You know the moment. You are forty minutes into a climb, the sun is directly overhead, and sweat starts running into your eyes. Except it is not just sweat. It is that cream you slapped on your forehead in the car park, now dissolving and stinging like you have been maced. You cannot see, you cannot wipe your face because both hands are on the bars, and you are briefly questioning every decision that brought you to this hillside.
That scenario is fixable. Almost every sun protection problem cyclists deal with is fixable. But the solutions are not what most people expect, because most of the advice out there treats cyclists like beach-goers who happen to own a bike.
We are not beach-goers. We are spending three, four, six hours in sustained direct sunlight, sweating continuously, moving through wind that strips product off the skin, and exposing body parts that nobody else in the general population exposes for that long. The backs of our hands. The tops of our ears. The V of skin below the helmet strap at the back of the neck. That narrow strip of thigh between shorts and knee.
Here is how to actually deal with it.
SPF Numbers: What They Mean and Where They Stop Mattering
Let me break this down, because the SPF system confuses almost everyone.
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how much UVB radiation (the type that causes sunburn) a product blocks. SPF 15 blocks about 93 per cent. SPF 30 blocks about 97 per cent. SPF 50 blocks about 98 per cent. SPF 100 blocks about 99 per cent.
Read those numbers again. The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is roughly one percentage point. The difference between SPF 50 and SPF 100 is another single percentage point. Once you are above 30, you are in diminishing returns territory.
Here is the thing nobody tells you: the SPF rating assumes you apply 2mg of product per square centimetre of skin. That is a thick, generous coat. Most people apply about half that amount, which means your SPF 50 is functioning more like an SPF 25 in practice. Dr Brian Diffey, the physicist who literally developed the methodology behind SPF testing, has made this point repeatedly — the gap between lab conditions and real-world application is enormous.
So the practical answer is simple. SPF 30 minimum. SPF 50 if you want a margin of error (and you should). Above 50, you are paying for marketing, not protection. Put the effort into applying enough of it and reapplying it, not into chasing higher numbers.
One more thing. SPF only measures UVB protection. UVA rays — the ones that cause deeper skin damage and premature ageing — require a separate rating. In Europe, look for the UVA circle logo. In the US, look for "broad spectrum" on the label. If your sunscreen does not say broad spectrum, it is only blocking the sunburn rays, not the damage rays.
Application: Timing and Technique
What most people do: squeeze some cream out, rub it on, walk out the door.
What actually works: apply 15-20 minutes before you start riding. Chemical sunscreens (the ones that absorb UV rather than reflecting it) need time to bond with the skin. If you apply and immediately start sweating, the product slides off before it has activated. You have wasted it.
Mineral sunscreens — the ones based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — work immediately because they sit on top of the skin and physically block UV. But they still benefit from a few minutes to set before you start moving and sweating.
How much to use? More than you think. For the face alone, dermatologists recommend about half a teaspoon. For arms, another teaspoon each. For legs, more again. If the bottle lasts you all summer, you are not applying enough.
The areas cyclists miss most often:
- Backs of the hands. Your gloves might cover the top, but if you ride in mitts or no gloves, the backs of your hands get hammered. They are facing directly up in the riding position.
- Tops of the ears. Helmet vents channel airflow but they do not block UV. The tops and rims of your ears are brutally exposed.
- Back of the neck. The gap between your helmet and your jersey collar is a UV trap. In the riding position, your head tilts forward and that strip of skin faces the sky.
- Bridge of the nose. Under sunglasses, the bridge of your nose often gets missed. It also gets the most direct exposure of any part of your face.
- That strip of thigh. Between your shorts hem and your knee, there is a band of skin that catches direct sun for hours. It is easy to forget because you cannot see it while riding.
Apply deliberately to each of these areas. Do not just wave cream in the general direction of your face and hope for the best.
Reapplication: The Part Everyone Skips
A single application of sunscreen does not last all day. It does not even last all morning. Most formulas begin to degrade after about two hours, faster if you are sweating heavily or wiping your face with your gloves.
Here is where it gets really interesting: "water-resistant" on the label means the product maintains its SPF rating after 40 minutes of water immersion. "Very water-resistant" means 80 minutes. Neither means "sweat-proof for a five-hour ride." The rating is based on sitting in a pool, not producing a litre of sweat per hour on a July sportive.
The practical approach:
- Reapply every two hours as a baseline.
- Use feed stops as prompts. If you are on a sportive with stops every 40-60km, apply sunscreen at each one. It takes 30 seconds.
