And that rider would be wrong — because the Eastern Townships never give you a flat road to recover on.
One hundred and thirty-five kilometres through Quebec's rolling countryside. Approximately 1,800-2,200 metres of cumulative climbing across terrain that punches up and drops down every few hundred metres, all day, without pause. Vineyards, covered bridges, small Quebecois villages — it is really beautiful. But the beauty masks a course that accumulates the vertical gain of a mountain sportive through sheer repetition. You are always either climbing or descending. There is no flat. There is no coasting. And at 30-35 degrees with Quebec summer humidity, the terrain is only half the problem.
The gran fondo runs out of Bromont in the Eastern Townships, southeast of Montreal. It is one of Canada's biggest and most popular sportive events. Multiple route options — 55km, 90km, and the 135km main route — entry roughly CAD$150-200. The shorter routes are not consolation prizes. They are legitimate choices depending on your fitness and your goals, and I'll come back to that.
The good news: it is fixable. Every challenge this event throws at you — the cumulative climbing, the heat, the exposed wind across open farmland — responds to specific preparation. Twelve weeks of the right work, and you ride this with control instead of survival.

The Opening: Bromont and the First 25km
The rolling starts immediately out of Bromont. No flat warm-up section. Within the first five kilometres you're climbing short, punchy rises of 4-6 per cent, dropping into brief descents, and climbing again. Let me be really clear about this: the first 25km sets the tone for the day. Ride it 10-15 watts below what feels comfortable. Your legs are fresh and the rises feel easy. They will not feel easy six times over by km 90.
Mid-Route Rolling Farmland: km 25-80
This is the defining section. Fifty-five kilometres of open farmland with constant undulation and very little shelter from wind or sun. The climbs are typically 1-3km at 4-7 per cent — nothing dramatic, everything relentless. You crest one rise, descend briefly, and the next starts before you've recovered from the last.
The exposed farmland means wind. On a hot day the headwind sections feel like riding into a hair dryer. A solo rider punching into a 20km/h headwind on a rolling road is doing 25-30 per cent more work than the rider sitting second wheel in a group of six.
The Village Climbs: Punchy Ramps Through Quebecois Hamlets
Scattered through the route are short, sharp climbs through small villages — often 500 metres to 1km at 8-10 per cent. Each one individually is nothing. Stack twenty of them across 135km on tired legs in 33-degree heat, and they become the event's signature punch. The technique is rhythm, not power. Shift early, spin through at 75-80 RPM, sit down. Standing on every village ramp burns glycogen faster than the gradient demands.
The Back Third and Closing Kilometres: km 80-135
The back third crosses more open farmland before looping towards Bromont. By this point the day is hot, your bottles are running low, and the wind is constant. This is where riders who underfuelled at km 60 start to pay. The final 25km includes more rolling terrain — because of course it does — but the profile eases slightly. If you've paced correctly, this section is hard but controlled. If you haven't, it is a grind.

Here's where it gets really interesting: the W/kg number matters less here than at alpine events. A rider at 2.8 W/kg who can repeat 2-minute efforts at 90 per cent FTP fifty times without cracking will outperform a 3.2 W/kg rider who can only sustain power on long, steady climbs. 12-Week Training Plan Overview
Phase 1: Aerobic Foundation (Weeks 1-3)
Volume: 6-8 hours per week. Three to four rides, 80 per cent in Zone 2.
The aerobic base is everything for a rolling sportive. Long rides building from 2.5 to 3.5 hours on undulating terrain — not flat bike paths. If your local terrain is flat, add repeated 2-3 minute efforts at 80-85 per cent FTP every 10 minutes during your long ride to simulate the Eastern Townships rhythm.
Core work three times per week: planks (3x45 seconds), side planks (3x30 seconds per side), dead bugs (3x12 per side), and single-leg glute bridges (3x15 per side). Trunk stability on the bike is what keeps your power transfer efficient at hour five. These are not optional — you can go and do them this week.
Start gut training now. Practise eating 40-50g of carbohydrate per hour on every ride over two hours. Your gut needs weeks to adapt to race-day fuelling rates, and starting this in week 8 is too late.
Phase 2: Volume and Repeatability (Weeks 4-7)
Volume: 8-10 hours per week. Two quality sessions per week:
Session A — Roller simulation. After a 20-minute warm-up, ride 6-10 repetitions of 2-3 minutes at 88-92 per cent FTP with 1-2 minutes at 70 per cent FTP between each. The short recovery is deliberate — it replicates the course. Build from 6 reps in week 4 to 10 reps in week 7.
Session B — Sustained tempo. 2x25 minutes at 80-87 per cent FTP with 5 minutes easy between blocks.
Long ride climbs to 4-5 hours on rolling terrain. Include at least one group ride per week from week 5. Core work continues — increase plank holds to 60 seconds, add bird-dogs (3x10 per side). Gut training progresses to 50-60g of carbohydrate per hour on long rides.
