You survived your first year of racing. You stayed upright, you stayed in bunches, you crossed lines, you collected enough points to upgrade. Well done. Genuinely.
Now forget everything that worked.
That sounds dramatic. It is not. The approach that carried you through Cat 4 — sit in, hold wheels, conserve energy, survive — is the same approach that will have you watching the back of a Cat 3 bunch disappear up the road within the first month of your second season. The racing is different. The riders are different. And the version of you that was good enough to get through year one is not good enough for year two.
Here is the thing nobody tells you about upgrading categories: you go from being a competent fish in a predictable pond to being the smallest, most inexperienced fish in a pond that is actively trying to spit you out. It is the single biggest step in amateur racing. And it catches almost everyone off guard.
The Category Upgrade Shock
The first time you line up for a Cat 3 race, it looks the same. Same venue. Same format. Same nervous energy in the car park. You pin your number on, roll to the start, and wait for the whistle.
Then the whistle goes and nothing is the same.
The speed is 2 to 4 km/h faster on average. That does not sound like much. It is. At 42 km/h, the effort required to stay in a bunch is meaningfully higher than at 39 km/h. The wind resistance alone — which scales with the cube of velocity — means you are working harder just to hold position, even in the draft. But the speed is not the real problem.
The real problem is what happens around you. In Cat 4, surges were chaotic. Riders accelerated for no tactical reason. Attacks were disorganised — solo efforts that blew up in two minutes, nervous pulls on the front that nobody asked for. You could sit in, read the patterns (or lack of them), and respond with relatively basic decision-making.
In Cat 3, the surges have purpose. Attacks come in coordinated pairs and groups. The rider who goes off the front has a teammate sitting fourth wheel, ready to bridge. The bunch does not slow down to let a break come back — somebody takes responsibility for the chase, or somebody deliberately blocks it. Echelons form when the crosswind hits because these riders know what a crosswind means.
And here is where it gets really interesting: the corners are faster. Not because Cat 3 riders are braver, but because they are more skilled. They carry speed through turns because they trust the rider beside them. In Cat 4, the bunch brakes into corners because nobody trusts anyone. In Cat 3, the bunch flows. If you are still braking into corners like a Cat 4 rider, you will open gaps every single time — and closing those gaps costs watts you cannot afford.
The bunch is tighter. Elbows touch more often. Riders overlap wheels with less hesitation. The spatial awareness is higher across the entire field, which means the margins are smaller. You need to be comfortable with proximity that would have felt dangerous six months ago.
Let me break this down simply. Cat 4 racing tests your fitness and your nerve. Cat 3 racing tests your race intelligence. You can no longer compensate for poor positioning with a big FTP. The field will not let you.
How Your Training Needs to Change
Your first year of racing was probably built on a foundation that looked something like this: lots of endurance rides, some threshold intervals, maybe a weekly chain gang, and a general sense that more fitness would equal better results. And it worked. In Cat 4, raw engine gets you a long way. A rider with a 300-watt FTP and no tactical awareness will still finish mid-pack in most Cat 4 fields because the average power demands are within reach of anyone with a decent aerobic base.
Cat 3 exposes the gaps that Cat 4 hid.
The specific gap is repeatability. Not your ability to produce one big effort, but your ability to produce effort after effort after effort with incomplete recovery between each one. A Cat 3 road race does not test your 20-minute power. It tests your ability to do six 90-second efforts at 130% of FTP across a 10-minute period and then recover enough in the bunch to do it again 15 minutes later.
This is fundamentally different from what most structured training programmes build. A typical training plan gives you clean intervals with full recovery — 4 x 8 minutes at threshold with 4 minutes easy between each one. That is good for building FTP. It is poor preparation for what actually happens in a race, where the recovery is never complete, the efforts are never uniform, and the intensity is dictated by the bunch, not your training plan.
What to Train Differently
Repeated efforts with short recovery. The bread and butter of Cat 3 race preparation. Try sets of 6 to 8 efforts at 120 to 150% of FTP, each lasting 60 to 90 seconds, with only 60 to 90 seconds of recovery between efforts. The recovery should be at endurance pace — not coasting, not stopping. Rest 10 minutes between sets and do two or three sets. This simulates the repeated surges of a road race better than any steady-state interval session.
Race-pace simulation. Once a week, include a session that mimics race dynamics. Thirty minutes at a high tempo with random surges thrown in — 20-second accelerations, 45-second sustained efforts above threshold, then back to tempo. There is no structure. That is the point. Racing does not come in tidy blocks. Your body needs to practise managing irregular demands.
Cornering under fatigue. Find a technical route and ride it when you are tired. Late in a long ride, when your concentration is flagging and your legs are heavy, practise carrying speed through corners, holding your line, and accelerating out of turns. Cat 3 races are won and lost in corners, and the skill degrades under fatigue faster than most riders realise.
