Liège-Bastogne-Liège is the oldest Monument in professional cycling — first raced in 1892, before the Tour de France existed, before tarmac covered most European roads. The amateur Challenge version follows substantially the same route through the Ardennes forests of Wallonia, and the 273km long course is one of the most demanding single-day sportives you can enter in Europe.
The distance alone sets it apart. Most mountain sportives sit between 150-180km. Liège asks for 273km — roughly 100km more than the Marmotte or the Etape. The climbing is not Alpine in character. There are no 17km cols, no sustained grinding at altitude. Instead, there are 20-plus côtes — short, vicious climbs of 1-2km at gradients that regularly touch 10-13% — separated by rolling forest roads that never quite let you recover. The Ardennes rhythm is: climb hard, descend fast, roll for 15 minutes, climb hard again. For nine to twelve hours.

The training emphasis, pacing approach, and fuelling demands are fundamentally different from a mountain event — and riders who prepare for Liège the way they would prepare for an Alpine sportive arrive at the Côte de la Redoute with the wrong fitness.
What Makes Liège-Bastogne-Liège Different
Three characteristics define this event, and all three must shape your training.
The côte rhythm. A côte in the Ardennes is not a col. The Côte de la Redoute is 2km at 8.9%. The Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons is 1.5km at 11%. The Côte de Saint-Nicolas is 1.2km at 13%. The Côte de Stockeu is 1km at 12.5%. These are short, steep, and brutal — pure power efforts lasting 3-8 minutes that spike your heart rate into Zone 5 and demand muscular force that sustained climbing does not.
But the problem is not any single côte. It is the accumulation. Twenty-plus of these across a day, each one slightly harder than the last because your legs have less to give. The Ardennes terrain between the côtes rolls constantly — 2-3% rises, short descents, false flats — and never offers the sustained flat recovery of a valley road. You are always partially recovering, never fully recovering. By kilometre 200, even a 5% gradient feels like a wall.
The distance. 273km is a different category of endurance challenge. A 170km sportive, ridden well, is 6-8 hours. A 273km sportive is 9-12 hours. The difference is not arithmetic — it is physiological. After 7-8 hours of riding, your gut function deteriorates, your glycogen stores are depleted regardless of fuelling strategy, fat oxidation becomes your primary fuel source at anything below threshold, and your sustained power drops 10-20% from fresh values. Training for 273km means training for the specific demands of hour 8, hour 9, hour 10 — where the fitness that matters is the fitness to keep eating, keep pedalling, and keep making power on steep côtes with nothing left in reserve.
Belgian spring weather. The event falls in late April. The Ardennes in April is unreliable. Cold rain, crosswinds, and temperatures that swing from 15 degrees in sunshine to 5 degrees in a shower are standard. A wet, cold day turns the distance from a challenge into a genuine survival exercise. Riders who underdress, who do not pack rain protection, who do not fuel properly in the cold — they are the riders who abandon at kilometre 180 not because their legs failed but because their hands stopped working or their core temperature dropped too low to continue.
Fitness Benchmarks
Liège is less about power-to-weight than mountain events. A rider with moderate W/kg but exceptional endurance and fuelling discipline will finish ahead of a lighter, more powerful rider who cracks at kilometre 220.

More than raw W/kg, three metrics predict your day:

6-hour power as a percentage of FTP. If you can hold 72-78% of FTP across 6 hours, the distance is manageable. If you drop below 65%, the final 80km becomes a death march. The TSS calculator helps frame the total load of a 273km day — expect 350-450 TSS depending on pace and terrain.

3-minute power. The côtes demand repeated 3-6 minute efforts at 110-130% FTP. If your 3-minute power is strong relative to your FTP, the côtes are hard but recoverable. Fuelling capacity. Can you absorb 80-100g of carbs per hour for 10 hours straight? This is a trainable skill that matters more at 273km than at any shorter distance.
The 16-Week Training Structure
This plan targets the late-April event date. The 16-week block starts in early January — winter training that builds into spring preparation. The emphasis throughout is endurance first, repeated efforts second. The inverse — training hard and short — builds the wrong fitness for Liège.
Phase 1: Endurance Base (Weeks 1-6)
Volume: 9-12 hours/week. Four to five rides. 80% in Zone 2.
