  • Never point a pressure washer at your bearings. A bucket of warm soapy water and a sponge does the job without forcing water past the seals. I have watched riders wreck a headset in a single wash.
  • A contaminated drivetrain costs you three to five watts and accelerates wear on everything it touches. A ten-minute clean after wet rides pays for itself in component life.

Those bikes are clean because the mechanics know that a clean bike is a bike they can see — see the hairline crack forming on a chainstay, see the cable housing that's starting to fray, see the bearing seal that's weeping grease. A dirty bike hides all of that.

And there's the performance angle too. A contaminated drivetrain — that black paste you get when road grit mixes with chain lube and moisture — is an abrasive compound. It grinds into rollers, cassette teeth, and chainring surfaces every time you turn the pedals. It costs you watts. It costs you component life. And it costs you money, because a worn cassette and chain are not cheap to replace.

The good news is that keeping your bike clean does not require a workshop, a professional-grade setup, or an hour of your weekend. It requires a bucket, a few products, some brushes, and a bit of routine. Here's the thing nobody tells you though — you need two different cleaning routines, not one. A quick clean after rides and a periodic deep clean. They serve different purposes, they take different amounts of time, and most cyclists either only do one or conflate the two.

Why a clean bike matters more than you think

The friction argument alone makes the case. Zero Friction Cycling's testing — the same data we reference in the drivetrain efficiency guide — consistently shows that a contaminated chain costs 3-5 watts compared to a clean, properly lubricated one. At 200 watts of rider output, that's the difference between 2-3% of your total power going into grinding paste instead of forward motion.

But friction is only part of it. A clean bike also:

  • Shifts better. Grit in the cassette and on the derailleur pulleys causes sluggish, imprecise shifting. Clean components snap between gears the way they did when they were new.
  • Brakes better. Contaminated rim brake tracks or disc rotors reduce stopping power and cause noise. A squealing disc brake is almost always a contamination problem.
  • Lasts longer. Drivetrain components — chain, cassette, chainrings — wear at a rate directly proportional to how much abrasive contamination sits on them. A rider who cleans regularly will get 30-50% more life from a cassette than one who doesn't.
  • Tells you things. Every time you clean your bike, you're running your hands and eyes over every surface. You'll catch loose bolts, cracked components, worn tyres, and failing cables before they become a ride-ending problem. Or worse, a crash.

This last point is underrated. A clean bike is an inspected bike. Professional mechanics know this instinctively — the cleaning ritual is also the inspection ritual. They happen at the same time, and they're inseparable.

What you need: products and tools

You don't need much. The cycling industry sells an enormous range of cleaning products, many of which are redundant. Here's the list that actually matters.

The essentials

  • Bike-specific wash. Muc-Off Bike Cleaner, Finish Line Super Bike Wash, or a mild washing-up liquid diluted in warm water. Any of these work. A dedicated bike wash is slightly better because it's formulated to be safe on anodised aluminium, carbon fibre, and decals — but dilute washing-up liquid is what many professional mechanics use for the frame and it's fine.
  • Bike-specific degreaser. This is different from the wash. Degreaser is for the drivetrain only — chain, cassette, chainrings, jockey wheels. Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner, Finish Line Speed Degreaser, or Park Tool CB-4 all do the job well. Do not use general household degreasers — some contain solvents that damage seals and paint.
  • Chain lubricant. Matched to your conditions. Wet lube for winter and wet weather (thicker, more water-resistant, attracts more dirt). Dry lube for summer and dry conditions (thinner, cleaner, washes off faster in rain).   • Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher). For disc brake rotors and pads. Nothing else should touch your rotors. No bike wash, no degreaser, no WD-40, nothing with any oil base whatsoever.
  • A set of brushes. You need at least three: a stiff-bristled brush for the cassette and chainrings, a softer brush for the frame and wheels, and a small brush (an old toothbrush is perfect) for the jockey wheels and tight spaces around the derailleur. A dedicated cassette brush with splayed bristles that slot between the cogs is worth the few quid it costs.
  • Sponge. A large car-wash sponge. Nothing fancy.
  • Bucket. Or two — one for soapy water, one for rinsing.
  • Clean rags or a chamois. For drying. Old towels work. Microfibre is better because it absorbs more and doesn't leave fibres on the frame.

