The track teaches things that the road cannot. Not because the road is a bad teacher, but because the road allows you to hide. You can coast on descents. The madison, the points race, the scratch race: these are formats that force you to read a race in real time, to react instantly, and to ride in physical contact with other riders at high speed. You cannot develop those instincts by doing solo intervals on a dual carriageway.
Wiggins is the clearest example of the pipeline working in both directions. He won Olympic gold on the track, then won the Tour de France, then went back to the track and won Olympic gold again. The two disciplines fed each other. The road built his aerobic engine. The track maintained his neuromuscular sharpness, his bike handling, and his ability to produce explosive power on demand.
Geraint Thomas started as a track rider. Won team pursuit gold in Beijing and London before he became a Grand Tour contender. Watch Thomas in a bunch — the way he moves through the peloton, the way he holds his line in tight spaces, the calmness he shows when riders are crashing around him. That composure was built on the track, where riding at speed in close quarters is not an emergency but a Tuesday evening session.
Ethan Hayter is the most recent example and perhaps the most relevant for amateur riders. Hayter's track racing gave him the tactical intelligence and the finishing speed that made him dangerous on the road from his very first professional season. His ability to read a race, to position himself, and to time a sprint — all track skills, applied to road finishes.
None of these riders used the track as a novelty. They used it as a training ground for the specific skills that road racing rewards. And those skills are not limited to professionals. They transfer at every level of the sport.
What track teaches you
The benefits of track cycling for road riders fall into four categories. Each one addresses a specific limitation that road-only training leaves unresolved.
Cadence fluency
A fixed-gear bike does not freewheel. When the wheels turn, your legs turn. If the bunch accelerates, your cadence goes up whether you want it to or not. If you come into a banked turn at speed, your legs are spinning at 100-plus rpm and you have no option to coast and recover.
This constant pedalling at high cadence does something that road riding rarely achieves: it rewires your neuromuscular coordination. Most road cyclists have a comfortable cadence window of about 80-95 rpm. Outside that window, they become inefficient. Their pedal stroke develops dead spots. Their hips start bouncing in the saddle. Their power drops.
Track riders operate in a wider window — comfortably pedalling from 90 rpm in a slow group ride up to 130 rpm or higher in a flying lap. Bunch riding confidence
This is the big one. The skill that separates riders who race well from riders who merely ride well.
Close-quarters bunch riding is terrifying the first time you experience it. Handlebars overlapping. Wheels inches apart. The sound of other riders breathing. The constant micro-adjustments to speed and line. Most amateur road cyclists avoid the scary parts of the bunch — sitting at the back, giving themselves space, braking rather than holding a line. And that avoidance makes them worse, not better, because they never develop the comfort and the reflexes that bunch riding requires.
The track compresses the learning curve. In a velodrome session, you are riding in a group at speed on a surface that is smooth, predictable, and free of hazards. Everyone is moving in the same direction. The banking means that speed holds itself through the turns rather than requiring you to brake. And the coached environment means someone is watching, correcting, and keeping the session safe.
Within five or six track sessions, most road cyclists report a noticeable shift in their comfort level when riding in a road bunch. The proximity that used to trigger a stress response starts to feel normal. The micro-adjustments that used to require conscious thought become reflexive. Tactical intelligence
Road racing is tactically rich, but the decisions are spread across hours. In a four-hour road race, the critical tactical moments — the breakaway selection, the crosswind echelon, the final-kilometre positioning — might occupy fifteen minutes of active decision-making across the entire race.
Track racing inverts this ratio. In a points race, you are making tactical decisions every 15-20 seconds. When to move up. When to sit in. When to contest the sprint. When to let it go. Who to follow. Who to avoid. The races are short — twenty to forty minutes — and the density of tactical situations per minute is ten times higher than road racing.
This compressed decision-making is a form of deliberate practice for race intelligence. Your brain gets more repetitions of the pattern-recognition and decision-making loop in one evening of track racing than in a month of road races. And because the consequences of a bad decision on the track are immediate — you lose the wheel, you miss the sprint, you get boxed in — the feedback loop is tight. Sprint timing
Timing a sprint is not about power. It is about reading the moment, choosing the gear, and committing. Riders who sprint well on the road almost always have a background that included some form of sprint-specific racing, and the track is where most of them learned it.
