  • Nobody teaches you how to ride in traffic. You just clip in, hope for the best, and learn through near-misses. This piece is the briefing I wish I had been given before my first road ride.

  • A front and rear camera is not paranoia. It is evidence, and it is the thing that makes a police report worth filing after a close pass.

Most cyclists learn to ride in traffic the hard way. A close pass at 50mph on a country road. A left hook at a junction you thought was safe. A roundabout where every lane felt like a death sentence. You survive, you adjust, and eventually you develop an instinct for what works — but nobody should have to learn road positioning through near misses.

The problem starts with the advice most new riders get: stay left, stay out of the way, make yourself small. It sounds logical. It is also the most dangerous thing you can do on a bike, because riding in the gutter does not make you safe. It makes you invisible. And invisible cyclists are the ones who get hit.

This is a guide to riding in traffic with confidence, authority, and — critically — a sound legal and practical basis for everything you do. Not aggression. Not timidity. Assertive positioning that keeps you visible, predictable, and alive.

Road Positioning: Primary and Secondary

Every road position decision you make on a bike comes down to two options: primary and secondary.

Primary position is the centre of the lane you are travelling in. Not the centre of the road — the centre of your lane. This is where you ride when you need to be seen, when the road is too narrow for a vehicle to safely overtake, when you are approaching a junction, or when there is any reason a driver might try to squeeze past without giving you enough room.

Secondary position is roughly one metre from the kerb edge. This is where you ride on wider roads with good visibility, clear sightlines, and enough width for vehicles to pass you safely without crossing the centre line.

Most riders default to secondary all the time. Hugging the kerb. Trying not to inconvenience anyone. And that instinct — the desire to be polite, to stay out of the way — is what puts them in danger.

Why Riding Left Is More Dangerous

When you ride in the gutter, three things happen. First, you invite close passes. A driver approaching from behind sees what looks like enough room to pass without moving into the opposite lane. They squeeze through with inches to spare, often at full speed, because from their perspective they did not need to change course. If you had been in primary position, that same driver would have had to make a conscious decision to overtake — checking the opposite lane, waiting for a gap, pulling out fully. That conscious decision is what keeps you safe.

Second, you become invisible at junctions. A car waiting to pull out of a side road is looking for traffic in the middle of the lane. If you are tucked into the kerb, you are outside their scan zone. They look, they see nothing in the lane, they pull out. You were there the whole time. They just did not register you.

Third, you have nowhere to go when things go wrong. If a car passes too close and you are already at the kerb edge, your only escape route is the gutter, the drain cover, or the pavement. If you are in primary position and a car passes too close, you can move left to create space. Gutter riding removes your margin for error.

When to Move Between Positions

The skill is knowing when to be in primary and when to drop to secondary. There is no single rule, but the pattern is consistent.

Move to primary when:

  • Approaching any junction, roundabout, or traffic island
  • The road narrows or there are parked cars ahead
  • You are in a line of traffic and vehicles cannot safely overtake
  • Approaching a pinch point, bollard, or traffic-calming measure
  • You are turning right

Drop to secondary when:

  • The road is wide enough for vehicles to pass safely
  • Visibility is good in both directions
  • There are no junctions, hazards, or parked cars ahead
  • You are on a long, straight road with light traffic

The transition between positions should be smooth and deliberate. Signal your intent with a glance over your shoulder. Drivers respond to confidence and predictability. Hesitation — drifting between positions, wobbling into primary and then nervously pulling left again — confuses everyone.

Junctions: Where the Danger Lives

Over 75 percent of cyclist-vehicle collisions in the UK happen at or near junctions. That figure alone should change how you approach every intersection, roundabout, and side road on your ride.

Approaching Junctions

Move to primary position well before the junction — at least 50 metres. Make yourself visible in the centre of the lane. Check behind you, signal if necessary, and hold your line. Drivers approaching from behind need time to recognise your position and adjust. If you wait until the last moment to move out, you create exactly the kind of surprise that causes incidents.

At traffic lights, position yourself in the centre of the lane or use the Advanced Stop Line (the green box at the front of the queue) if one is available. Do not filter up the inside of large vehicles — HGVs and buses have massive blind spots on their left side, and the left hook at traffic lights is one of the most common fatal collision types for cyclists in urban areas.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts terrify a lot of cyclists, and with reason. Multi-lane roundabouts with fast-moving traffic are difficult — no point pretending otherwise. But the principles are simple even if the execution takes practice.