Nice to have

  • Chain cleaning device. Those clip-on gadgets with rotating brushes that you fill with degreaser and pedal the chain through. Park Tool CM-5.3 is the most common. They work, but they're not essential — a rag and a brush do the same job.
  • Bike workstand. Holds the bike at working height and lets you rotate the cranks freely. Makes every cleaning job faster and easier on your back. If you're doing this regularly, it's a worthwhile investment.
  • Track pump with a gauge. Not a cleaning tool, but while you're there — check your tyres every wash. It takes 10 seconds and it's one of the most impactful things you can do for ride quality.

That's it. Everything else is optional. The products in the essential list will cost you roughly $40-60 total and last months.

The 10-minute quick clean

This is the one you do after every wet ride, every dirty ride, every ride where you can see grime on the chain or feel grit in the drivetrain. In summer on dry roads, you can get away with less — a wipe-down and a drop of lube. But the moment water, mud, or road spray is involved, this is the baseline.

The whole thing takes 10-15 minutes once you've done it a few times. Here's the process.

Step 1: Rinse

Get the worst of the road grime off before you start scrubbing. A garden hose on low pressure is ideal. A bucket of water poured over the frame works too.

Here's where it gets really important. Never use a high-pressure washer pointed directly at the bike. Not at the bearings, not at the bottom bracket, not at the headset, not at the hub seals. High-pressure water forces past the seals and into the bearings, pushing out the grease and replacing it with water. You won't notice the damage immediately. You'll notice it in six weeks when your bottom bracket starts creaking and your hubs feel rough.

If you must use a pressure washer — some people only have access to one at a petrol station or bike park — stand well back, use the widest nozzle, and never direct the jet at any bearing or seal point. Low pressure from a distance, not a focused blast from a foot away.

A gentle rinse to shift the surface mud and grit. That's all this step is.

Step 2: Soapy wash

Fill a bucket with warm water and add bike wash or a squirt of washing-up liquid. Dip your sponge and work from the top of the bike down. Handlebars, stem, top tube, down tube, seat tube, seatpost, saddle. Then the fork, then the stays.

Work methodically. Don't scrub aggressively on carbon fibre — you don't need to. The soap lifts the dirt. Let the product do the work.

For the wheels, use the sponge on the tyres and rim sidewalls. If you're on rim brakes, pay attention to the brake track — the flat surface where the brake pad contacts the rim. Embedded grit in the brake track causes rim wear and squealing.

Step 3: Quick drivetrain wipe

For a quick clean, you're not doing a full degrease. You're removing the surface contamination and re-lubing.

Hold a clean rag around the chain and backpedal through 20-30 revolutions. The rag picks up the dirty lube and surface grit. Rotate the rag to a clean section and repeat until it's coming away reasonably clean.

Use your stiff brush on the cassette — scrub between the cogs to dislodge compacted grime. Use the toothbrush on the jockey wheels. These two areas collect more contamination than anywhere else on the drivetrain and they're easy to miss.

Step 4: Rinse again

Another gentle rinse to wash away the soap and loosened dirt. Quick and thorough.

Step 5: Dry and re-lube

This step matters more than people realise. A wet chain does not accept lube properly. The water dilutes the lubricant and prevents it from penetrating the rollers. Within 20 km of the next ride, you've got a dry chain attracting fresh dirt.

Wipe the chain with a dry rag. Wipe the frame, especially around bolt heads, cable stops, and brake caliper mounts where water pools and sits. Bounce the bike gently on its tyres — this shakes water out of hard-to-reach areas inside the frame and fork.

Once the chain is dry — properly dry, not just wiped — apply your lube. One drop per roller, backpedal slowly to work it in, then wipe off the excess. Excess lube on the outside of the chain serves no purpose. It just attracts dirt. The lube needs to be inside the rollers, between the pins and bushings, not sitting on the outer plates.

That's your quick clean. Ten to fifteen minutes. Done.