Sprint repeatability over sprint power. A single 1,200-watt sprint is useless if you can only do it once. Practise 5 to 8 sprints in a session — full gas for 10 to 15 seconds, 3 to 5 minutes of recovery, then go again. The fifth sprint matters more than the first. By the finale of a Cat 3 race, everyone is tired. The rider who can still sprint at 80% of their fresh max has a massive advantage over the rider who blew their one good effort covering a move three laps ago.
FTP Still Matters. Just Less.
I am not saying FTP is irrelevant. A bigger engine is always better. But the difference between a 290-watt and a 310-watt FTP is far less important than the difference between a rider who can repeat 400-watt efforts all race and a rider who cracks after the third surge. Your winter base training should still build the aerobic engine. But your race-specific preparation — the 8 to 12 weeks before your target events — should shift heavily toward the kind of efforts you will actually face on race day.
Stop Racing Everything
Your first year, you probably raced everything you could get to. Every local road race. Every criterium. Every time trial within driving distance. That was the right approach for year one. You needed experience. You needed time in bunches. You needed to discover what racing felt like in different formats and on different courses.
Year two is different. Racing everything is a trap.
Here is why. Every race takes a physical toll — the effort itself, the travel, the disruption to your training week. If you race every weekend, you are never fresh enough to perform at your best, and you are never recovered enough to train properly between races. You end up in a cycle of being permanently slightly tired, permanently slightly underprepared, and permanently slightly disappointed by your results.
The fix is targeting. Pick 6 to 8 races that suit you. Think about this deliberately.
What kind of rider are you? Your first year's data will tell you. Look at your power profile — are you a steady-state rider with a strong threshold, or do you punch above your weight in short, explosive efforts? Do you climb well relative to the flat? Do you handle technical courses with confidence or do they make you anxious?
Which race profiles match? A rider who climbs well should target hilly road races and avoid flat criteriums where the sprint decides everything. A punchy rider should look for courses with short, steep rises that shatter the field. A time triallist should target races where the course allows a strong, sustained effort to make the difference — long drags, exposed roads, reduced drafting benefit.
What is your A-race? Pick two or three events where you really want to perform. Build your training blocks around these dates. Taper for them. Arrive fresh. Race with intent. Everything else on your calendar is a B-race or a C-race — useful for training, for practising tactics, for staying sharp. But you do not taper for them. You do not change your training week to accommodate them. You race them on tired legs and accept the results.
A climber entering every flat criterium is collecting participation, not results. Stop collecting. Start selecting.
The Mental Shift: From Reactive to Proactive
In year one, things happened to you. The bunch surged and you responded. A gap opened and you panicked. An attack went and you chased. You spent 90% of every race reacting to what was happening around you, and the other 10% trying to recover from your reactions.
Year two requires a different mindset entirely. You need to make things happen.
This is the single hardest transition in racing, because it requires you to stop thinking like a passenger and start thinking like a participant. In Cat 4, you could afford to be passive. The racing was disorganised enough that sitting in and responding was a viable strategy. In Cat 3, passive riders get used. They pull on the front when someone else needs them to. They chase moves that were never going to succeed. They sit in the wrong position because they never made a deliberate choice about where to be.
What Proactive Racing Looks Like
Positioning with intent. Before the race, know where you need to be at key moments. If there is a climb at 30 km, you need to be in the top 10 approaching it. If the course has a technical section that strings the bunch out, be near the front before you hit it. Do not drift to a position and hope it works out. Ride to the position you need.
Covering specific riders. After a few races in Cat 3, you will know who the dangerous riders are. The ones who win. The ones whose attacks stick. Mark them. Sit behind them. When they move, you move. This is not copying — it is race intelligence. You do not need to be the strongest rider in the field. You need to be on the wheel of the strongest rider when it matters.
Knowing when the race will split. This is instinct, and it develops with experience. A crosswind section where the road narrows. A sharp climb after a flat section where the pace has been high. The third time through a finishing circuit when legs are starting to go. These are the moments that decide races. If you can feel them coming and position yourself before they arrive, you will be on the right side of the split. If you are still reacting when they happen, you will not.
Initiating, not just responding. At some point in year two, you need to attack. Not a hopeful solo effort that burns five matches and gains nothing. A deliberate, tactical effort — bridging to a move that has the right riders in it, or attacking on the climb when you can see the bunch is strung out and the riders behind you are suffering. The first time you make a race-defining move rather than just responding to one, your relationship with racing changes completely.
Reading Races With Experience
Your first year gave you something incredibly valuable, even if you did not realise it at the time: pattern recognition.
You have seen bunches split. You know what it looks like when the pace is about to go up — the subtle signs, the riders moving up, the tension that builds before a surge. You have felt the difference between an attack that has legs and one that is going to fold in 90 seconds. You have experienced the moment when a race goes from controlled to chaotic, and you know which riders caused the shift.
Year two is about using that library deliberately.
Before each race, review the course. Where are the climbs? Where does the wind hit? Where are the technical sections? Where does the finishing straight begin? Then overlay what you know about how races develop on courses like this. A long drag into a headwind with 10 km to go means the bunch will be strung out and shattered. A flat, sheltered circuit means it comes back together and you are sprinting. A hilly course with a summit finish means the race explodes on the last climb and the front group is small.