Single-lane roundabouts: Take primary position. Enter the roundabout when there is a safe gap. Stay in the centre of the lane throughout. Signal left as you approach your exit. Drivers behind you should treat you exactly as they would a slow-moving car.

Multi-lane roundabouts: Choose the correct lane before you enter. For exits in the first half (left or straight on), use the left lane. For exits in the second half (right or full circle), use the right lane. Take primary position within your chosen lane. Mirror, signal, position — the same sequence a driver uses, because you have the same rights and the same responsibilities.

If a multi-lane roundabout feels properly unsafe — and some of them are, poorly designed with high-speed traffic and no cycling provision — there is no shame in dismounting and using the pedestrian crossings. Getting home matters more than maintaining your dignity.

T-Junctions and Side Roads

When riding past a side road, watch for vehicles waiting to emerge. Make eye contact with the driver if you can. If they are looking at you, you exist in their awareness. If they are looking past you or at their phone, assume they will pull out.

The most dangerous situation is a vehicle approaching from behind and turning left across your path at a side road — the classic left hook. Primary position helps because it puts you directly in the turning driver's sightline, but nothing replaces awareness. If you hear a vehicle accelerating behind you as you approach a left-turn junction, be ready.

Right Turns on Busy Roads

Right turns are the manoeuvre that makes experienced cyclists nervous, and rightly so. You are moving across traffic, exposing yourself to vehicles from multiple directions, and you need to judge gaps in oncoming traffic while holding position in the middle of the road.

The sequence: look, signal, look, manoeuvre.

  1. Check behind you with a shoulder check. You need to know what is behind you before you move.
  2. Signal right clearly and hold the signal. Not a quick flick — a sustained, visible signal.
  3. Check behind again. That second look catches vehicles that have moved since your first check.
  4. Move to the centre of the road when safe, holding primary position.
  5. Wait for a gap in oncoming traffic. Do not rush this. Sit in position, signal clearly, and wait.
  6. Complete the turn when the gap is sufficient.

On very busy roads where this feels impossible, you can use the "Copenhagen left" — a two-stage turn where you ride straight through the junction, stop on the far side, reposition to face the direction you want to go, and then cross with the next green light or gap. It takes longer but removes the need to cross traffic.

The "Looked But Failed to See" Problem

This phrase appears in police reports and coroner's inquests with depressing regularity. A driver hits a cyclist, and when asked whether they checked for traffic, they say yes. They are not lying. They looked. They just did not see.

This is inattentional blindness — a well-documented cognitive phenomenon where the brain filters out objects it is not expecting to find. Research by psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris (the famous "invisible gorilla" experiment) demonstrated that when people are focused on one task, they can completely miss unexpected objects in their visual field. Even obvious ones. Even ones they are looking directly at.

On the road, this means a driver scanning for cars and lorries at a junction may look at you, process the visual information, and still not register that a cyclist is present. Their brain is pattern-matching for large, fast-moving vehicles. You do not fit the pattern. You disappear.

Knowing this changes how you ride. You stop assuming that "they must have seen me" and start assuming the opposite. You make eye contact before committing to a manoeuvre. You position yourself where drivers expect to see traffic — in the centre of the lane, not in the periphery. You use lights in daylight because a flashing light triggers a different attentional pathway than a static object.

This is not about blaming drivers or excusing bad driving. It is about understanding a genuine cognitive limitation and adapting your riding to account for it. Assume you are invisible until proven otherwise.

The Hi-Vis Debate

Bright clothing is the cycling safety topic that generates more heat than light. Wear hi-vis, say some. It does not make any difference, say others. The research is more nuanced than either camp acknowledges.

Studies from Nottingham Trent University found that hi-vis clothing does increase the distance at which drivers detect cyclists — by roughly 30 to 40 percent in controlled conditions. That is not nothing. Being seen earlier gives a driver more time to react, more time to adjust their course, more time to not hit you.

But — and this is the critical distinction — detection distance is not the same as close-pass distance. Research from the University of Bath, led by Dr Ian Walker, found that what you wear has minimal effect on how much room drivers give you when overtaking. A cyclist in full hi-vis gets passed at roughly the same distance as a cyclist in dark clothing. The factors that most influence passing distance are road width, traffic speed, and whether there is oncoming traffic — not your outfit.

