The wrong kit ruins rides. Not in a dramatic way — in a slow, grinding, "I should have stayed in bed" way. Too much and you are soaked in sweat on the first climb. Too little and your hands stop working on the descent. Both scenarios end the same: you spend three hours wishing you were somewhere else.
I have got this wrong hundreds of times. Stood in the car park in February wearing a short-sleeve jersey because the sun was out. Drowned in layers on a September morning that turned into 22°C by noon. Every cyclist has a story like this.
The fix is simple, and it starts with one rule.
The Golden Rule
Dress for how you will feel fifteen minutes into the ride. Not how you feel walking out the front door.
If you are comfortable standing still in your kit, you are overdressed. You should feel slightly cold at the start. The discomfort lasts five to ten minutes. Then your body generates heat, the blood starts moving, and you settle into the right temperature.
This catches people out because it feels counterintuitive. Your brain says "I'm cold, add another layer." Your legs are about to produce 150-300 watts of heat for the next three hours. Trust the effort. Trust the kit.
The exception: descents. If you are climbing for an hour and then descending for twenty minutes, you need to plan for both. More on that below.
Temperature-by-Temperature Kit Guide
This is the section you will come back to. Bookmark it. Screenshot it. Whatever works.
Every rider runs slightly hotter or colder than average. Use these as starting points and adjust based on your own experience. After a few rides, you will know your personal thresholds.
Above 30°C — Survival Mode
Heat is the enemy here, not cold. Your kit choices matter less than your hydration strategy.
- Light-coloured short-sleeve jersey — white or light pastels reflect heat noticeably compared to black
- Bib shorts — standard, nothing thermal
- Sunscreen on arms, legs, neck, and ears (reapply every two hours)
- Sun sleeves (optional) — some riders prefer UV-blocking sleeves to constant sunscreen reapplication
- White cap under helmet — keeps direct sun off your scalp
- Two bottles minimum — electrolyte in both, not plain water
Above 30°C, the real risk is dehydration and heat exhaustion, not clothing choices. Use our hydration calculator to figure out your fluid targets before you roll out. Ride early or ride late. Avoid the midday heat if you can.
25-30°C — Standard Summer
The sweet spot for riding. Kit is simple.
- Short-sleeve jersey — any colour works here
- Bib shorts
- Sunscreen — still important, even on overcast days
- Single bottle is fine for rides under 90 minutes; two bottles for anything longer
No warmers needed. No gilet. This is the temperature range where you can forget about clothing and focus on the ride.
20-25°C — The Perfect Window
Most riders would pick this range if they could choose the weather. Warm enough for shorts, cool enough that you are not overheating on climbs.
- Short-sleeve jersey
- Bib shorts
- Arm warmers in a pocket — for descents or if the temperature drops later in the ride
This is also the range where early-morning starts can catch you out. It might be 14°C when you leave at 7am and 23°C by 10am. Start with arm warmers on, peel them off as it warms up.
15-20°C — The "Can't Decide" Zone
More kit gets ruined in this range than any other. You stand at the door and honestly cannot tell if you need arm warmers or a long-sleeve jersey, shorts or tights. The answer: removable layers.
- Short-sleeve jersey + arm warmers (on, not pocketed)
- Bib shorts + knee warmers or light leg warmers
- Gilet in the back pocket for descents
- Light base layer — mesh is fine, just something to wick sweat
The principle: anything you put on should be removable without stopping. Arm warmers roll down and pocket. Knee warmers slide off. A gilet unzips and folds into a jersey pocket. If the sun comes out and it warms to 22°C, you are not trapped in a long-sleeve thermal.
This is the temperature range where arm warmers and a gilet earn their reputation as the two most important pieces in cycling. They solve more kit dilemmas than any other combination.
10-15°C — Properly Cool
You are now in territory where starting cold is normal and expected. The first ten minutes will feel uncomfortable. Resist the urge to add more.
- Long-sleeve jersey or short-sleeve + arm warmers (personal preference — long-sleeve is simpler)
- Bib tights or shorts + leg warmers
- Gilet — worn, not pocketed
- Light full-finger gloves — your hands are extended forward into the wind; they cool faster than anything else
- Toe covers or light overshoes — cold feet are miserable and they do not warm up once they are gone
Below 15°C, your extremities start losing heat faster than your core. This is where gloves and toe covers shift from optional to essential. Your torso will stay warm from effort. Your fingers and toes will not.
