RACING AND RIDING IN THE RAIN: THE TECHNICAL GUIDE TO WET CONDITIONS

  • I love a wet race day because half the field has already conceded before the start. They are still pedalling but mentally they have checked out. If you understand the physics, you pick up places without producing a single extra watt.
  • Drop your tyre pressure 5 to 10 PSI. It takes 30 seconds with a track pump and it is the single biggest mechanical advantage you have in the wet. I am amazed how many riders do not bother.
  • You cannot think your way to confidence on wet roads — you have to ride your way there. I make a point of going out on wet days in training so the feel of reduced grip is familiar, not frightening.

Watch a wet road race from the side of the road and you will see something remarkable happen within the first 20 minutes. Half the field shrinks. Not physically — they are still pedalling, still turning the cranks — but mentally, they have already conceded. They sit further back. They brake earlier than they need to. They leave gaps through corners that a dry-weather version of themselves would never tolerate. And the riders who understand wet conditions pick up those places without producing a single extra watt.

Rain does not make racing harder in the way most people think. It does not reduce your power output, shorten your endurance, or change the gradient of the hills. What it does is change the interface between your tyres and the road — and everything else flows from that single fact. The grip equation changes. Braking distances increase. Certain surfaces that were fine when dry become close to frictionless. If you understand those changes and adjust for them, you are racing the same race on a modified surface. If you do not understand them, you are racing scared, and scared riders do not win bike races.

Here is what you actually need to know.

Tyre Pressure: The Single Most Impactful Adjustment

If you change nothing else about how you ride in the rain, change your tyre pressure. It is the largest mechanical advantage available to you in wet conditions, and it requires nothing more than a track pump and 30 seconds before the start.

The principle is simple. Lower pressure means the tyre deforms more where it contacts the road, creating a wider and longer contact patch. That larger patch means more rubber molecules in contact with the tarmac at any given moment, which directly increases grip. In dry conditions, the trade-off is not worth it — you gain marginal grip at the cost of rolling resistance. In wet conditions, the grip benefit is significant and the rolling resistance cost is almost irrelevant because road spray and water resistance are already slowing everything down.

Drop 5 to 10 PSI from your dry-weather setting. For a 75 kg rider on 25mm tyres, that typically means running 75 to 80 PSI instead of the usual 85 to 90 PSI. If you are on 28mm tyres — which are a better choice for wet racing if your frame clears them — you can go lower still, down to around 65 to 70 PSI.

Silca's tyre pressure research, which Josh Poertner has discussed extensively, confirms what experienced wet-weather racers have known for years: the rolling resistance penalty of dropping 10 PSI is roughly 1 to 2 watts on a smooth surface. The grip benefit, measured in terms of the friction coefficient between rubber and wet tarmac, is substantial. You are trading an undetectable power cost for a measurable reduction in your likelihood of losing the front end through a corner. That is not a difficult decision.

One caveat. Do not go so low that you risk pinch flats on clinchers or the tyre rolling off the rim on tubulars. There is a floor, and it varies by tyre width, rim width, and rider weight. Use the tyre pressure calculator to find your specific number rather than guessing.

Cornering: Keep the Bike Upright, Steer With Your Body

Cornering in the dry is largely about lean angle. You tip the bike into the corner, the tyre's round profile bites at an angle, and the centripetal force keeps you tracking through the turn. In the rain, that same lean angle that felt secure at 35 kph in the dry can send you sliding across the tarmac, because the friction coefficient between rubber and wet road is roughly 30 to 40 per cent lower than in the dry. Less available grip means less available lean.

The adjustment is counterintuitive for riders who corner well in dry conditions. You need to keep the bike more upright than feels natural and steer more with your body weight than with frame lean.

In practice, this means a few specific things.

Weight the outside pedal aggressively. Your outside foot should be at six o'clock with real force through it — not just resting, but actively pressing. This drives the tyre into the road surface, maximising the contact pressure where you need it most.

Shift your body weight, not the bike. Rather than leaning the entire bicycle into the corner, keep the frame relatively upright and move your body to the inside. Your hips shift, your inside shoulder drops slightly, and the bike tracks through the turn with a shallower lean angle. This keeps more of the tyre's flat centre tread in contact with the road instead of rolling onto the side wall, where the tread pattern may be thinner and the contact patch smaller.