So hi-vis helps drivers see you from further away, which matters most at junctions and when emerging from side roads. But it does not stop close passes on the open road. The combination that works best, according to the available evidence: front and rear lights (even in daylight), a bright jersey (for junction detection), and a riding position that puts you in the sightline rather than the blind spot.

Reflective elements on moving parts — ankles, shoes, pedals — are particularly effective in low light because the biological motion pattern (the up-and-down of pedalling) is immediately recognisable to the human visual system as a person. A static strip of reflective tape on a jacket looks like any other reflective surface. A moving strip on an ankle looks like only one thing: a cyclist.

Single File vs Two Abreast

Few topics produce more road rage than cyclists riding two abreast. Drivers lean on horns. Comment sections overflow with fury. Local Facebook groups reach peak outrage. And most of the anger is based on a misunderstanding of both the law and the physics.

The law: Rule 66 of the Highway Code states that cyclists should ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends. It does not say cyclists must always ride in single file. Two abreast is legal on UK roads. The Highway Code is advisory, not statutory — the word "should" in the Code indicates advice, not a legal requirement.

The physics: A group of eight cyclists in single file creates a line roughly 20 metres long. A driver needs to be fully in the opposite lane for the entire 20-metre overtake, which on a typical country road takes 5 to 7 seconds. The same eight cyclists riding two abreast create a block roughly 10 metres long. The overtake takes 3 to 4 seconds. Less time on the wrong side of the road is less risk for everyone.

When two abreast is safer: On narrow lanes where a driver could not safely pass a single cyclist without crossing the centre line anyway. On roads with blind bends where a faster overtake reduces exposure. On single-track roads where the group needs to be visible early to approaching traffic.

When single file is appropriate: On busier roads where moving to single file creates enough space for vehicles to pass safely. When traffic is queuing behind the group and there is no safe overtaking opportunity. When the road is narrow enough that two abreast blocks the entire carriageway.

The key on group rides: be aware of traffic building behind you, communicate within the group, and singl up when it makes sense. "Car back" and "single out" are standard calls. Use them early, use them clearly, and reform two abreast when the road opens up.

Cameras: Deterrent and Evidence

Front and rear cameras serve two distinct purposes on the road, and both justify the cost.

Deterrent effect: A visible camera — mounted on the handlebars or on a rear light unit — changes driver behaviour. Research and anecdotal evidence from long-term camera users consistently show that drivers who notice a camera give more room. The Cycliq Fly6 (rear) and Fly12 (front) are designed to be visible, with a light function that draws attention to the camera unit. Drivers who might squeeze past a cyclist without a camera will often give a wide berth when they see one.

Evidence for reporting: When a close pass does happen, camera footage provides evidence that a verbal report cannot. Most UK police forces now accept video submissions through online portals — Operation Snap (or regional equivalents) processes thousands of submissions annually, resulting in driver education courses, fixed penalty notices, and prosecutions.

What You Need for Effective Reporting

Resolution: 1080p minimum. Anything lower and licence plates become unreadable, which makes prosecution impossible. 1440p or 4K is better but generates larger files and drains batteries faster.

Front camera: Captures licence plates of oncoming vehicles and vehicles that cut in front of you. Handlebar mount or helmet mount. The GoPro range, Cycliq Fly12, and the more budget-friendly Drift Ghost all produce usable footage. Helmet-mounted cameras have the advantage of pointing where you look, capturing your perspective at junctions.

Rear camera: Captures close passes, which are the most common reportable incident. The Cycliq Fly6 combines a rear light with a camera and is the most popular dedicated cycling rear camera. The Garmin Varia RCT715 adds radar detection to rear camera functionality. Both loop-record, so you do not need to remember to start recording.

Battery life: A commute camera needs 90 minutes minimum. A weekend ride camera needs 4 to 6 hours. Check battery life against your typical ride length before buying.

Mounting: Secure your camera properly. A camera that rattles produces unwatchable footage. A camera that falls off produces no footage and a hazard for following riders.

Night Riding: Being Seen and Seeing

Riding after dark amplifies every risk discussed above. Reduced visibility, faster-moving traffic relative to your detection distance, and a greater chance of encountering impaired or fatigued drivers.

