Most cyclists can tell you their FTP to the nearest watt. Almost none of them can tell you their braking distance at 50kph. That imbalance tells you everything about how the sport teaches — and fails to teach — the skill that matters most when the road points downhill.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: the fastest descenders in the professional peloton are not the bravest. They are the best at braking. Vincenzo Nibali — widely regarded as the finest descender of his generation — did not win descents by holding more speed through corners. He won them by braking later, more precisely, and with more confidence than anyone around him. The distinction matters. Bravery without technique is recklessness. Technique without bravery is just slow. But technique breeds confidence, and confidence looks a lot like bravery from the outside.

Every year, the majority of serious cycling injuries happen on descents. And the root cause, almost every time, is braking — too late, too hard, wrong brake, wrong body position. You can fix all of those things in an afternoon. The knowledge has been sitting in motorcycle racing for decades. Cycling just never borrowed it properly.

Let me break this down.

The Problem with How You Were Taught

You were not taught. That is the problem.

Think about it. When you started cycling, somebody showed you how to clip in, how to shift gears, maybe how to ride in a group. Nobody sat you down and explained brake modulation, weight transfer physics, or the relationship between tyre contact patch and braking force. You figured it out by survival — grabbing the brakes when you got scared, letting go when the bike started to do something unexpected, and gradually building a crude approximation of technique through trial and error.

What most people do is grab a handful of brake when they feel the speed is too high. What actually works is progressive application — a gradual squeeze that builds pressure linearly, giving the tyre time to find grip and the suspension (your arms and legs) time to load. The difference between these two approaches is the difference between controlled deceleration and a locked wheel sliding toward the scenery.

Keith Code — the motorcycle coach who trained half the MotoGP grid in the 1980s and 1990s — described braking as "the most dangerous five per cent of riding that accounts for ninety per cent of crashes." The physics are identical on a bicycle. The stakes are only marginally lower.

One Finger. That Is All You Need.

If you are riding modern hydraulic disc brakes and you have more than one finger on each lever, you are doing it wrong.

This is not opinion. It is mechanical fact. Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo all design their hydraulic systems to deliver full stopping power with a single index finger on the lever. One finger generates enough force to lock a wheel at any speed you will encounter on a road bike. Using two or three fingers does three things, all of them bad: it reduces your grip on the handlebar, it reduces your control over the bike's steering, and it makes your brake application less precise because you have less feel through a fistful of fingers than through one.

The exception is rim brakes. If you are still on rim brakes — and there is nothing wrong with that — you may need two fingers on the lever to generate adequate stopping force, particularly in the wet. The cable-actuated system simply requires more hand force than hydraulics.

The setup matters as much as the technique. Adjust your lever reach so that your index finger contacts the lever blade at the first knuckle joint when your hands are in their natural riding position — hoods or drops. There should be a small amount of free stroke before the pads engage the disc, then a progressive build of resistance. If the lever pulls all the way to the bar before you feel bite, your brakes need bleeding or your pads are worn. If the pads engage immediately with no free stroke, the contact point needs adjusting — most hydraulic levers have a small dial or screw on the lever body for exactly this.

Get this right and your braking transforms overnight. Suddenly you can feel the threshold between deceleration and lockup. You can modulate. You have control.

Trail Braking: The Technique That Changes Everything

Here is the single most useful concept you can borrow from motorcycle racing: trail braking.

Conventional cycling wisdom says brake before the corner, release the brakes, then turn. And for decades, that was reasonable advice — rim brakes were unpredictable, tyre technology was limited, and the consequences of braking mid-corner were properly dangerous.

With modern disc brakes and modern tyres, the calculation has changed entirely.

Trail braking means you begin your braking in a straight line — as normal — but instead of releasing the brakes completely before you start to turn, you maintain a very light residual pressure on the front brake as you enter the corner, then gradually release that pressure as you increase lean angle. By the apex of the corner, you are off the brakes entirely and beginning to apply power again.

Why does this work? Physics. When you brake, weight transfers to the front wheel. That weight transfer compresses the front tyre into the road surface, increasing the size of the contact patch and therefore increasing the available grip. A lightly braked front tyre in a corner has more grip than an unbraked one. This seems counterintuitive until you understand that the tyre's total grip budget is shared between braking forces and cornering forces. Trail braking uses a small fraction of the braking budget to increase the total available grip through weight transfer — as long as you keep the braking force light enough that the combined demand does not exceed the tyre's limit.

Motorcycle racers have understood this since the 1970s. Keith Code and his California Superbike School codified it. Every MotoGP rider uses it on every corner of every lap. And yet most amateur cyclists have never heard of it.

