg reading, which introduces a consistent offset from your true total power. But that offset is baked into your FTP test and therefore into all your training zones. Your intervals are still at the right physiological intensity. Dual-sided becomes meaningfully better in three scenarios: pacing time trials where absolute watts determine your target speed, tracking rehabilitation from a leg injury where left-right balance changes over time, and comparing data with a coach or other riders who use different meter brands.
Which power meter has the best reliability track record?
SRM and Quarq have the longest and most consistent reliability records, with some SRM units lasting over a decade in professional team service. Favero Assioma has been on the market since 2017 and has built an excellent reputation with very low failure rates. Shimano's integrated crankset meters are too new for long-term reliability data but early reports are positive. Stages Gen 3 units had well-documented water ingress issues that Stages addressed in later production runs but that still affect used and early-batch units. Garmin Rally pedals have had more warranty claims than competitors, primarily around spindle cracking and ANT+ connectivity drops, though Garmin's warranty service is responsive.
What features on a power meter do coaches actually use?
Power output in watts, cadence, and left-right balance (if dual-sided). That is the list. Features like Cycling Dynamics, Torque Effectiveness, Pedal Smoothness, Power Phase, and Platform Centre Offset are marketed heavily but used by almost nobody in a coaching context.