5-10°C — Cold Weather Riding
This is where kit selection becomes the difference between a good ride and a terrible one. Underdress here and the ride is over within 45 minutes.
- Thermal long-sleeve jersey — look for fleece-lined or brushed-back fabrics
- Bib tights — fleece-lined, not just Lycra
- Gilet or light jacket over the jersey — wind protection on the chest is critical
- Winter gloves — full-finger, insulated, windproof on the back of the hand
- Overshoes — full coverage, not just toe covers
- Neck gaiter or buff — covers the gap between jersey collar and helmet
- Base layer — merino or synthetic thermal, not mesh
The key insight at this temperature: wind is the real problem. A 5°C day with no wind is manageable. A 5°C day with a 30km/h headwind feels like minus five. Check the wind chill calculator before choosing your kit — it tells you what the temperature actually feels like at riding speed.
Merino base layers work brilliantly here. They regulate temperature, wick moisture, and do not stink after three hours. Synthetic thermal base layers are cheaper and dry faster but need washing after every ride.
0-5°C — Deep Winter
You are now in the territory where the wrong kit can be dangerous, not just uncomfortable. Hypothermia is a real risk on long rides if you get wet or stop.
- Heavy thermal jersey or softshell jacket as the mid-layer
- Winter jacket over the top — windproof, water-resistant, breathable
- Deep winter bib tights — the thickest you own
- Heavyweight winter gloves — lobster-claw gloves keep fingers together for warmth; bar mitts work for extreme cold
- Full neoprene overshoes
- Thermal skull cap under helmet — a huge amount of heat escapes through your head
- Neck gaiter pulled up over the chin
- Double base layer — mesh next to skin, merino or thermal over it
The double base layer deserves explanation. A thin mesh layer sits against your skin and moves sweat away. The thermal layer on top traps warm air and insulates. Together they work far better than a single thick layer, which just gets wet from the inside and then you are cold.
At this temperature, reduce your ride ambitions. Two hours is plenty. Carry a phone and emergency cash. Tell someone where you are going.
Below 0°C — Ask Yourself the Question
Everything from the 0-5°C list, plus:
- Chemical toe warmers — stuff them inside your overshoes, between sock and shoe
- Neoprene face cover or balaclava — exposed skin at minus-something plus wind chill is brutal
- Emergency foil blanket in a pocket — if you puncture and stop, your body temperature drops within minutes
And the honest question: should you be on the turbo trainer instead?
Below zero, the road surface becomes the risk. Black ice is invisible. Shaded corners stay frozen all day. A crash at 40km/h on ice is not the same as a crash on dry tarmac. Your body does not bounce the same way at minus three.
If you do ride outside below zero — and there are good reasons to, for mental health and because indoor training is grinding — pick routes you know well, avoid shaded descents, and ride conservatively. This is not the day for Strava segments.

The Descent Factor
Here is where most riders get caught. You climb for forty minutes, generating 200-plus watts of heat. Your body is warm, possibly sweating. Then you tip over the top and descend for fifteen minutes at 50-60km/h, producing zero watts but facing a wall of cold air.
The temperature drops roughly 6-8°C for every 1,000m of altitude gained. If it is 18°C at the bottom of a climb and you ascend 1,000m, the summit is 10-12°C. Then add wind chill from the descent speed. That 10°C becomes a feels-like of 0°C at 50km/h.
The rule: if you are climbing more than 500m and the temperature is below 15°C, pocket a gilet at the bottom. Put it on at the top before you descend. Take it off at the bottom. It adds thirty seconds. It saves the ride.
On big alpine climbs or any descent over ten minutes, consider packing a lightweight rain jacket rather than just a gilet. Your arms are fully extended on the drops, exposed to wind, and arm warmers alone will not cut it at altitude.

Rain Changes Everything
Wet cold and dry cold are different sports.
At 12°C in dry conditions, a long-sleeve jersey and bib tights are enough. At 12°C in the rain, it feels like 5°C. Water conducts heat away from your body roughly 25 times faster than air. Once your kit is wet, every piece of insulation loses most of its value.
