What Makes Flanders Different from Every Other Sportive

Flanders tests something else entirely — the ability to produce repeated short maximal efforts on unpredictable surfaces while maintaining forward momentum in between.
The cobbled bergs. There are roughly 18 bergs on the long route, and the hardest of them — Koppenberg, Paterberg, Oude Kwaremont, Kanarieberg — require efforts of 30 seconds to 3 minutes at 130-150% of your FTP. That is VO2max to anaerobic territory, on cobbles, where traction is uncertain and cadence drops. These are not climbs you ride at tempo. They are efforts you attack, absorb the pain, and recover from on the other side.
The surface. Cobblestones change the physics of cycling. Every stone is a micro-impact that travels through your tyres, wheels, handlebars, and saddle into your body. Over 235km, those impacts accumulate into a deep fatigue that has nothing to do with aerobic fitness. Your grip weakens. Your lower back tightens. Your neck locks up. Riders who have never ridden cobbles underestimate this completely — it is a full-body endurance event, not just a leg endurance event.
The weather. Early April in Belgium means rain probability above 60%, temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius, and crosswinds that sweep across flat farmland with nothing to break them. The wind chill on a wet day at 35kph can push perceived temperature below freezing. If your longest training rides have been on dry roads in mild conditions, you are not ready for Flanders.
The duration. At 235km, this is a 7-10 hour day. The cobbled bergs get all the attention, but the truth is that 200km of the course is on regular tarmac — long stretches of flat-to-rolling Belgian roads where wind management, group riding, and steady tempo determine how much you have left when the Koppenberg appears at kilometre 175.
The Key Bergs: Know What You Are Facing
Koppenberg (600m, 22% max, cobbles)
The Koppenberg is the defining berg. It is short — barely 600 metres — but the combination of 22% gradient and rough cobbles makes it one of the hardest efforts in amateur cycling. The professional peloton has been forced to walk here. You might be too, and that is fine — but the goal is to ride it.
The cobbles are irregular and worn. Traction is inconsistent, especially when wet. If you lose momentum in the steepest section, restarting on a 22% cobbled gradient is almost impossible. The line choice matters: the gutters are smoother than the crown of the road, but they are narrower and often contain debris. Pick your line before you enter and commit to it.
Power demand: 130-150% FTP for 60-90 seconds. You will be out of the saddle for most of it, grinding a big gear at 50-65 RPM with your weight over the rear wheel for traction. Paterberg (360m, 20% max, cobbles)
Shorter than the Koppenberg but nearly as steep. The cobbles are slightly better than the Koppenberg but the gradient is relentless. Same technique applies: commit to a line, stay seated as long as possible for traction, shift to standing only when cadence drops below 55 RPM.
Oude Kwaremont (2.2km, 11% average, cobbles)
The longest cobbled berg on the course and a different kind of hard. Where the Koppenberg is a 90-second explosion, the Kwaremont is a 6-8 minute sustained effort on cobbles. The gradient is manageable — 11% is steep but rideable — but the surface vibration over 2.2km drains your energy reserves far faster than a smooth climb of equal gradient. Pacing matters here. The Flanders sportive does not reward the same fitness profile as a mountain sportive. A high W/kg is less important than the ability to produce repeated short-power efforts and recover between them.

The 1-minute and 5-second numbers matter because the bergs demand it. A rider with a 3.5 W/kg FTP but poor 1-minute power will struggle on the Koppenberg more than a rider with 2.8 W/kg FTP who can spike to 7 W/kg for 90 seconds.
Check your FTP zones and build the training plan around your weaknesses. If your aerobic base is strong but your short power is poor, weight the build phase toward neuromuscular work. If your sprint is fine but you fade after four hours, the base phase needs more volume.
The 12-Week Training Structure
This plan assumes you are already riding 8-10 hours per week with a reasonable aerobic base. If you are starting from lower fitness, add 4-6 weeks of Zone 2 foundation before beginning.
Phase 1: Base (Weeks 1-4)
Volume: 8-12 hours per week. Four to five rides. 80% in Zone 2.
The base phase for a cobbled sportive looks similar to any endurance build — long rides, aerobic volume, steady progression. The difference is the inclusion of neuromuscular work from week one. Cobbled bergs are not something you can prepare for with pure aerobic fitness. The muscular recruitment pattern — high torque, low cadence, unstable surface — needs specific neural adaptation.
Weekly structure:
- 3-4 Zone 2 rides (1-2 hours midweek, building long ride on weekends)
- 1 quality session: sweet spot work, 2x20 minutes at 88-93% FTP
- 1 long ride building from 3 hours to 4.5 hours
- Include 4-6 short steep efforts (20-30 seconds) in the long ride on any available gradient — car park ramps, overpasses, short steep hills
- 1-2 gym sessions: single-leg press, lunges, core stability, grip strength work (farmer carries with dumbbells, dead hangs)
Grip strength note. Your hands take extraordinary punishment on cobbles. A 235km day on rough roads leaves many riders with forearm cramps and numb fingers by kilometre 180. Start training grip endurance now — farmer carries, dead hangs from a pull-up bar, and deliberate practice riding on rough surfaces with a relaxed grip. This is not glamorous training. It matters.
Key metric: By week 4, your long ride should be 4.5 hours with comfortable aerobic intensity. If you are racing your long ride or arriving home emptied, the volume is too high or the intensity is wrong.
Phase 2: Build (Weeks 5-10)
Volume: 10-14 hours per week. This is where the training starts looking like the event.
Two quality sessions per week, long rides building to 5-6 hours, and at least two sessions on rough surfaces if you can access them.
Weekly structure:

- 2-3 Zone 2 rides
- 1 long ride building to 5-6 hours with 1,000-1,500m of climbing
- 1 gym session (maintenance — reduce from base phase)
Quality session 1 — berg simulation: After a 20-minute warm-up, ride 8-12 repetitions of a short steep climb (30 seconds to 2 minutes at 130-150% FTP, 3-5 minutes recovery between efforts). If you have access to a 15-20% gradient, use it. If not, use a moderate gradient in a big gear to simulate the torque demand. This is the key session. The Koppenberg and Paterberg are not threshold efforts — they are anaerobic bursts followed by recovery, repeated across the day. Your body must learn to clear the lactate and go again.
Quality session 2 — tempo with surges: 60-90 minutes at 75-85% FTP with 6-8 seated surges to 120-130% FTP for 30-45 seconds every 8-10 minutes. This simulates the rhythm of the Flanders course — long stretches of tempo riding punctuated by violent changes in effort when a berg appears. The surges should be seated and in a big gear, not standing sprints. The cobbled bergs are grinding efforts, not accelerations.
Rough surface sessions: If you have access to cobbled streets, farm tracks, gravel paths, or any broken surface, ride them regularly. One session every two weeks where you cover 30-60 minutes on rough surfaces at moderate intensity teaches your body the specific fatigue pattern — the grip tension, the lower back load, the neck strain — that cobbles produce. If you have no access to rough surfaces, ride washboard roads or cattle grids repeatedly. It is not the same, but it is better than nothing.
The stacked weekend: At least twice in the build phase, ride a 4-5 hour Saturday with berg efforts followed by a 3-4 hour Sunday at steady tempo. The Flanders sportive is an all-day effort and your body needs to know what sustained fatigue feels like on tired legs.
Track your training stress score across the build. CTL should be climbing 3-5 points per week. If it flatlines, the training stimulus is insufficient.
Phase 3: Taper (Weeks 11-12)
Volume drops 30-40% in week 11, 50% in week 12. Keep short sharp efforts to maintain neuromuscular responsiveness — 4-6 berg simulation efforts of 30-60 seconds at 140% FTP with full recovery. Remove volume, not intensity. The taper sheds fatigue. The short efforts keep the top end alive.
One ride in week 11 should be 3-4 hours at aerobic pace with 4-5 short efforts to confirm the legs are sharp. Week 12 is openers only — two short rides of 60-90 minutes with a handful of efforts. Rest. Eat. Sleep.
Cobble Technique: The Skills That Save Your Legs
Power and fitness get you to the bergs. Technique gets you over them.
Line choice
On cobbled bergs, the smoothest line is rarely the most obvious one. The gutters are often smoother than the crown but narrower and riskier. The crown is rougher but gives you more room. On wider cobbled roads, there is sometimes a strip of worn-smooth stones that hundreds of thousands of wheels have polished over decades — find it and hold it. On narrow bergs like the Koppenberg, pick the best line before you enter because changing mid-climb on a 22% cobbled gradient risks losing momentum entirely.
In the sportive, with 16,000 riders, line choice is also a traffic problem. Position yourself well before each berg. Being stuck behind a walking rider on the Koppenberg means you walk too — there is no room to pass on the steep cobbled section.
Cadence and power delivery
Cobbles demand smooth power delivery. Stomping on the pedals with sudden torque spikes causes the rear wheel to skip on wet cobbles. Aim for a seated, grinding style at 55-70 RPM with even pressure through the entire pedal stroke. Standing is necessary on the steepest pitches, but shift your weight rearward to keep the rear tyre loaded.
Hand position and grip
Ride cobbles on the hoods or the drops — never on the tops. The drops give maximum control but your hands fatigue faster. The hoods give slightly less control but more comfort. Alternate during the day. The critical instruction is to relax your grip. White-knuckle gripping the bars for 235km leads to forearm cramps, numb fingers, and wasted energy. Hold the bars firmly enough to control the bike, no more. Bend your elbows to absorb vibration through your arms, not your shoulders.
Tyre pressure
This is one of the largest free performance gains available. Most amateurs run their tyres too hard for cobbles. On a tubeless setup with 28-32mm tyres, drop to 5.5-6.5 bar (80-95 PSI) for cobbled sections. The compliance gain is significant — lower pressure allows the tyre to deform around the cobble rather than bouncing off it. Every bounce is wasted energy. Every bounce is impact your body absorbs. The difference between 7 bar and 6 bar over 235km of mixed surface is measurable in both comfort and speed.
If you are running tubes, go no lower than 6 bar to avoid pinch flats. Consider switching to tubeless before the event — it is the single biggest equipment upgrade for cobbled riding.
Gearing
The Koppenberg at 22% gradient on cobbles is the gearing challenge. Most riders need to be at 55-65 RPM minimum to maintain traction and forward momentum. Below 50 RPM on wet cobbles, you are in survival mode and one mistake away from stopping.
Run a compact crankset (50/34). On the rear, a 30-tooth cassette is the minimum for the Koppenberg. A 34-tooth is better insurance and the weight penalty is irrelevant over 235km.
Here is the practical calculation. A 75kg rider on the Koppenberg (22% gradient) at 34x30 and 60 RPM produces roughly 380 watts and travels at 5.5kph. At 34x28, the same cadence requires roughly 410 watts. Those 30 watts matter at kilometre 175 when the Koppenberg arrives after six hours of riding. Test your gearing in training. Swap the cassette by week 4 at the latest and train on the gearing you will race. Leg speed on a 34x30 at 60 RPM on a steep gradient is a specific neuromuscular pattern that needs adaptation.
Fuelling for a Cold, Long Day
Fuelling the Flanders sportive is different from fuelling an Alpine event. The cold suppresses appetite. The effort pattern — sustained tempo punctuated by anaerobic bursts — burns through glycogen faster than steady-state riding. And the rough surfaces make drinking from a bottle harder than on smooth roads.
Target: 60-80g of carbohydrate per hour from kilometre one. The lower end of the range reflects the cold-weather reality that your gut is slightly less efficient in the cold. Use the fuelling calculator to plan exact quantities.
Drink mix is your primary fuel source. On cobbles, unwrapping a bar or opening a gel is harder than on smooth roads. Liquid calories in the bottle require no hands, no unwrapping, no fumbling. Mix your bottles to 40-50g of carbohydrate per 500ml and aim for one bottle per hour. Top up with gels in the smooth sections between bergs.