The deep clean: a step-by-step process

The deep clean happens less often — every four to six weeks for a regular rider, or immediately after a properly filthy ride. A rain-soaked sportive, a muddy cross race, a gravel ride where you forded a stream. Any ride that leaves the bike looking like it's been through a war.

The deep clean is also your maintenance inspection. You're not just removing dirt — you're looking at every component with purpose.

Set aside 45 minutes to an hour. A workstand makes this significantly easier, but you can manage with the bike upside down on its saddle and bars, or leaning against a wall.

Step 1: Remove the wheels

This is the single biggest difference between a quick clean and a deep clean. With the wheels off, you can access the brake calipers, the inside of the fork, the area around the bottom bracket, and the chainstays and seatstays properly. You can clean the cassette off the bike. You can clean the disc rotors without worrying about contaminating the frame.

Quick-release or thru-axle — either way, this takes 30 seconds per wheel.

Step 2: Rinse and wash the frame

Same process as the quick clean, but more thorough. With the wheels off, you can reach the underside of the down tube, the area behind the bottom bracket shell, inside the fork crown, and the tight space between the chainstays. These are the spots where road muck builds up and where corrosion starts on steel and aluminium frames.

Use your soft brush in the tight areas. Pay attention to cable entry points and the areas around bottle cage bolts — water sits in the bolt heads and causes corrosion over time.

Step 3: Degrease the drivetrain

This is where the deep clean earns its name. A quick wipe isn't enough here — you're stripping the old lube and embedded contamination completely.

Step 4: Clean the wheels

Tyres, rim sidewalls, spoke surfaces, and hubs. Use the soapy sponge. Check the tyres as you go — embedded flints, glass, or thorns are much easier to spot and pick out when the tyre is clean. Check the tyre walls for cuts or bulges. This 30-second visual check has saved me from punctures more times than I can count.

If you're on rim brakes, the brake track gets particular attention. Run your finger along it — you should feel a smooth, consistent surface. Any embedded grit needs picking out with a pointed tool or fine sandpaper.

Step 5: Inspect everything

While the bike is clean and the wheels are off, look at:

  • Cables and housing. Any fraying? Any kinks in the housing? Is the cable moving freely inside? Stiff cables mean it's time for replacement.
  • Brake pads. How much material is left? Are they wearing evenly or at an angle? Uneven wear usually means a caliper alignment issue.
  • Bottom bracket area. Any creaking when you rotate the cranks by hand? Any gritty feeling? A smooth bottom bracket should spin silently with no resistance.
  • Headset. With the front wheel off, does the steerer tube move smoothly? Any notchiness when you turn the bars? Notchy bearings need replacing.
  • Frame and fork. Look for cracks, chips, or stress marks, particularly around the head tube junction, bottom bracket shell, and dropout areas. On carbon frames, a sharp tap with a coin should produce a consistent sound across the surface — a dull thud suggests delamination.
  • Bolts. Give every visible bolt a check with the correct Allen key. Not a gorilla torque — just confirming nothing has loosened.

This inspection takes five minutes. It catches problems that cost hundreds to fix if they go unnoticed.

Step 6: Reassemble, dry, and lube

Wheels back on. Full dry-down with a clean cloth. Chain lube applied to a dry chain. Excess wiped. Brakes checked — squeeze both levers firmly and confirm solid contact. Gears checked — shift through the full range front and rear.

Done properly, your bike should feel almost new.

Drivetrain degreasing done properly

The drivetrain is the dirtiest part of the bike and it needs its own process. Frame wash and drivetrain degrease are two different jobs, and the products are different too.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about drivetrain cleaning — the biggest mistake isn't which product you use. It's leaving degreaser on the chain and then lubing over it. Degreaser strips lubricant. That's its purpose. If you don't rinse and dry it completely before re-lubing, the degreaser sits inside the rollers, breaks down the fresh lube you apply, and leaves you with a dry chain within 50 km.

The chain

Apply degreaser directly to the chain. If you have a chain cleaning device, clip it on and pedal through 30-40 revolutions. If you don't, apply degreaser to a rag and backpedal the chain through it, then use a brush to scrub the chain while continuing to pedal.

Rinse thoroughly. Dry thoroughly. These two steps are non-negotiable.