Rain Kit Essentials
Rain jacket or cape. A proper cycling rain jacket is breathable, waterproof, and cuts the wind. A rain cape is cheaper, covers more, and works surprisingly well for steady riding — less so for hard efforts where it flaps and traps sweat.
Overshoes. Non-negotiable in rain, regardless of temperature. Wet shoes take hours to dry. Riding with cold, wet feet for three hours destroys morale faster than anything else.
Waterproof gloves. In cold rain, these matter more than a waterproof jacket. You cannot brake safely with numb hands. Neoprene gloves work well — they let water in but retain heat against the skin.
Cap under helmet. A peaked cap keeps water out of your eyes. Small thing. Massive difference.
Mudguards. Full-length mudguards or clip-on options for road bikes stop road spray hitting your lower back. That constant stream of cold, dirty water sapping heat from your core is worse than the rain falling from the sky.
The Rain Rule of Thumb
Whatever you would normally wear for the temperature, move everything one band colder. If it is 15°C and raining, dress as if it is 10°C. If it is 10°C and raining, dress as if it is 5°C. This consistently works better than trying to guess.
The "Looks Don't Matter" Principle
There is a type of cyclist who refuses to wear mismatched kit. Same brand head to toe. Colour-coordinated. Instagram-ready.
In July, fill your boots. In February, comfort wins.
If your warmest gloves are black, your jacket is orange, and your overshoes are a weird shade of green, wear all of them. Nobody on the road cares what you look like. The riders who get through winter and come out fit in March are the riders who dressed ugly and stayed warm.
Pro riders wear matched kit because sponsors pay them to. You are paying for your own kit. Wear what works.
The only cosmetic rule worth following: if you can see yourself in a mirror and something could flap, catch, or snag, fix it. Loose clothing at speed is a safety issue, not a fashion issue.
Common Mistakes
Overdressing for intensity. A 60-minute threshold session generates far more heat than a 4-hour endurance ride. If you are planning hard intervals, dress lighter than the temperature chart suggests. You will be producing 250-350 watts of heat for sustained periods.
Underdressing for descents. Covered above, but it is the most common cold-weather mistake. You dress for the climb and forget you have to come back down.
Forgetting sunscreen in spring. April and May catch people out every year. The air temperature might be 14°C but the UV index is already moderate. You ride for four hours in a short-sleeve jersey, feel fine, and come home looking like a lobster.
Cotton anything. Cotton absorbs sweat, holds it against your skin, and loses all insulating properties when wet. This applies to socks, base layers, and especially underwear worn under bib shorts (which you should not be wearing anyway — bibs go directly against skin).
Thick socks in cold weather. Counterintuitive, but thick socks restrict blood flow inside a tight cycling shoe. Less blood flow means colder feet. A thinner merino sock with a good overshoe works far better than a thick sock jammed into a shoe that is suddenly too tight.
Skipping the gilet. A packable gilet weighs 80-120 grams, fits in a jersey pocket, and solves more temperature problems than any other single piece of kit. If you own one item beyond the basics, make it a gilet.
Building Your Kit Wardrobe
You do not need everything on day one. If you are starting from a summer-only wardrobe, add pieces in this order:
- Arm warmers — the most versatile single purchase
- Gilet — covers the widest range of conditions per dollar spent
- Leg warmers — extend your shorts into cooler months
- Full-finger gloves — light pair for 8-12°C
- Overshoes — toe covers first, then full overshoes
- Thermal base layer — merino if you can stretch to it
- Bib tights — for regular riding below 10°C
- Winter jacket — for sub-5°C riding
- Winter gloves — insulated, windproof
That order gets you through most conditions. Items 1-6 cover probably 90% of riding days in northern Europe.
Cold Weather Burns More Calories
One thing riders forget: your body burns significantly more energy maintaining core temperature in cold conditions. A three-hour ride at 5°C burns measurably more calories than the same ride at 20°C, even at identical power output.
This means fuelling matters more in winter, not less. Pack an extra gel or bar. Eat before you feel hungry. Cold suppresses appetite — you will feel less like eating precisely when your body needs more fuel.
Kit is not complicated once you have done it a few times. The temperature chart above is a starting point. Your body will tell you the rest. Pay attention to what works and what does not. Keep a mental note of what you wore and how it felt. After one full season of riding through every temperature, you will not need a chart at all.