How to practise it: Find a quiet roundabout or a gentle bend you know well. Approach at moderate speed. Begin braking in a straight line as you normally would. As you start to turn in, instead of releasing the brake entirely, keep the lightest possible pressure on the front lever — just enough to feel the pads touching the disc. As you lean further into the corner, gradually release that pressure until your fingers are off the lever by the time you reach the apex. Repeat twenty times. Then do it slightly faster. Within an hour, you will feel the front tyre loading and gripping in a way you have never experienced before. That feeling is confidence.

Body Position: Where Your Weight Goes Determines Where You Go

The physics of braking on a bicycle are brutally simple. When you apply the brakes, kinetic energy converts to heat at the braking surface, and momentum tries to throw your body weight forward over the front axle. If your centre of gravity gets ahead of the front axle contact point, you go over the handlebars. If it stays behind it, you stop.

Everything about braking body position follows from this principle.

On a straight road: As you brake, push your weight backwards on the saddle. Drop your heels. Straighten your arms slightly but keep a soft bend in the elbows — locked arms transmit every bump directly to your shoulders and reduce control. Grip the bars firmly but not in a death grip. Your core should be engaged, taking load off your hands.

On a steep descent: Shift your backside behind and below the saddle. Your belly button should be roughly over the bottom bracket. The steeper the gradient, the further back you need to go. On a 15 per cent descent, your chest may be touching the saddle. This looks extreme until you do the trigonometry — on a steep gradient, the effective centre of gravity shifts dramatically forward relative to the front axle. Moving back is not optional; it is physics.

On the drops versus the hoods: The drops give you a lower centre of gravity, better leverage on the brake levers, and a more aerodynamic position. For serious descending, you should be in the drops. The hoods are fine for gentle descents, but when the gradient kicks up and the speed builds, get your hands down. Your braking force is stronger from the drops, your weight is lower, and your control is better.

Phil Gaimon — retired professional and prolific writer on the unglamorous realities of cycling — described descending position as "the thing that separates the riders who are fast downhill from the riders who are merely fearless downhill." He was right. Position is everything.

Braking in a Group: Predictability Saves Skin

Every skill in group riding comes back to one word: predictability. And nowhere is that more critical than braking.

What most people do in a group is ride too close, react too late, and brake too hard. The accordion effect — where a slight deceleration at the front amplifies into a near-stop at the back — is the single most common cause of crashes in bunch riding. And it is entirely caused by poor braking technique.

Here is how to brake properly in a group:

Look further ahead. Do not stare at the wheel in front of you. Watch the riders three or four positions up the road. When they brake, you have two to three seconds of warning before the rider immediately ahead of you decelerates. That warning is the difference between a gentle scrub of speed and an emergency grab.

Feather, do not grab. Light, early braking gives the rider behind you time to see your deceleration and respond. Hard, late braking gives them nothing. Your brake light is your body language — the rider behind reads your posture, your hand position, your speed relative to the group. A gentle feather is visible. A panic grab is a crash trigger.

Soft-pedal first. Often you do not need the brakes at all. The aerodynamic drag of sitting up slightly and the mechanical drag of freewheeling are enough to match a gentle deceleration in the group. Save the brakes for when you actually need to lose speed, not just match a slight slowing.

Call it. If you must brake hard, shout "slowing" or "stopping." A verbal warning reaches riders five positions back. A hand signal reaches one, maybe two. In the real world of bunch riding, the voice is faster and more reliable than the hand.

Emergency Stops: Maximum Deceleration Without Going Over the Bars

At some point, you will need to stop as fast as the laws of physics allow. A car pulls out. A dog runs across the road. The rider ahead crashes. You need every millimetre of braking distance, and you need to stay upright while you use it.

Here is the technique, step by step:

  1. Weight back immediately. Before you even think about the levers, shift your mass backwards. Arms straight, hips behind the saddle, heels dropped.
  2. Both brakes simultaneously. Apply both levers at the same time, with roughly 70 per cent of the pressure on the front and 30 per cent on the rear.
  3. Progressive squeeze, not a grab. Even in an emergency, a progressive application in the first half-second gives the tyres time to find grip. A grab locks a wheel instantly, and a locked wheel on tarmac has less stopping power than a rolling one at the threshold of adhesion.
  4. Feel for the rear. If the rear wheel starts to lift or skip, you are at the limit of front brake adhesion with your current weight distribution. Ease the front brake fractionally and push your weight further back.
  5. Straight line only. Maximum braking happens in a straight line. If you need to swerve and brake, you can do one well but not both simultaneously. Choose the one that keeps you safest.