Lights: The Non-Negotiable

Front and rear lights are a legal requirement after dark under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989. But the minimum legal requirement — a white front light and red rear light visible from 200 metres — is the bare minimum, not the target.

Front light for being seen: 200 to 400 lumens, flashing mode, aimed slightly downward so it does not blind oncoming traffic. This is your "I am here" light.

Front light for seeing: 600 to 1,000 lumens minimum, steady mode, with a beam pattern that lights the road ahead without scattering light into drivers' eyes. On unlit country roads, you need to see potholes, gravel, and bends. A cheap commuter light will not cut it.

Many riders run two front lights — one flashing for visibility, one steady for illumination. This is the best approach if you ride mixed urban and rural routes after dark.

Rear light: 50 to 100 lumens minimum, flashing mode. Mount it on the seatpost or seat stays where it is visible to following traffic. The Exposure TraceR, Lezyne Strip Drive, and Bontrager Flare RT are all proven options. A second rear light on a helmet or seatpack provides redundancy — if one fails or gets blocked by a saddlebag, you still have a visible rear light.

Reflective vs Lit Clothing

Static reflective strips on a jacket are effective when headlights hit them but invisible the rest of the time. Reflective elements on ankles, shoes, and pedals are significantly more effective because the pedalling motion creates a distinctive biological motion pattern that the human visual system detects faster than a static reflection.

Lit clothing — jerseys or gilets with integrated LED strips — is a newer category that shows promise. The Proviz Reflect360 range and similar products are visible from all angles without relying on headlights to illuminate them. For regular night riding, particularly on unlit roads, lit clothing or accessories are more effective than reflective strips alone.

Communicating with Drivers

The relationship between cyclists and drivers is not inherently adversarial, despite what social media would have you believe. Most interactions are neutral or positive. The difficult ones stick in your memory because they trigger a stress response. But how you communicate on the road — through positioning, signals, and demeanour — affects every interaction.

Hand Signals

Right arm extended: turning right. Hold it clearly, hold it early, hold it long enough for drivers to register it.

Left arm extended: turning left. Same principles apply.

Right arm raised, palm forward: slowing down or stopping. Useful at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings where drivers behind you might not see the red light.

Acknowledgement: A wave, a nod, a thumbs up when a driver gives you room or waits patiently to overtake. This costs nothing and builds goodwill. The drivers who get thanked are the drivers who give room next time.

Eye Contact

Eye contact is the single most powerful communication tool you have on a bike. At a junction, make eye contact with the driver who might pull out. If they look at you and you look at them, you both know the other exists. If they look through you or at their phone, that tells you something too.

Eye contact is not a guarantee of safety — a driver can make eye contact and still misjudge your speed — but it is the closest thing you have to confirmation that you have been seen.

The Assertive-Not-Aggressive Balance

Assertive riding means taking your road position confidently, signalling clearly, and holding your line. Aggressive riding means shouting at drivers, banging on bonnets, and escalating confrontations.

The first keeps you safe. The second puts you in danger and damages every cyclist who rides that road after you.

When a driver does something dangerous — a close pass, a left hook, a punishment pass — the adrenaline spike is real. Your instinct is to chase them down, to shout, to make them understand how close they came to killing you. Resist it. Note the registration. Check your camera footage. Report it through the proper channels. The legal system is slow and imperfect, but it works better than a screaming match at traffic lights.

Your Legal Position on UK Roads

Cyclists have the same right to use the road as any other vehicle. This is not a concession. It is the law. Roads in the UK are public highways, maintained through general taxation, and the right to use them is not contingent on paying Vehicle Excise Duty, holding a licence, or carrying insurance.

The 2022 update to the Highway Code introduced a hierarchy of road users, placing those who can cause the greatest harm at the top of the responsibility chain. In practical terms, this means drivers have a greater responsibility to watch for cyclists than cyclists have to watch for drivers. This does not mean cyclists can ride recklessly — it means the legal framework recognises the vulnerability of unprotected road users.

Key legal points:

  • There is no law requiring cyclists to use a cycle lane, even where one exists. You may choose to use the road.
  • There is no law requiring cyclists to ride in the gutter. You may take the lane.
  • Cyclists may ride two abreast. The Highway Code advises single file on narrow or busy roads but this is advisory, not statutory.
  • Drivers must leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist at speeds up to 30mph, and at least 2 metres above 30mph. This is Highway Code guidance, supported by Operation Close Pass enforcement in many police forces.
  • Cyclists are not required to carry identification, insurance, or registration.