Smooth inputs above everything. This is the wet-weather commandment. No sudden steering movements. No abrupt weight shifts. No snapping the handlebars mid-corner. Every input to the bike should be gradual, progressive, and predictable. Traction in the rain is a budget — you have a fixed amount available, and any sudden demand can exceed it instantly. Smooth steering uses that budget gradually. Jerky inputs blow through it in a single moment.

Enter slower, apex later, exit straighter. Adjust your line through corners. Come in a fraction slower than you would in the dry, clip the apex a metre later than usual, and straighten the bike earlier on exit so you are applying power with the bike upright rather than leaned over. Braking: Earlier, Progressive, Never in a Corner

Rim brakes on a wet aluminium surface are roughly 40 per cent less effective than in the dry for the first revolution of the wheel. The brake pads need to clear the film of water from the braking surface before they generate meaningful friction. Disc brakes are significantly better in the wet — the rotor sits inboard, away from the worst of the road spray — but they are still not as effective as they are in dry conditions.

The practical result is this: your braking zone needs to start earlier, and your brake application needs to be progressive rather than sudden.

Start braking 30 to 40 per cent earlier than in the dry. If your normal braking marker for a corner is a drain cover or a lamppost, your wet-weather marker is several bike lengths before it. This is not cautious riding — it is accurate riding. You are accounting for the reduced friction coefficient, not riding scared.

Use both brakes together, front-biased. The front brake does the majority of your stopping work — roughly 70 per cent in normal conditions. In the wet, you still want to be front-brake dominant, but feather the rear brake on simultaneously to distribute the braking load. If you grab a handful of front brake on a wet road, the front tyre can lose traction before the brake pads have cleared the water film, and a front-wheel washout at speed gives you almost no time to react.

Progressive squeeze, not a grab. Start light, build pressure gradually, and modulate. Think of it as a ramp rather than an on-off switch. This gives the brake pads time to clear water, gives the tyre time to reach its grip limit gradually rather than exceeding it suddenly, and gives you feedback through the levers about how much traction is available. If you feel the wheel start to lock, you have time to release slightly. If you grabbed hard, the wheel is already sliding.

Never brake in a corner. This applies in the dry too, but in the rain it is non-negotiable. When the bike is leaned over, the tyre is already using a significant portion of its available traction for cornering forces. Adding braking forces on top can push the total demand past what the tyre can provide, and the result is a lowside crash. All your braking should happen before you tip the bike into the turn. If you entered too fast, you are better off staying off the brakes and running slightly wide on the exit than grabbing a lever mid-corner.

Dangerous Surfaces: What Will Put You on the Ground

Dry tarmac has a friction coefficient against rubber of roughly 0.7 to 0.8. Wet tarmac drops to about 0.4 to 0.5. But certain surfaces drop far below even that, and learning to identify them at speed is one of the most important wet-weather skills you can develop.

Painted road markings. White lines, junction boxes, cycle lane markings, pedestrian crossing stripes — all of them become near-zero grip when wet. The paint fills the micro-texture of the tarmac that creates friction, leaving a smooth surface that water sits on top of. Treat every painted marking as an ice rink. Do not brake on them, do not corner on them, do not change direction while your tyres are on them. Plan your line through junctions and roundabouts to avoid them entirely.

Manhole covers and metal drain grates. Metal and wet rubber is one of the lowest-friction combinations you will encounter on a road. A front wheel hitting a wet manhole cover mid-corner is outright dangerous — the wheel can skip sideways with almost no warning. In a race, scan ahead for metal surfaces and adjust your line. In a bunch, this gets harder because you cannot always choose your line, which is why positioning matters even more in the wet.

Diesel and oil. Vehicles drip oil and diesel onto the road constantly, and in dry weather it bonds to the tarmac surface. The first 20 to 30 minutes of rain lifts these hydrocarbons and floats them on the water film before eventually washing them away. This is why the first rain after a dry spell is the most dangerous — the road surface is at its slipperiest. Look for rainbow sheens on the road surface, particularly on roundabouts, at traffic lights, and at bus stops where heavy vehicles idle. Avoid them.

Wet leaves. Autumn racing in the UK and Ireland means leaf litter on the roads, and wet leaves on tarmac are treacherous — the friction coefficient drops to something close to wet ice. Corners that pass under tree cover deserve particular respect. A single leaf under your front tyre mid-corner can be enough to break traction.

Expansion joints and railway crossings. Metal strips in the road surface, whether expansion joints on bridges or railway crossings, are slippery in the wet and can deflect a tyre if crossed at a shallow angle. Cross them as close to perpendicular as possible, keep the bike upright, and do not brake while your wheel is in contact with them.