The track teaches you to feel the right moment — the point where the pace slows fractionally, where a gap opens on the inside, where the rider ahead starts to fade. It teaches you to commit fully once you go, because on a fixed gear there is no soft-pedalling and no taking it back. And it teaches you the physical sensation of an all-out effort from a high base speed, which is something you cannot replicate in training without other riders to race against. Getting started at the velodrome
The barrier to entry for track cycling is lower than most road cyclists assume.
Finding a velodrome
The UK has more velodromes than people realise. The big ones — the Lee Valley VeloPark in London, the Manchester Velodrome, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, the Derby Arena, the Newport Geraint Thomas National Velodrome — are the obvious starting points. But there are also outdoor tracks at Herne Hill, Calshot, Preston Park in Brighton, and several others that run regular sessions.
In Ireland, the Sundrive Velodrome in Dublin runs beginner sessions and league racing. Across Europe, almost every major city has a velodrome with a programme for new riders.
The easiest way to find your nearest track is through your national federation's website — British Cycling, Cycling Ireland, or the UCI's velodrome directory. Search for "taster sessions" or "beginner track sessions" and you will find options.
What to expect at your first session
Your first track session will follow a predictable pattern, and knowing what to expect removes most of the anxiety.
You will arrive, sign in, and be given a hire bike. This will be a fixed-gear bike with no brakes, drop handlebars, and a single gear ratio (usually something like 48x15 or 49x15 — a moderate gear that allows you to pedal comfortably without excessive speed). The bike will look stripped-down and unfamiliar. That is normal.
The session will start with a briefing. The coach will explain the rules of the track: always ride anticlockwise, overtake on the outside only, never stop pedalling, and slow down by gradually reducing your pedalling force rather than locking up. They will explain the lines on the track — the black measurement line at the bottom, the red sprinter's line, the blue stayer's line — and what each one means.
Then you will ride. Slowly at first. The coach will have you do laps at a comfortable pace, getting used to the fixed gear and the banking. The sensation of not being able to freewheel is strange for about three minutes and then becomes completely natural. The banking feels steep when you walk on it but barely noticeable at speed — the faster you go, the more the track flattens out beneath you.
After the warm-up, most beginner sessions progress to group riding — following wheels, holding a pace line, practising changes at the front. This is where the bunch riding skills start to develop. By the end of a one-hour session, you will have done more close-quarters group riding than most road cyclists do in a month.
Kit
You need very little. Cycling shorts and a jersey. A helmet — most velodromes will have helmets to hire if you forget yours. Shoes with a stiff sole — your road cycling shoes are perfect, and most track hire bikes come fitted with SPD or Look pedals to match. Gloves are strongly recommended in case of a fall on the boards.
You do not need a skinsuit, an aero helmet, or matching kit. The regulars at every track session include riders in ratty jerseys and ancient shorts. Nobody cares what you are wearing. They care that you ride safely and follow the rules.
Cost
Beginner taster sessions at most UK velodromes cost between $15 and $30, including bike hire. This is less than the entry fee for most sportives and a fraction of the cost of a new pair of tyres. If you decide to continue, regular session fees are typically $10-$20 per evening, and many velodromes offer season passes or block booking discounts.
Track session types for road cyclists
Not all track sessions are equally useful for road riders. Some are pure sprint events that favour track specialists. Others replicate the exact tactical and physical demands of road racing. Here is where to focus your time.
Scratch race
The scratch race is the closest thing the track has to a road race. Everyone starts together, everyone finishes together, and the first rider across the line wins. Simple.
What makes it valuable for road cyclists is the bunch dynamics. A track scratch race involves reading the group, responding to attacks, positioning for the finish, and timing a sprint from a wheel. The skills are identical to the final three kilometres of a road race, compressed into fifteen to thirty minutes. You get more practice at race-finishing craft in one evening of scratch racing than in three months of road races.
Points race
The points race adds a layer of complexity that mirrors the strategic depth of a road stage race. Sprints happen every few laps, with points awarded to the top finishers in each sprint. The winner is the rider with the most points at the end, not necessarily the first rider across the final line.