Hydration in cold conditions. The temptation in 8-degree weather is to drink less. Resist it. You are still sweating, especially during berg efforts. 500-600ml per hour is the floor. Pre-race. The same framework applies: 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight the day before. Breakfast 3 hours before the start — 2-3g/kg of carbs, moderate protein, low fibre. Warm food if possible. Starting a 235km ride in 7-degree rain on an empty stomach is a mistake that compounds across every hour.
Weather Preparation
Belgium in early April is not kind. The average conditions across the last decade of We Ride Flanders editions:

- Rain: more than 60% of editions have had rain at some point
- Wind: 15-30kph, predominantly southwest, with exposed crosswind sections on the flat farmland between bergs
Clothing. Start in a thermal base layer, long-sleeve jersey or short-sleeve jersey with arm warmers, bib shorts with a good chamois, shoe covers, and a gilet. Pack a lightweight rain jacket. Overshoes are mandatory if rain is forecast — cold wet feet at hour five are a morale problem that spirals into a performance problem.
Train in bad weather. This sounds simple. Most riders ignore it. If your longest training rides have been on dry roads above 15 degrees, your first experience of 8 degrees and rain should not be at the Flanders start line. Do at least four training rides in cold or wet conditions during the build phase. Your body adapts — vasoconstriction improves, core temperature management gets more efficient, and critically, you learn what clothing works and what does not before race day.
Wind management. The flat sections between bergs are where wind costs energy. Ride in a group whenever possible. Take short pulls at the front and rotate. If you are alone, stay in the drops and keep your effort at 70-80% FTP — fighting a headwind at threshold between bergs is how riders arrive at the Koppenberg with nothing left. Race Day: Berg-by-Berg Pacing
The mistake most riders make in Flanders is racing the first 100km too hard. The bergs arrive throughout the route, but the hardest ones — Koppenberg, Paterberg, Oude Kwaremont — are in the second half. If you have spent too many matches in the first half, those final bergs break you.
Kilometres 1-80: Conservation. Ride at 65-75% FTP. Stay in a group. Eat and drink consistently. The early bergs are shorter and less severe — ride them at controlled intensity, 110-120% FTP maximum. Do not race. Do not chase wheels up every ramp. Your job in the first 80km is to arrive at the harder bergs with full glycogen stores and fresh legs.
Kilometres 80-160: Controlled commitment. The middle bergs are where the race begins. Ride them at 120-140% FTP. Recover fully between each one — drop to Zone 1-2 on the flat sections, eat, drink. Position yourself well before each berg to avoid traffic jams.
Kilometres 160-235: Survival with purpose. The Koppenberg, Paterberg, and Oude Kwaremont live here. You are deep into the day. Give each berg what you have but not more than you have. If 130% FTP is all you can produce on the Koppenberg at kilometre 175, that is your effort. Trying to match the power you produced at kilometre 50 is how riders crack and walk.
The final 30km after the last berg are flat-to-rolling roads into Oudenaarde. Keep eating. Keep drinking. Maintain 65-70% FTP. Cross the line knowing you rode every berg on the course — that is the point of Flanders.