Kit That Actually Works

Here is what nobody tells you about racing in the rain: the right kit does not keep you dry. Nothing keeps you dry in sustained rain at racing speed. What the right kit does is keep you warm, functional, and able to see. The distinction matters, because riders who chase dryness end up in heavy waterproof jackets that trap sweat, overheat, and leave them more miserable than riders who accepted they were going to get wet and dressed to manage the consequences.

A gabba-style jersey or thin rain gilet. The Castelli Gabba changed wet-weather racing when it appeared because it understood the actual problem — not water from outside, but wind chill. A water-resistant, wind-blocking jersey keeps your core temperature stable without creating a sauna. If your race allows gilets, a thin, packable rain gilet over a normal jersey is a lighter alternative. The key is wind protection, not waterproofing.

Neoprene overshoes. Your feet will get wet. Accept that now. What neoprene overshoes do is keep them warm while wet, which is the difference between feet that still function after two hours and feet that have gone numb and cannot feel the pedals. Numb feet mean poor pedalling technique, poor bike handling, and a miserable final hour. Spend the money on overshoes before you spend it on a rain jacket.

A cycling cap under the helmet. A thin cap with a peak stops rain running directly into your eyes, which is surprisingly debilitating at speed. Without a cap, rain hits the helmet, channels down to your forehead, and streams into your eyes continuously. With one, the peak deflects water away from your face. It is a negligible weight and bulk penalty for a significant visibility benefit.

Clear or light-tinted glasses. Dark lenses in the rain are a liability. Light conditions are already reduced, and dark tint makes it worse. Switch to clear lenses, or if spray from the rider ahead is a problem, light yellow or rose tint. Some riders remove glasses entirely in heavy rain, but road spray from a bunch contains grit that can damage your eyes, so I would keep them on with a clear lens. Anti-fog treatments help, though none of them are perfect.

What not to wear. A heavy waterproof jacket. It will keep the rain out for 30 minutes and then you will be swimming in your own sweat, overheating, and unable to regulate temperature. The only exception is a very long race in cold rain where hypothermia is a genuine risk — and in that scenario, you want a thin waterproof shell, not a mountaineering jacket.

Visibility: Being Seen and Seeing

Rain reduces visibility for everyone — you, the other riders, the race convoy, and the commissaires. This matters for safety and for tactics.

Lights. A rear blinker is not mandatory in most road races, but in many sportives and some lower-category races, it is allowed and it is sensible. A bright rear LED in flash mode makes you visible to following traffic and to the riders behind you, which reduces the risk of being rear-ended in low-visibility conditions. Check the race rules before you start — some events prohibit lights, but most that permit them will note it in the technical guide.

Positioning in the bunch. In the rain, the riders behind the front row are dealing with a constant face-full of road spray from the wheels ahead. The further back you are, the more spray you are eating, the worse your visibility, and the less warning you get about hazards — potholes, manhole covers, debris — because the riders ahead cannot always signal them in a fast-moving bunch. This is another reason to ride in the front third. Not just to avoid the accordion effect through corners, but because you can actually see the road surface ahead.

High-visibility kit. If you have a choice, do not wear all black in the rain. A light-coloured jersey or gilet with reflective elements is not about fashion — it is about the commissaire car being able to see you when spray reduces visibility to 30 metres. Some teams choose white or bright-coloured rain kit specifically for this reason.

The Mental Game: Recalibrate, Do Not Ignore

The worst advice you can get about racing in the rain is to ignore the conditions and ride as if it were dry. That gets people hurt. The best wet-weather riders do not ignore the conditions — they recalibrate.

Recalibrating means acknowledging that the risk profile has changed and adjusting accordingly, while recognising that most of the field has over-adjusted. The gap between riding safely in the rain and riding scared in the rain is enormous, and it is almost entirely mental.

Here is what the good wet-weather riders understand. When the rain starts, most riders instinctively add a large safety margin to everything — they brake 50 per cent earlier rather than 35 per cent, they reduce their cornering speed by 20 per cent rather than 10, they open gaps in the bunch that turn into three or four bike lengths. Each of those individual margins is larger than the physics requires. Collectively, they add up to a massive speed deficit that creates opportunities for riders who have calibrated their margins accurately.

You do not gain places in the rain by taking risks. You gain places by being precise. The rider who drops their tyre pressure correctly, brakes at the right point rather than too early, and takes corners at 90 per cent of dry-weather speed rather than 70 per cent is going to move through the field without ever doing anything that looks aggressive. That is what wet-weather racing rewards — technical accuracy, not bravery.