This is not guessing. This is pattern recognition applied to specific terrain. The riders who win at amateur level are not always the strongest. They are the ones who understood how the race would unfold and positioned themselves for it before the critical moment arrived.
Your Results Will Feel Worse. They Are Not.
This is the part that nobody prepares you for, and it is the part that makes more second-year racers quit than anything else.
In Cat 4, you might have finished 8th. Maybe 5th on a good day. You felt competitive. You were making progress. Your results showed it.
In Cat 3, you finish 22nd. Then 18th. Then 15th on a day when everything went right. The numbers feel terrible. You are training harder, you are fitter, you are tactically sharper — and yet your finishing position is worse than it was six months ago.
Here is the thing nobody tells you: 15th in a Cat 3 field is a better performance than 8th in Cat 4. The riders you are finishing behind have three, four, five years of race experience. Their power numbers are higher. Their race craft is polished. Finishing mid-pack against them means you are competitive at a level that most of the Cat 4 field will never reach.
Stop measuring yourself by finishing position. Start measuring yourself by what your data tells you.
Look at your average power compared to last season. Is it higher? Look at your normalised power — is the gap between average and normalised smaller, suggesting you are riding more efficiently, surging less, wasting fewer watts on poor positioning? Look at your peak 1-minute, 5-minute, and 20-minute power in races. Are those numbers trending upward?
If the data says you are improving, you are improving. The finishing position is a function of the field strength, not your ability. It will come. The riders who stick with it through the uncomfortable middle — where the numbers say they are better but the results do not — are the ones who eventually start finishing where their fitness says they should.
Mine Your First Year's Data
You have an entire season of race files sitting on your computer. That data is worth more than any training plan you could buy.
Go through every race file from year one. Not just the power numbers — the actual race. Where did you lose position? Was it always on the same type of terrain? Did you crack at specific durations — 60 minutes in, 90 minutes in? When you got dropped, what preceded it — a climb, a sustained effort, a series of surges?
What to Look For
Where you cracked. If you consistently blew up after 75 minutes of racing, your endurance at race intensity is the limiter. If you cracked on the third hard effort in a 10-minute period, your repeatability is the limiter. The cause tells you what to train.
Where you lost position. If you consistently drifted backwards through corners, your cornering under race speed needs work. If you lost places on climbs despite having the power to hold on, your pacing on climbs is off — probably going too hard at the bottom and fading at the top.
Which races suited you. Compare your relative finishing position across different race profiles. If you consistently did better in hilly races than flat ones, you are a climber. If your best results came in short, punchy criteriums, your anaerobic system is your strength. This tells you which races to target in year two.
Your power distribution. Look at how much time you spent in each power zone during races. If you spent 40% of race time above threshold, you were either racing aggressively or — more likely — racing inefficiently, surging too hard and recovering too slowly. Compare this to the riders who finished ahead of you if you have access to their data through club files or shared platforms.
This analysis takes an afternoon. The insights it generates shape your entire second season. Do not skip it.
Building a Second-Year Season
Bring it all together. Your second season should have structure that your first season probably lacked.
November to February: Build the base. Long rides, steady endurance, progressive overload. This is where your aerobic engine grows. If your FTP needs to come up, this is when you do the threshold work — sustained efforts at 95 to 105% of FTP, twice a week, built on top of endurance volume.
March to April: Race-specific preparation. Shift toward the interval structures I described earlier. Repeated hard efforts with short recovery. Race-pace simulations. Sprint work. Cornering drills. This phase makes you race-ready, not just fit.
May to August: Race season. Your 6 to 8 target races sit in this window. Taper for your A-races — reduce volume by 30 to 40% in the week before, keep intensity in. Race your B and C events on training legs. Debrief every race, adjust your tactical approach based on what you learn, and do not panic about results in the first month.
September: Review and plan. Season reflection. Data analysis. What worked, what did not, what you need to build over the winter for year three.
This is not complicated. It is just deliberate. And deliberate is the word that separates year-two racers who progress from year-two racers who plateau.
The Rider You Are Becoming
Your first year made you a racer. Your second year makes you a competitor. The distinction matters.
A racer shows up, pins on a number, and sees what happens. A competitor shows up with a plan. They know the course. They know the riders. They know their own strengths and their own limiters. They have trained for the specific demands of this specific event. They are not hoping for a good result — they are engineering one.
You will not win every race in year two. You will probably not win any. But you will start finishing races knowing exactly what happened and why. You will stop being surprised by the way races unfold. And you will start making decisions in the bunch that influence the outcome rather than just responding to it.
That shift — from passenger to participant, from reactive to proactive, from surviving to racing — is what the second year is for. It is harder than year one in every measurable way. It is also more rewarding. Because the first time you cover the right move, position yourself before a split, and finish a race thinking "I rode that exactly how I planned it" — that feeling is worth every mid-pack result that came before it.