- Carry a small tube. A 50ml tube weighs almost nothing in a jersey pocket. Sachets are even lighter — some brands sell individual-use foil packets designed for exactly this purpose.
- Face first. If you only have time or willingness to reapply one area, make it your face. It gets the most direct exposure and it is where skin cancer risk is highest.
I know what you are thinking. "I'm not stopping mid-ride to put on suncream." Fair enough. But if you are stopping to fill bottles, eat a bar, or use a toilet, you have time. Build it into the routine. It becomes automatic within a few rides.
The Eye-Sting Problem: Solved
If you have ever had sunscreen run into your eyes on a climb, you know how debilitating it is. Temporary blindness, burning pain, watering eyes. Genuinely dangerous if you are descending or in traffic.
The cause is almost always chemical sunscreen migrating with sweat. Chemical filters like avobenzone and oxybenzone are absorbed into the skin, but under heavy sweating, they dissolve into the sweat stream and run down your forehead into your eyes.
The fix is straightforward: use a mineral sunscreen on your face. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on top of the skin as a physical barrier. They do not dissolve into sweat the same way. They are not immune to running, but the irritant effect is dramatically lower.
The best approach is a two-product system. Mineral sunscreen on the face, ears, and neck. Chemical sunscreen on the body (arms, legs, hands) where eye contact is not an issue and where you want a lighter, less visible formula. Chemical sunscreens tend to absorb more cleanly and leave less white residue, which matters less on your face under sunglasses but matters more on your legs if you care about that sort of thing.
A cycling cap or headband under your helmet also helps. It acts as a sweat dam, catching runoff before it reaches your eyes and buying you more time before your face sunscreen migrates.
Sun Sleeves vs. Sunscreen
Let me be really clear about this: for arm protection on rides over two or three hours, sun sleeves are better than sunscreen. Full stop.
They do not wash off. They do not need reapplication. They provide consistent UPF 50+ coverage from wrist to bicep. They weigh almost nothing. Most modern sun sleeves are made from lightweight mesh fabric with moisture-wicking properties — they are cooler than bare skin in direct sun because they block the radiant heat.
The arguments against them are mostly aesthetic. They look unusual if you are not used to them. They create a different tan line than the classic cyclist mid-bicep mark. But in terms of actual skin protection, they outperform any sunscreen you can buy.
They are especially useful for:
- Sportives and long training rides where you are out for four hours or more.
- Spring and autumn riding where the air is cool but the UV index is higher than you expect.
- Fair-skinned riders who burn through sunscreen before the first feed stop.
- Races and events where stopping to reapply is not practical.
Pair sun sleeves with sunscreen on the face, neck, ears, and hands, and you have covered nearly every exposed area without needing to reapply anything on your arms for the entire ride.

The Cyclist's Tan Lines
We need to talk about this. Because every piece of sun protection advice seems to treat tan lines as a problem to be solved, and that misses the point.
Cyclist tan lines are part of the culture. The sock line. The shorts line. The glove line. The jersey sleeve line. You have earned those marks through hours on the bike, and they tell a story that non-cyclists do not understand. There is a reason riders at coffee stops compare them with pride rather than embarrassment.
So I am not going to lecture you about avoiding them. What I will say is this: there is a difference between a tan and a burn. A tan, however it looks, represents some degree of UV damage — but a burn is actually harmful. The cells are damaged. The DNA repair mechanisms are overwhelmed. Repeated burns, especially blistering burns, measurably increase skin cancer risk.
The goal is not to ride without ever seeing the sun. The goal is to ride without burning. If you finish a ride and your skin is red, hot, and tender, you did not protect yourself well enough. If you finish with deeper colour on exposed skin but no pain, you managed it better — though the ideal is still to block as much UV as possible.
The tan lines will happen regardless. Sunscreen does not prevent tanning entirely. It slows it and reduces the damage associated with it. You can have the lines and still protect yourself.
Skin Cancer Awareness: Facts Without Fear
Here is something worth knowing. Outdoor endurance athletes accumulate substantially more lifetime UV exposure than the general population. A study of recreational cyclists in Spain found that riders training 10-15 hours per week received three to four times the annual UV dose of non-athletes. Research published in the Archives of Dermatology documented higher rates of actinic keratosis — a pre-cancerous skin condition — in outdoor athletes compared to matched indoor exercisers.