The mental trick is simple. Tell yourself: the conditions are the same for everyone, and I have prepared for them specifically. That is not a motivational platitude. If you have lowered your tyre pressure, practised your wet-weather cornering, and pre-identified the dangerous surfaces on the course, you are better prepared than the rider who just showed up and hoped it would stop raining. Confidence built on preparation is real confidence, and it is visible in how you handle the bike.

Practising in Training: You Cannot Fake It

You cannot read an article about wet-weather riding and expect to feel comfortable the next time it rains in a race. Confidence on wet roads comes from hours spent on wet roads, and there is no shortcut.

The next time you look out the window and see rain, go for a ride. Not a short one — a proper two-hour ride on roads with corners, descents, and varied surfaces. Practise your cornering on wet roads at training speeds. Feel what the reduced grip is like on a painted white line. Brake progressively into a familiar corner and notice how much earlier you need to start. Get to know what a wet manhole cover feels like under your tyres.

Do this five or six times and something shifts. The unfamiliarity disappears. Wet roads stop being an unknown variable and become a known one. You learn that the tyre will grip far more than your anxiety suggested it would, as long as you are smooth with your inputs. You develop a feel for the threshold between grip and slip that no amount of reading can replicate.

The riders who corner well in the rain did not learn that skill in the rain on race day. They learned it on training rides where the consequences of getting it wrong were a low-speed slide into a grass verge rather than a high-speed crash into a barrier. Give yourself those hours. They are worth more than any amount of interval training when race day turns wet.

Race Tactics in the Rain

Everything above is about technique and equipment. But wet racing also changes the tactical picture, and the riders who recognise those changes can use them.

Positioning matters even more. In the dry, you can survive at 25th wheel and still contest the sprint. In the rain, the spray, the reduced visibility, and the amplified accordion effect through corners make positions behind 15th wheel significantly harder to hold. Fight for front-third position and defend it more aggressively than you would in the dry. The energy cost of being in the front third is lower than the accumulated cost of the surges you will need in the back.

Descents are where races split. Good descenders gain time in the dry. In the rain, they gain significantly more, because the less confident riders brake much earlier and corner much slower. If you are a competent wet-weather descender — and you will know this from your training rides — descents are your opportunity. Not by taking stupid risks, but by maintaining speed where others are losing it. The time gaps that open up on a wet descent take laps to close on flat roads.

Attacks work differently. A dry-weather attack on a flat road is hard to make stick because the bunch can organise a chase with the benefit of the draft. In the rain, the bunch is less willing to commit to a full-effort chase because high-speed bunch riding in poor visibility feels dangerous. Riders are less likely to pull through aggressively at the front of a chase, less likely to close small gaps, and more likely to let a move of two or three riders gain a dangerous advantage. If you are going to attack, a wet road is a favourable moment — particularly when combined with a technical section where the bunch will be strung out and reluctant to accelerate.

Watch for crashes ahead. This sounds obvious, but in the rain the crash rate goes up and your ability to see the crash happening goes down. Ride with your hands near the brakes, particularly in the first three laps before the field has settled into a rhythm and the most nervous riders have self-selected to the back. If a crash happens ahead, having your hands on the hoods rather than in the drops gives you more control to steer around it.

Feed stations and bottle handups. Wet bar tape and wet bottles make fumbled handups far more likely. If the race has a feed zone, approach it deliberately and grip the bottle firmly. A dropped bottle in the rain is annoying; a dropped bottle that rolls under someone's wheel is dangerous.

Before the Start Line

A quick checklist for wet race morning.

Lower your tyre pressure — 5 to 10 PSI below your dry setting. Put on your neoprene overshoes, cap, and clear glasses. Apply anti-fog to the lenses. If you are running rim brakes, do a few hard brake applications during the warm-up to scuff the pads and check that braking feels responsive. Check that your rear light has battery if you are using one. Tighten your shoes an extra notch — wet shoes stretch and a loose shoe on a wet pedal is a recipe for a foot coming unclipped at the worst possible moment.

And then ride the race. Not a different race. The same race, on a wet road, with accurate adjustments and the knowledge that you are better prepared than most of the field.

The rain is not your enemy. The rain is a filter. It removes the riders who did not prepare, it exposes the riders who do not understand their equipment, and it rewards the riders who stayed technical when everyone else got emotional. Be in the last group.