The cassette

Remove the rear wheel. With the cassette still on the hub, spray degreaser between the cogs and use your stiff cassette brush to scrub between each pair of sprockets. Work from the largest cog inward. The areas between the smaller cogs collect the most compacted grime because the chain rides there most often.

For a truly deep clean, you can remove the cassette from the freehub body — this requires a chain whip and a cassette lockring tool. Removing it lets you clean each cog individually and clean the freehub body itself. You don't need to do this every time. Every three to four months is plenty for most riders.

The chainrings

Degreaser on a rag, wrapped around each chainring as you rotate the cranks. The teeth pick up grime from the chain and it compacts between them. A stiff brush between the teeth removes the built-up contamination.

The jockey wheels

These tiny pulleys on the rear derailleur are the most neglected components on most bikes. They sit directly in the chain path and accumulate an astonishing amount of compacted grime. A thick black paste of old lube, road dust, and fibre builds up between the teeth and around the bearings.

Use the toothbrush and degreaser. Get between the teeth. Spin each wheel and confirm it rotates freely. If a jockey wheel is stiff or notchy, the bearings may need replacement — they're cheap and easy to swap.

The derailleur cage and pivots

While you're at the rear derailleur, wipe down the cage, the spring, and the pivot points. These areas don't need degreaser — a damp rag is fine. Check that the derailleur moves freely through its range. Any stiffness here shows up as poor shifting.

Disc brake care

Let me be really clear about this. Disc brake rotors and pads have one rule that overrides everything else: no oil-based product should ever contact them. Not bike wash, not degreaser, not WD-40, not chain lube, not frame polish. Nothing with an oil base.

Oil contamination on a disc rotor is the number one cause of squealing brakes and reduced stopping power. And it's not always easy to fix — once oil soaks into sintered brake pads, the pads often need replacing entirely. You can try baking the pads in an oven to burn off the contamination, but the results are inconsistent.

The product for disc rotors is isopropyl alcohol. 90% concentration or higher. Spray it on or apply it with a clean paper towel — not a cloth that might carry residue from a previous cleaning task. Wipe the rotor surface until the paper towel comes away clean.

Do both sides of the rotor. Run the paper towel along the edge too.

For the brake pads, remove them from the calliper if they look contaminated (a shiny glaze on the pad surface is the giveaway). Sand the pad surface lightly with fine sandpaper to remove the glaze, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol.

One practical tip: when you're washing the frame and drivetrain, be conscious of where the spray and runoff go. Degreaser dripping from the chain onto the disc rotor below is a common and preventable contamination route. If your bike is in a workstand, drape a rag over the rotor while you degrease the chain, or remove the wheel first.

Drying and re-lubing

You've washed the frame, degreased the drivetrain, cleaned the rotors. Now the boring part that most people rush — and rushing it undoes half the work you've just done.

Drying

Water and bikes are not friends. Water in bearings causes rust. Water on a chain prevents lube adhesion. Water in bolt threads causes seizure and corrosion. Water pooling at cable entry points wicks into the housing and corrodes the cable.

After rinsing, shake the bike — literally pick it up and shake it, or bounce it firmly on both tyres. This dislodges water from inside the frame tubes, from behind the bottom bracket, from the spaces between the headset bearings.

Wipe everything with a dry cloth. Frame, fork, handlebars, seatpost, cranks, derailleurs. Pay particular attention to:

  • Bolt heads and recesses
  • Cable stops and barrel adjusters
  • Brake calliper mounts
  • Around the headset top cap
  • Bottom bracket junction

Let the bike stand and air dry for 15-20 minutes before lubing.

Re-lubing

The chain must be dry before you apply lube. This is worth repeating because it's the most common mistake in the entire cleaning process. A wet chain dilutes the lubricant. The lube cannot penetrate the rollers properly. And the moisture trapped inside attracts dirt within the first 20 km of the next ride, creating the exact contamination you just spent time removing.

Apply one drop of lube per roller. Backpedal slowly through four to five full rotations. Then take a clean rag and wipe the entire outer surface of the chain. The lube needs to be inside the rollers, not on the outside. Excess lube on the outer plates is just a dirt magnet.