The specific demand of Liège is time in the saddle. The base phase builds that capacity with progressive long rides that teach your body to burn fat efficiently, maintain form for extended periods, and tolerate the saddle comfort challenges that appear after hour five.
Weekly structure:
- 3-4 Zone 2 rides (1-2 hours midweek, longer on weekends)
- 1 quality session: sweet spot intervals, 2x20 minutes at 88-93% FTP
- 1 long ride building from 3 hours (week 1) to 5 hours (week 6), with rolling terrain preferred over flat
- 1-2 strength sessions: single-leg press, lunges, core, hip stability — build the posterior chain strength that supports 10-hour days
Key metric: By week 6, a 5-hour ride on rolling terrain should feel sustainable, not heroic. If you finish a 5-hour ride destroyed, the distance of Liège will break you regardless of your power numbers. Track your training load across this block — CTL should be climbing 3-5 points per week. If it is flat by week 4, the volume is too low.
Cold-weather riding. If your base phase falls in January-February, do not skip outdoor rides entirely. Turbo sessions build cardiovascular fitness but they do not build the cold tolerance, the bike handling, or the comfort-management skills you need for 10 hours in Belgian spring weather. At least one long ride per week should be outdoors, dressed properly, in whatever conditions your geography provides.
Phase 2: Build (Weeks 7-12)
Volume: 11-15 hours/week. The côte-specific work begins.
This is where the training diverges from a standard mountain-sportive plan. You are not building sustained climbing power — you are building repeated short-burst power on top of deep endurance. Two quality sessions per week, long rides extending to 6-7 hours, and at least two sessions per week that specifically replicate the côte rhythm.
Weekly structure:
- 2 quality sessions (see below)
- 2-3 Zone 2 rides
- 1 long ride building to 6-7 hours with rolling terrain and short steep hills
- 1 maintenance strength session
Quality session 1 — côte simulation intervals: Find a hill that takes 3-5 minutes at a hard effort. Ride it 8-12 times with 5-7 minutes of rolling recovery between efforts. The recovery should be active — not coasting, not stopped, but riding at Zone 2 on undulating terrain. This replicates the Ardennes rhythm: hard effort, partial recovery, hard effort again.
Build from 8 reps in week 7 to 12 reps by week 11. Use the interval builder to structure the progressions and target zones.
If you live somewhere flat, overgeared standing starts and bridge efforts on flyovers work as substitutes. Or use a turbo with gradient simulation — set it to 12% for 4 minutes, recover at 2% for 5 minutes, repeat.
Quality session 2 — threshold endurance. 3x15 minutes at 92-97% FTP, progressing to 2x25 minutes. This is not the workhorse session — the côte intervals are. But sustained threshold capacity matters for the 15-20km rolling sections between côtes where you need to maintain pace in a group or against the clock.
The ultra-long ride. At least three times in the build phase, ride 6-7 hours on rolling terrain. Twice, extend this to 200km+ if your schedule allows. These rides must include full race-day fuelling — 80-100g of carbs per hour, practised from start to finish. The goal is not intensity. It is time, distance, and the specific physiological adaptations that happen beyond hour five: fat oxidation improvement, gut tolerance at high carb intake, saddle tolerance, and the mental capacity to keep riding when the novelty has long worn off.
Back-to-back weekends. Once per month in the build phase, ride a 5-6 hour Saturday followed by a 3-4 hour Sunday. Arriving at Sunday's ride with tired legs teaches your body the exact skill Liège demands at kilometre 200 — making power when the legs say no.
Phase 3: Taper (Weeks 13-16)
Weeks 13-14: Volume holds at 10-12 hours. One final long ride of 5-6 hours with côte intervals embedded. This is the last big training stimulus.
Weeks 15-16: Volume drops 30-40% in week 15, 50% in week 16. Keep the côte intervals in but reduce the volume — 6x3 minutes rather than 12. One short threshold session (2x10 minutes). The goal is leg speed and responsiveness, not fitness building.
A proper taper for a 273km event is worth more than it is for a 170km event, because the fatigue you are shedding has been accumulating across months of long-ride training. Trust the reduction. Your legs will feel twitchy and restless in the final week. That is the taper working.