Insurance and Legal Protection

There is no legal requirement for cyclists to carry insurance. But if you ride on public roads with any regularity, cover is worth having — and it costs remarkably little.

What You Are Covering

Third-party liability: If you cause an accident that damages a vehicle or injures a person, you are personally liable for the costs. A scratch on a car is a few hundred pounds. A collision that injures a pedestrian can run to tens of thousands. Third-party cover protects you from these costs.

Legal expenses: If a driver injures you and you need to pursue a claim, cycling-specific legal cover provides access to solicitors who specialise in road traffic incidents involving cyclists. Without cover, the cost of legal representation starts at several thousand pounds.

Personal injury: Some policies include personal injury cover, paying out if you are injured in a cycling incident regardless of fault.

Where to Get It

British Cycling membership: Includes third-party liability cover (up to 15 million pounds) and legal support for road traffic incidents. Also includes race licence if you compete. Ride membership starts from around 30 pounds per year.

Cycling UK membership: Includes third-party liability cover (up to 10 million pounds), legal advice, and incident support. Cycling UK also campaigns on infrastructure and road safety issues, so your membership funds advocacy work. Approximately 50 pounds per year.

Standalone cycling insurance: Providers like Yellow Jersey, PedalSure, and Laka offer cycling-specific insurance that can include bike theft, damage, travel, and personal accident cover alongside third-party liability. Prices vary depending on cover level and bike value.

For the cost of a couple of inner tubes a year, you get legal cover that could save you thousands. If you ride on public roads, this is not optional. It is basic protection.

Putting It All Together

Traffic riding is not a single skill. It is a collection of habits, positions, and decisions that compound into a system. Primary position at junctions. Secondary on open roads. Eye contact with drivers. Lights in all conditions. A camera running. Insurance in your back pocket.

None of these things alone makes you safe. All of them together shift the odds dramatically in your favour.

The riders who get home every day are not the fastest, the fittest, or the luckiest. They are the ones who ride predictably, position themselves where drivers expect to see traffic, and never assume they have been seen until they have confirmation. They treat every junction as a potential conflict point. They signal early, check twice, and hold their line.

And they understand something that takes most cyclists years to learn: being polite and being safe are not the same thing. Riding assertively in the centre of the lane is not rude. It is how you stay alive. The drivers who have to wait three seconds to overtake you properly will forget about you before they reach the next junction. The driver who squeezes past you with six inches to spare because you were hugging the gutter — that is a near miss you will remember for years.

Ride where you can be seen. Signal what you are going to do. Assume you are invisible until you know otherwise. Get home.

Is it legal to ride in the middle of the lane?
Yes. There is no law requiring cyclists to ride in the gutter or to the left of the lane. The Highway Code advises cyclists to ride at least half a metre from the kerb edge and to take the centre of the lane when the road narrows, approaching junctions, or when it is unsafe for vehicles to overtake. Taking the lane is a recognised safety technique endorsed by Bikeability training.
Should I always wear hi-vis?
Hi-vis improves detection distance but does not prevent close passes. Daytime running lights — front and rear — are more effective at attracting driver attention than clothing colour alone. If you want to maximise visibility, combine a bright jersey with flashing lights front and rear. In darkness, reflective elements on moving parts (ankles, pedals, shoes) are more effective than static hi-vis because the movement pattern is distinctively human.
What should I do after a close pass?
Stay calm and keep riding in a straight line. If you have a camera, the footage will record the vehicle. Note the registration plate, time, and location as soon as it is safe to stop. Report the incident through your local police force's online reporting portal — most UK forces now accept video submissions. Avoid confronting the driver directly.
Is cycling with headphones dangerous?
Cycling with headphones is not illegal in the UK, but it removes one of your key senses for detecting approaching vehicles. If you want to listen to music or podcasts, use bone conduction headphones that leave your ear canals open. These allow you to hear traffic, shouts, and horns while still getting audio.
Do I need insurance to ride on the road?
No. There is no legal requirement for cyclists to carry insurance in the UK. However, third-party liability insurance protects you if you cause damage to a vehicle or injure a pedestrian, and legal expense cover helps if you are injured by a driver. Both British Cycling and Cycling UK memberships include these as standard. The cost is less than the price of two inner tubes per year.