Cycling adds specific factors. Hours of sustained exposure at altitude, where UV intensity increases by roughly 10-12 per cent for every 1,000 metres gained. Road surfaces that reflect UV back upward. Riding near water, which reflects UV at your face from below. Exposure at times of day (10am to 3pm) when UV intensity is highest.
None of this means cycling causes cancer. It means unprotected outdoor exposure for thousands of cumulative hours carries a measurable risk, and cycling puts you in that category faster than most activities.
The good news: this is entirely manageable.
- Wear sunscreen consistently. Not perfectly, just consistently.
- Use sun sleeves and clothing to reduce reliance on cream for body coverage.
- Get an annual skin check with a dermatologist. This is the single most valuable thing you can do. They check moles, spots, and any new growths systematically. Early detection of skin cancer has an excellent prognosis. It is a 20-minute appointment once a year.
- Know the ABCDE rule for moles: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter over 6mm, Evolving shape or colour. If a mole changes, get it checked. Do not wait.
This is not about fear. It is about being practical. You service your bike, you look after your nutrition, you manage your recovery. Looking after your skin is the same category of maintenance. Book the appointment.
What to Look for in a Cycling Sunscreen
Not all sunscreens work well for cycling. Here is what to prioritise:
Sweat resistance. Look for "very water-resistant" (80-minute rating) as a minimum. Sport-specific formulas from brands like Ultrasun, P20, Sun Bum, and Blue Lizard are formulated for sustained sweating. Generic high-street sunscreens are designed for a day at the park, not four hours of continuous perspiration.
Broad spectrum. UVA and UVB protection. Non-negotiable.
Non-comedogenic. If you are prone to breakouts (and sweat plus sunscreen is a reliable recipe for blocked pores), look for this on the label. It means the formula is less likely to clog pores.
Texture. For the body, a spray or light lotion applies faster and is easier to spread over arms and legs. For the face, a cream or gel with mineral filters gives you the eye-sting protection discussed above. Some riders use a dedicated face stick — essentially a solid sunscreen in a glue-stick format — which is fast to apply and does not run.
Size. For your jersey pocket, 50ml tubes are the sweet spot. Anything larger becomes awkward. Some riders decant their favourite formula into a small travel bottle.
Riding in Different Conditions
Overcast days. Up to 80 per cent of UV radiation penetrates cloud cover. Clouds reduce visible light and heat, which makes you feel safer, but they do not block UV meaningfully. Apply sunscreen on cloudy days exactly as you would on clear ones.
Spring and early season. The UV index in northern Europe and the northern US can reach moderate levels (3-5) from March onwards — well before it feels warm enough to think about sunscreen. Your skin is also at its palest and most vulnerable after winter. Spring burns are common because riders simply forget.
High altitude. If you are riding in the mountains — whether that is the Alps, the Pyrenees, or a training camp in Girona — UV increases with elevation. At 2,000 metres, UV intensity is roughly 20-24 per cent higher than at sea level. Factor this into your application frequency and SPF choice.
Near water. Coastal rides and lakeside routes reflect UV upward onto your face and under your chin. You get exposed from two directions simultaneously. A higher SPF and more frequent reapplication make sense on these rides.
Early morning and late evening. Below a UV index of 2, the risk is low and most riders can comfortably ride without sunscreen. Check your local UV index forecast — most weather apps include it. On long midsummer rides that start at dawn and finish in the afternoon, you might start without sunscreen and apply it once the UV index rises above 3.
The Practical Checklist
Before every ride in season:
- Check the UV index. Above 3, apply sunscreen.
- Apply 15-20 minutes before you start.
- Hit the commonly missed spots: ears, back of neck, backs of hands, bridge of nose.
- Mineral formula on the face. Chemical or mineral on the body.
- Sun sleeves on for anything over two hours.
- Pack a small tube or sachet for reapplication.
- Reapply at every major stop, minimum every two hours.
On sportive or event days, add sunscreen to your event packing list alongside your bottles, food, and spares. It takes up less space than a spare tube and it is just as important.

The Short Version
SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 by default. Apply enough of it, 15-20 minutes before you ride. Reapply every two hours. Use mineral sunscreen on your face to avoid the eye-sting problem. Use sun sleeves for arm coverage on long rides because they are more reliable than cream. Get an annual skin check. Wear your tan lines with pride, but make sure they are tans, not burns.
Your skin is the largest organ you have got, and it is the one you expose to more environmental stress than any other when you ride. Treat it the way you treat your hydration, your fuelling, and your recovery — as a system that needs a plan, not an afterthought.