Côte-by-Côte: The Ones That Matter
The course includes 20-plus côtes. You do not need to memorise all of them. But the final 50km contains the climbs that define the day — the ones the professionals attack on and the ones where tired amateurs crack.
Côte de Stockeu (1km at 12.5%)
This one arrives in the middle section of the course, not the finale, but its gradient is a warning shot. 12.5% for a kilometre is steep enough to demand standing on the pedals for most amateurs. Ride it at 85-90% of your 3-minute power, stay seated as long as possible, and use it as a gauge: if Stockeu feels comfortable, your pacing is correct. If it feels desperate, you are already too deep.
Côte de la Redoute (2km at 8.9%)
The most famous côte on the course. The Redoute arrives with roughly 40-50km remaining and it is where the professionals launch the decisive attacks. For amateurs, it is the first of the final three côtes that determine whether your last hour is riding or surviving.
Target effort: 88-92% FTP. The Redoute is longer than most côtes — 2km gives you time to settle into an effort rather than sprinting from the bottom. The gradient is consistently steep without savage ramps. Pace it like a short threshold effort, not a sprint. If you have fuelled properly and paced the earlier côtes conservatively, the Redoute is hard but manageable.
Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons (1.5km at 11%)
Steeper than the Redoute and arriving later, the Roche-aux-Faucons is where honest pacing across the first 230km pays off. 11% for 1.5km is a 4-5 minute effort for most amateurs — long enough to hurt, short enough that the top is always visible if you look up.
Target effort: 85-90% FTP. Do not attack this côte. Ride it steadily. The Saint-Nicolas is still ahead and it is steeper. Riders who empty themselves on the Roche-aux-Faucons crawl up the Saint-Nicolas. Riders who control themselves here ride the Saint-Nicolas.
Côte de Saint-Nicolas (1.2km at 13%)
The steepest of the final côtes and the last significant climb before the finish in Liège. 13% average gradient on legs that have ridden 260km. This is where the event is won and lost for amateurs — not on time, but on the difference between riding it and walking it.
Target effort: whatever you have left, in the saddle if possible. Standing is tempting on 13% after 260km, but standing uses more energy per pedal stroke and your reserves are empty. Stay seated, drop to your lowest gear, spin 55-65 RPM if necessary, and grind to the top. It is 1.2km. It takes 5-7 minutes. You have ridden 260km to get here. Five more minutes of suffering is the price of the finish.
Fuelling: The 10-Hour Problem
Fuelling for 273km is a different category of nutritional challenge. You are riding through what would normally be breakfast, lunch, and a significant portion of dinner. A 75kg rider finishing in 10 hours burns in the region of 6,000-8,000 kcal. You cannot replace all of that on the bike. What you can do is close the gap enough that your glycogen stores and fat oxidation cover the rest without cracking.
Target: 80-100g of carbohydrate per hour from kilometre one. Higher than a mountain event because the lower average intensity allows better gut absorption, and because the day is longer. Use the fuelling calculator to plan exact quantities.
Hourly plan:

The café stop question. Some riders stop at a café or feed station for 15-20 minutes to eat real food — a sandwich, soup, something hot. On a 273km day, this is legitimate strategy, not weakness. The time cost is 15 minutes. The energy gained from proper solid food and a mental reset can be worth 30 minutes of better riding across the final 80km. If you know you struggle to eat on the bike after hour six, plan a proper food stop around kilometre 160-180.
Cold-weather fuelling. April in the Ardennes can be cold, and cold suppresses appetite. Riders eat less in the cold than in warm conditions — this is well documented. Force the fuelling schedule even when you are not hungry. Set a timer if necessary. By the time you feel hungry at kilometre 200, you are already 45-60 minutes behind on nutrition and the deficit may be unrecoverable.
Hydration. Less aggressive than a summer event — 400-600ml per hour in cool conditions, more if it is unexpectedly warm. Sodium still matters: 500-1,000mg per litre. Cold temperatures blunt the thirst response the same way they blunt hunger. Drink to schedule, not to thirst.
Pre-race. 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight the day before. Breakfast 3-4 hours before the start: 2-3g/kg of carbs, moderate protein, low fibre, low fat. The same protocol as any endurance event, but the consequences of getting it wrong at 273km are magnified — you simply cannot make up a pre-race fuelling deficit across 10 hours of riding.