Wet lube for winter and wet conditions. Dry lube for summer. If you ride through a mix of conditions — a British spring, for instance, where you get both in the same afternoon — wet lube is the safer default. It attracts more dirt, but it stays on the chain. Dry lube in wet conditions simply washes off and leaves you with metal on metal.

How often to clean

There's no single answer here because it depends entirely on your riding conditions. But here's a framework that works.

After every wet or dirty ride: Quick clean. Rinse, soapy wash, chain wipe, dry, re-lube. Ten to fifteen minutes.

After dry rides in clean conditions: Wipe the chain with a rag. Add a drop of lube if the chain sounds dry. Two minutes.

Every four to six weeks: Deep clean. Wheels off, full frame wash, drivetrain degrease, inspection. Forty-five minutes to an hour.

After any especially filthy ride: Deep clean, regardless of when you last did one. A muddy sportive, a wet gravel race, a coastal ride in salt spray — these all warrant immediate attention.

Winter riding: If you ride through winter regularly, the frequency shifts upward. Road salt, persistent moisture, and cold temperatures all accelerate wear and corrosion. A quick clean after every winter ride is not excessive. A deep clean every two to three weeks is more appropriate than the four-to-six-week summer schedule.

The riders who get the most from their components are the ones who treat cleaning as part of the ride, not as a separate chore. You get back, you put the bike in the stand, you spend 10 minutes. It becomes automatic.

Common mistakes

After years of conversations with riders — on the podcast, in the community, at events — the same mistakes come up repeatedly. Here are the ones that cause the most damage.

Using a pressure washer at close range. Already covered, but it's worth emphasising. This is the single most common cause of premature bearing failure in bikes that are otherwise well maintained. The bearings were sealed for a reason. High-pressure water defeats the seals.

Not drying the chain before lubing. The second most common mistake. A wet chain cannot accept lube properly. The water sits inside the rollers and dilutes whatever you apply. Let it dry completely. Be patient.

Lubing over a dirty chain. Adding fresh lube on top of contaminated old lube does not clean the chain. It creates a thicker layer of abrasive paste. You need to remove the old lube and dirt before applying new lube. A quick wipe at minimum, a full degrease periodically.

Using degreaser on disc brake rotors. Most degreasers are oil-based or leave residues that contaminate brake surfaces. Isopropyl alcohol only. If you're not sure whether a product is safe for rotors, assume it isn't.

Applying too much chain lube. More is not better. One drop per roller, work it in, wipe off the excess. The lube needs to be inside the rollers, not on the outside. A chain dripping with lube collects dirt faster than a dry one and makes the entire drivetrain filthy within a single ride.

Never removing the wheels. If you only ever do quick cleans with the wheels on, you're never reaching the areas where the worst contamination builds up — behind the bottom bracket, inside the fork crown, under the chainstays, and the cassette itself. Wheels off, even once a month, makes a significant difference.

Ignoring the jockey wheels. Those small derailleur pulleys accumulate more contamination per square centimetre than any other component on the bike. They affect shifting quality directly. Five seconds with a brush during every clean.

Using furniture polish or silicone spray on the frame. Some riders spray silicone-based products to make the frame shine. The problem: silicone gets everywhere, including onto brake surfaces and tyre sidewalls. It makes paint slippery to the point where handlebar tape and saddle bags won't grip properly. If you want a shine, use a bike-specific frame polish and keep it well away from braking surfaces.

The clean bike habit

Here's what it comes down to. Cleaning your bike is the cheapest and most effective form of maintenance that exists. It costs almost nothing in products, takes minutes in its quick form, and prevents the kind of wear and damage that costs hundreds to repair.

A clean bike shifts crisply, brakes confidently, runs quietly, and lasts years longer than a neglected one. It tells you when something is wrong before it becomes expensive. And — this part is entirely subjective but universally reported — it feels faster. The placebo effect of riding a gleaming, well-maintained machine is real and it is valuable.

Build the habit. Keep the bucket by the door. Keep the brushes in a bag next to the bike. Make it part of the post-ride routine alongside the shower and the coffee. The riders who look after their bikes well are, without exception, the riders who enjoy riding them most.