This forces you to think tactically across the entire race. When to contest the sprint. When to save energy. When to attack for a lap gain (gaining an entire lap on the field, which carries a large points bonus). The decision-making load is constant and the time available for each decision is minimal. This is the track event that most closely trains the race intelligence that road cyclists need.
Flying laps
A flying lap is a timed effort — one lap of the track at maximum speed from a rolling start. It is the track equivalent of a time trial, and it trains pure top-end power and aerobic capacity in a short, intense format.
For road cyclists, the value of flying laps is not the time itself but the sensation of riding at absolute maximum cadence on a fixed gear. You will hit 120-140 rpm. Your legs will be spinning faster than they have ever spun on the road. This forces your neuromuscular system to adapt to higher firing rates, and that adaptation transfers directly to your road pedalling efficiency. Standing starts
A standing start is exactly what it sounds like — from a dead stop, held upright by a coach or a starting gate, you launch into a maximal effort. It is the most explosive thing you can do on a bicycle.
For road cyclists, standing starts build the raw neuromuscular power that translates to accelerations out of corners, surges to close gaps, and the initial jump in a sprint. The standing start on a fixed gear, where you have to get a heavy gear turning from zero, recruits every muscle fibre you have and teaches your nervous system to fire them all simultaneously.
Motor-paced sessions
In a motor-paced session, you ride behind a motorbike (or an electric pacer) at speeds higher than you could sustain alone. The draft from the motor allows you to pedal at 50-60 kph while producing only moderate power. The training effect is similar to flying laps — your legs learn to turn over at very high cadences — but the sustained nature of the effort adds an aerobic component.
Motor-paced riding also teaches you to hold a wheel at high speed in turbulent air. The slipstream behind a motor is not smooth — it shifts and buffets — and learning to maintain your position in that draft is directly transferable to riding behind a fast rider on the road.
The fixed-gear advantage
The single biggest training difference between track and road is the fixed gear. No coasting. No freewheeling. Every revolution of the wheel is a revolution of your legs. This distinction sounds minor. It is not.
On a road ride, you coast more than you think. Descents, junctions, traffic lights, the natural recovery that happens every time you stop pedalling for even five seconds. Studies on pedalling time have shown that in a typical two-hour road ride, your legs are actually turning for about 70-80% of the total time. The rest is freewheeling.
On the track, your pedalling time is 100%. Every second you are moving, you are pedalling. A one-hour track session delivers more pedalling revolutions than a two-hour road ride. And those revolutions are continuous — there are no micro-breaks to interrupt the neuromuscular pattern.
This has two effects. First, it is a more efficient use of your training time. If you are time-crunched — and most amateur riders in the 35-55 age bracket are — an hour on the track gives you more pedalling stimulus than an hour on the road. Second, the continuous nature of the pedalling teaches your muscles to work through fatigue rather than recovering from it. On the road, your body learns to pedal-coast-pedal-coast. On the track, it learns to pedal-pedal-pedal. The rider who can pedal smoothly through fatigue without dead spots or form breakdown is the rider who holds the wheel in the closing kilometres of a road race.
The fixed gear also eliminates a bad habit that most road cyclists do not even know they have: soft-pedalling through the bottom and top of the pedal stroke. On a geared bike with a freewheel, you can get away with pushing down and pulling up without completing a full circle. The freewheel fills in the gaps. On a fixed gear, there are no gaps to fill. Any dead spot in your pedal stroke is immediately punished with a jolt, a loss of momentum, or an uncomfortable sensation in your knees. Your body adapts by developing a truly circular pedal stroke — and that efficiency carries over when you get back on the road bike. Safety on the track
The perception is that track cycling is dangerous. Fixed gear, no brakes, high speeds, banked corners, riders in close proximity. It sounds terrifying.
The reality is that track cycling is one of the safest forms of competitive cycling. Considerably safer than road racing. Here is why.
No traffic. This is the obvious one, but it is worth stating explicitly. The single biggest risk factor in cycling — motor vehicles — is entirely absent from the velodrome. No cars pulling out. No lorries passing too close. No distracted drivers looking at their phones. The track is a closed, controlled environment where the only things moving are bicycles and the riders on them.
No surface hazards. The track surface is smooth, consistent, and maintained. No potholes. No gravel. No wet manhole covers. No painted white lines that turn into ice rinks in the rain. The predictability of the surface means that you can trust your tyres in a way that is simply not possible on the road.