Phase 3: Event Simulation (Weeks 8-10)
Volume: 10-12 hours per week.
The peak block. This is where the event-specific preparation lands.
Key addition: heat acclimatisation. Ride in the warmest part of the day for at least 3-4 rides per week. If the weather won't cooperate, add 30-40 minutes on the indoor trainer in a warm room twice a week. The body needs 10-14 days of regular heat exposure to adapt sweat rate and plasma volume.
Quality sessions intensify: roller simulation extends to 12-15 reps of 2-3 minutes at 88-92 per cent FTP with 90 seconds recovery. Long ride (5-6 hours) includes a 90-minute block of continuous rolling effort — no coasting, no freewheeling on descents, pedalling through everything.

Phase 4: Taper (Weeks 11-12)
Volume drops 40 per cent. Intensity stays sharp but brief.
Week 11: three rides. One with 4x3 minutes at 90 per cent FTP to keep the top end awake. Two easy spins of 60-90 minutes. Core work drops to twice a week.
Week 12: two easy rides of 45-60 minutes with 2x5-minute openers at 85 per cent FTP. Travel to Bromont. Spin the legs. Eat well. Sleep well. The fitness is banked.

Session 1: Eastern Townships Roller Simulation
The workhorse session for this event.
Warm up 20 minutes easy. Then ride 10x3 minutes at 88-92 per cent FTP with 90 seconds at 65-70 per cent FTP between each effort. Cool down 15 minutes easy.
The recovery is deliberately short. You should start each effort before you feel ready — that's the point. The Eastern Townships course does not wait for your heart rate to settle before the next rise begins. By rep 7 or 8, your legs are heavy and the wattage is hard to hold. That feeling is km 95 of the race. Train it.
If you ride outdoors, find a road with rolling terrain and use the natural climbs as your efforts. If you ride indoors, set ERG mode or use a structured workout with the same intervals.
Session 2: Heat Acclimatisation Block
Essential for a late-summer Quebec event.
Ride 60-90 minutes on the indoor trainer in a warm room — 28-32 degrees if possible. Close windows, add a light layer over your jersey. Ride at low Zone 2 for the first 30 minutes, then include 4x5 minutes at 80 per cent FTP with 3 minutes easy between.
The first session will feel awful. By the fourth or fifth session across two weeks, you'll notice you sweat earlier, your heart rate stays lower, and the effort feels more manageable. That's acclimatisation working. Drink 750ml minimum per hour and weigh yourself before and after. If you lose more than 2 per cent of bodyweight despite drinking, you need more fluid or more electrolytes.
Session 3: Race-Pace Dress Rehearsal
One session, once, three weeks before the event.
Ride 4-5 hours on rolling terrain at your target event pace. Eat exactly what you plan to eat on race day. Drink exactly what you plan to drink. Wear the same kit. This session answers three questions: can you hold your target pace for the duration? Does your nutrition plan sustain you? Does any of your kit cause problems at hour four that it didn't at hour one? Fix whatever needs fixing. You have two weeks left.
Nutrition Strategy
A 75kg rider at 2.8 W/kg on rolling terrain for 5.5 hours burns roughly 3,500-4,000 calories. You cannot replace all of that on the bike — aim to replace 40-50 per cent through on-bike fuelling, relying on glycogen stores and pre-race loading for the rest.
Carbohydrate targets. 60-80g per hour from the start. That's a gel every 25-30 minutes plus a bar every 45-60 minutes. Hydration in heat. This is where the Cantons-de-l'Est gets dangerous. Quebec summer humidity prevents sweat from evaporating efficiently, so your fluid losses accelerate. Let me break this down: at 33 degrees with high humidity, a 75kg rider can lose 1.5-2.0 litres of sweat per hour. Replacing even 75 per cent of that requires drinking to a schedule every 15 minutes — not sipping when you remember.
Pre-race nutrition. 2-3g of carbohydrate per kilogram of bodyweight, 3 hours before the start. A large bowl of porridge with banana and honey, plus toast with jam. Nothing experimental. Nothing you haven't eaten before a long ride.
Feed stations. Use them to refill bottles — do not rely on them for solid food. Carry your own gels and bars in your back pockets. You know what your stomach tolerates; the feed station's offering might not agree with you at km 90.
Equipment and Gear
Gearing. A compact crankset (50/34) with an 11-28 or 11-30 cassette handles every gradient on this course. You rarely sit in your lowest gear for more than 3-4 minutes, but you will shift into it hundreds of times across the day. Make sure your rear derailleur shifts cleanly under load — a missed shift on the twentieth climb when your legs are cooked is infuriating.
Tyres. 28mm is the sweet spot. The roads are paved but not all smooth, and the comfort advantage of a wider tyre across 135km of rolling terrain is measurable. Tubeless with sealant is ideal — a slow puncture on an exposed farmland section at km 100 is a long walk if you can't self-seal.