Weather Preparation
Belgian spring weather deserves its own section because it can turn a hard sportive into a genuine safety problem.
Baseline expectation. Late April in the Ardennes means temperatures of 8-15 degrees Celsius, with wind chill potentially dropping below 5 degrees on exposed sections. Rain probability is roughly 50% on any given day. The Ardennes forests provide some shelter from wind but they are also damp and shaded — a wet forest road at 7 degrees feels colder than an exposed hillside at 10.
What to wear. Start with a thermal base layer, arm warmers, and a rain-resistant gilet as minimum. Pack a lightweight rain jacket — and wear it before you are cold, not after. Full-length gloves, not mitts, if the forecast suggests rain or temperatures below 10 degrees. Shoe covers if below 8 degrees. Use the wind chill calculator to translate the forecast into actual feels-like temperatures.
The hypothermia risk. On a 10-hour day in wet, cold conditions, core temperature management becomes a survival issue, not just a comfort issue. Riders who are wet and cold at kilometre 180 with 90km still to ride are in a difficult position. Stopping to warm up at a café or feed station is the right call — riding yourself into clinical hypothermia because you do not want to lose time is the wrong call.
If it is dry and warm. Occasionally April delivers a perfect day — 18 degrees, sunshine, dry roads. Enjoy it. But still carry a gilet because the Ardennes can produce localised showers that appear from nowhere and vanish 20 minutes later.
Distance Management: The 273km Mindset
The biggest training error for Liège is thinking of it as a hard sportive. It is not a hard sportive. It is a very, very long one. The distinction matters because it changes how you pace, how you eat, how you think about effort, and what you train for.
Pace for hour 10, not hour 3. The effort that feels sustainable at kilometre 80 is not the effort that is sustainable at kilometre 250. Drop your average power target by 5-10% compared to what you would ride in a 170km event. The côtes will spike your power regardless — what matters is the effort between them. If you are riding the rolling sections at 75% FTP because you feel good at kilometre 60, you are 10 watts too high for what the final third demands. Target 65-70% FTP between côtes.
Break the day into thirds. Kilometres 1-90 are warm-up territory. Stay in the group, eat aggressively, ride well within yourself. Kilometres 90-180 are the working section — côtes arrive more frequently, the terrain intensifies, and fatigue begins to accumulate. Kilometres 180-273 are the truth. Your fuelling, pacing, and preparation from the first 180km either carry you through the final côtes or they do not.
Social riding helps. 273km alone is an endurance test and a psychological challenge. In a group, the distance passes differently. Draft where you can. Chat where you can. Share food. The mental load of solo 273km riding is significantly higher than riding with company — if you can find a group riding your pace, stay with them.

Is this harder than an Alpine sportive? Different. The climbing is less sustained, the altitude is negligible, and the descents are shorter. But the distance is significantly longer, the weather is less predictable, and the repeated côte format is physically and mentally distinct from sustained Alpine climbing. Most riders find the final 50km of Liège harder than the final 50km of a mountain event — not because the climbing is worse, but because the accumulated fatigue from 220km of constant up-down riding is relentless.
How many calories do I actually need? A 75kg rider finishing in 10 hours burns roughly 6,000-8,000 kcal. Your on-bike target is 80-100g of carbs per hour — 800-1,000g of carbohydrate across the day from drink mix, gels, bars, and solid food. You will not replace all the calories burned. The goal is to close the gap enough that your glycogen and fat oxidation cover the rest without leaving you empty for the final côtes.
Can I do this on a time-trial bike or aero setup? No. The côtes demand a proper climbing position and the descents through Ardennes forests on narrow roads demand nimble handling. A standard road setup with comfortable geometry, a compact chainset, and a 30-32 tooth cassette is the correct choice. Aero gains from a TT position are irrelevant across 273km of rolling terrain where you spend a third of the day climbing at 10km/h.
What if I have never ridden 273km before? Build to it progressively. By the end of the build phase, you should have completed at least two rides of 200km+ and one ride of 220km+. If you arrive at the event having never ridden beyond 180km in training, the final 90km will introduce physiological and psychological challenges you have not practised managing. The ultra-long training rides are not optional for this event — they are the most important sessions in the plan.