Predictable movement. Everyone rides in the same direction. Everyone follows the same rules about overtaking and line usage. The movements of the riders around you are constrained and predictable in a way that road traffic — including other road cyclists — is not. Closing speeds between riders are low because everyone is moving in the same direction at similar speeds. On the road, you encounter head-on traffic, riders coming from side roads, and pedestrians stepping out. On the track, you encounter riders going roughly the same speed as you, roughly the same direction as you.
Controlled environment. Track sessions are coached and supervised. Someone is watching. If a rider is doing something unsafe, they are corrected or removed from the session. This level of supervision does not exist on the road.
Do crashes happen on the track? Yes. When twenty riders are racing in close proximity at 45 kph, there is always a risk. But the typical track crash is a low-speed slide on a smooth wooden surface — painful but rarely serious. The high-speed, high-impact crashes that characterise road cycling — hitting a car, going down on loose gravel at 60 kph, sliding into a metal barrier on a wet descent — are structurally impossible on the track.
How to fit track into your road programme
The practical question for any road cyclist considering the track is not whether it is beneficial but how to integrate it without disrupting existing training.
Here is the good news: track sessions are short and the recovery cost is modest. A typical evening session is 60-90 minutes of riding. The efforts are intense but brief, and the overall training stress score is comparable to a moderately hard road ride rather than a race or a long threshold session.
For most amateur riders, replacing one midweek road ride with a track session is the simplest integration. If you currently ride three to four times per week, swapping your Tuesday or Wednesday ride for a track evening gives you all the benefits without adding volume. Your total weekly training hours stay the same. Your training stress stays the same. But the quality and specificity of that one session improves dramatically.
If you use a structured training plan and track your training zones, count a track session as a high-intensity day. It is not a recovery ride. Schedule it on a day when you would normally do intervals or a hard group ride, not on a rest day or an easy spin day.
A practical weekly structure for a road cyclist adding track might look like this:
- Monday: Rest or easy spin
- Tuesday: Track session (replace midweek intervals)
- Wednesday: Recovery ride
- Thursday: Tempo or sweet spot road ride
- Saturday: Long endurance ride
- Sunday: Group ride or race
The track session replaces rather than adds. This is important. The most common mistake riders make when adding something new to their programme is bolting it on top of existing training rather than substituting it in. More is not better. Different is better.
If your velodrome runs a winter league — most do — commit to the full series. Eight to twelve weeks of consistent weekly track sessions is where the real transformation happens. The first three weeks are about familiarity. Weeks four through eight are where the neuromuscular adaptations start to accelerate. The masters advantage
Here is where it gets really interesting for the audience that reads this site. If you are in the 35-55 age bracket — the demographic that makes up most of the Roadman community — track cycling offers disproportionate benefits compared to younger riders.
The reason is biological. As you age, two things happen to your cycling physiology. Your aerobic engine declines gradually — VO2max drops roughly 1% per year after 30, and FTP follows a similar trajectory. But your neuromuscular qualities decline faster. Reaction time slows. Maximum cadence drops. Sprint power erodes. The ability to respond instantly to an acceleration in the bunch — the reactive quality that separates racers from riders — fades quicker than the steady-state engine.
Track cycling specifically targets the qualities that age attacks hardest. High-cadence pedalling, explosive accelerations, rapid tactical decision-making, sprint timing. These are all neuromuscular skills that respond to targeted training regardless of age. A 45-year-old who adds weekly track sessions will see a greater relative improvement in these areas than a 25-year-old, because the 45-year-old has a larger deficit to address and the neural adaptations do not hit the same age-related ceiling as aerobic ones.
There is also a psychological benefit. Masters riders who have been road cycling for years often fall into a comfort zone. The same routes, the same pace, the same position in the bunch. The track breaks that pattern. It is unfamiliar. It demands focus. It forces you to learn something new. And that novelty — the mental engagement of being a beginner again — has a motivational effect that spills over into the rest of your riding.
I have watched riders in their late forties start track cycling for the first time and within three months transform from back-of-the-bunch passengers into active, confident racers who contest finishes and make tactical moves. The fitness improvement was modest. The skill improvement was dramatic. The confidence improvement was everything.
Make the call