Clothing for heat. Light-coloured, well-ventilated jersey. Bib shorts with a quality chamois — you're in the saddle for 5+ hours with constant shifting of position. Sunscreen on arms, legs, face, and the back of the neck.
Hydration setup. Carry two full bottles minimum. If your frame fits a third cage behind the seat tube, use it. Running out of fluid between feed stations at 33 degrees is not a minor inconvenience — it is a DNF risk.
Race Day Pacing
Start conservative. The first 25km should feel easy. Not steady, not moderate — easy. The temptation to ride the early rises at tempo is strong because you're fresh, the atmosphere is electric, and the riders around you are pushing. Let them. You will see many of those riders again at km 100, and they will not be pushing.
Group riding strategy. Find a group riding at or slightly below your target pace within the first 15km and commit to it. Sit in, take short turns at the front, and draft on every rise. Solo riding across exposed farmland into a headwind costs 20-30 per cent more energy. If your group is slightly slower than your target, stay anyway — arriving at km 100 with energy in reserve is worth more than arriving 10 minutes earlier with nothing left.
Managing the rollers. Pace every climb by feel and power, not by the riders around you. Shift early, spin at 75-85 RPM, stay seated unless the gradient exceeds 8 per cent. On the descents, keep pedalling — soft pedalling at 60-70 per cent FTP maintains blood flow and keeps the legs from stiffening between efforts. Do not freewheel.
The final 30km. If you've paced correctly, the last 30km are hard but manageable. An extra gel at km 110 and a caffeine gel at km 115 sharpens focus for the close. Keep rotating in whatever group you're with. The finish in Bromont rewards patience, not heroics.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating 1,800m of rolling terrain like a flat ride. The cumulative vertical gain is equivalent to climbing a single 1,800m pass — but the rolling format is harder because you never settle into a climbing rhythm and never get extended recovery on descents. Train the rolling shape, not just the distance.
2. Ignoring heat preparation. Riders from cooler climates arrive in Quebec in late summer and discover 33 degrees with 70 per cent humidity for the first time at the start line. Heat acclimatisation takes 10-14 days of deliberate exposure. Starting this on the flight to Montreal is not a plan.
3. Underfuelling because short climbs don't feel hard. The individual climbs are short enough that they don't feel glycogen-depleting. But fifty of them do. Riders who skip fuelling because "it's not like I'm climbing an Alp" bonk at km 90 wondering what happened. Eat to schedule from km 0.
4. Riding solo across the open farmland. The exposed sections between villages are windy, hot, and demoralising alone. The energy cost of solo riding into a headwind on rolling terrain is brutal. Find a group. Stay in it. Take your turns but don't pull excessively. Draft is not optional on this course.
5. Choosing the 135km route when the 90km route is the right call. If your longest training ride is under 80km, or your W/kg is below 2.3, the 135km route is likely to end in a survival march from km 100 onwards. The 90km route covers the same beautiful terrain, presents the same rolling challenge, and lets you finish with something left. That is a better day on the bike, and it is a smarter decision.
Travel and Logistics
Getting to Bromont. Fly into Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL). Bromont is approximately 80km southeast of Montreal — about an hour's drive on the A10 autoroute. Car hire is the simplest option; there is no direct public transport to Bromont that works with event-day timing.
Accommodation. Bromont is a resort town with hotels, B&Bs, and Airbnb options. Book early — the event fills accommodation across the Eastern Townships, and the best options close to the start/finish sell out months ahead. Staying in Bromont itself avoids a race-morning drive, which matters when the start is early.
Language. The event is bilingual — French and English. Signage and briefings operate in both. If your French is rusty, you'll manage fine.
Entry cost. Approximately CAD$150-200 depending on the route and when you register. Early-bird registration is cheaper. The entry includes feed stations, mechanical support on the course, and the finisher's package.
The day before. Ride an easy 30-45 minutes to spin the legs and check the bike after travel. Eat a carbohydrate-rich dinner — nothing exotic, nothing you haven't eaten before. Lay out your kit, pin your number, charge your computer, and get to bed early. Quebec summers mean long daylight hours, so bring an eye mask if you're in a bright room.
Recovery Plan
On the finish line. Eat within 30 minutes — 1.0-1.2g of carbohydrate per kilogram of bodyweight plus 20-30g of protein. Rehydrate with electrolytes until your urine runs clear. If you rode in heat, this may take the rest of the day.
Days 1-3. Complete rest or a very easy 30-minute spin. The cumulative muscular damage from 135km of rolling terrain — thousands of micro-contractions from repeated short climbs — takes longer to clear than a single sustained climb of the same vertical gain.
Days 4-7. Easy riding only, 60-90 minutes in Zone 1. No intensity. The temptation to test the legs at day 5 is the enemy of full recovery.
Days 7-14. Gradual return to normal training. Re-introduce one quality session at day 10, and return to your regular programme by the end of week two.