The maximum deceleration a road bike can achieve on dry tarmac is approximately 0.8g — that is, decelerating at roughly 8 metres per second squared. From 40kph, that gives you a stopping distance of about 7.7 metres, or roughly four bike lengths. From 50kph, it is closer to 12 metres. From 60kph downhill, it is nearly 17 metres.

Most riders achieve nothing close to these numbers because they never practise emergency stops. Their actual braking distance is double the theoretical maximum — because they react late, brake poorly, and do not trust the front brake.

Wet Weather: Everything You Know Gets Worse

Rain changes the entire braking equation. And the magnitude of the change depends on whether you are running disc brakes or rim brakes.

Disc brakes in the wet: Stopping distance increases by roughly 30-50 per cent compared to dry conditions. The disc rotor sits in the centre of the wheel, partially shielded from road spray, and the hydraulic system delivers consistent power regardless of conditions. The reduction in performance comes primarily from reduced tyre grip on the wet road surface, not from the brake mechanism itself.

Rim brakes in the wet: Stopping distance can increase by 200-300 per cent. The aluminium or carbon braking surface is fully exposed to water and road grime. The first one to two seconds of brake application are essentially doing nothing useful — the pads are wiping water off the rim rather than generating friction. Only after the surface clears do the brakes begin to bite. This delay is terrifying the first time you experience it at speed, and it never entirely goes away.

The clearance technique: In wet conditions, periodically drag the brakes lightly — just enough to wipe the water film off the braking surface without actually slowing down. This keeps the surfaces primed so that when you do need to brake, the response is immediate rather than delayed. On rim brakes, this technique is essential. On disc brakes, it is still worthwhile.

Tyre pressure matters more in the wet. Drop your tyre pressure by 5-10 psi from your dry setup. The lower pressure increases the contact patch, which means more rubber on the road and more grip available for both cornering and braking. Check our tyre pressure guide for the specific numbers.

Painted lines, manhole covers, and metal surfaces become ice rinks in the wet. Avoid braking on them entirely. If you must cross them, do so upright and in a straight line with no brake input.

The Cornering Rule: Brake Before, Not During

This is the oldest rule in cycling descending, and it is mostly correct — with one important refinement.

The principle is sound: you should complete the majority of your braking in a straight line before you enter a corner. Straight-line braking allows you to use the tyre's full grip budget for deceleration. Once you start to lean, the grip budget is shared between braking and cornering forces. Demand too much of both simultaneously and you exceed the tyre's adhesion limit. The front wheel washes out and you crash.

The refinement is trail braking, as described above. You are not slamming the brakes on mid-corner. You are carrying a whisper of residual front brake pressure into the early phase of the turn, then releasing it progressively as lean angle increases. The distinction is crucial. One is reckless. The other is advanced technique used by every professional motorcycle racer and an increasing number of professional cyclists.

The sequence for a descending corner:

  1. Assess the corner from a distance — read the road surface, the camber, the radius, the exit
  2. Begin braking in a straight line, well before the turn-in point
  3. Scrub to your target entry speed
  4. As you begin to turn in, maintain very light front brake pressure
  5. Release the brake progressively as you lean, aiming to be completely off the brakes by the apex
  6. Begin pedalling or coasting through the exit as you stand the bike up

Get this sequence right and you will carry more speed through corners with more control and more confidence than riders who brake hard, release entirely, and then coast nervously through the turn hoping for the best.

The Masters Perspective: What Changes After 40

Here is where this gets personal. If you are reading this site, there is a good chance you are north of 35. And two things change with age that directly affect your braking.

Reaction time. Research published in the Journal of Gerontology shows that simple reaction time increases by approximately 0.5 milliseconds per year from age 20 onward. By 50, you are roughly 15 milliseconds slower to react than you were at 20. That sounds trivial — and in most life situations, it is. But at 60kph, 15 milliseconds is an extra 25 centimetres of travel before you even begin to squeeze the lever. Over a lifetime of descending, that adds up.

Grip strength. Maximal grip strength declines by approximately 1-2 per cent per year after 50, according to data from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. On a long descent with repeated braking, hand fatigue sets in earlier. Your ability to modulate precisely degrades as your forearms tire.

How to compensate:

  • Increase your following distance. Give yourself an extra bike length in group rides. The reaction time deficit disappears if you have more space.
  • Use one-finger braking. If you are still using two or three fingers per lever, you are working harder than necessary. One finger is less fatiguing and more precise.
  • Maintain grip and forearm strength. A simple grip trainer used for five minutes daily — or even just squeezing a tennis ball while watching television — preserves the hand strength that matters on long descents.
  • Brake earlier, not harder. The masters advantage is experience. You read roads better, you anticipate corners earlier, you know when something feels wrong. Use that knowledge to begin braking 10 metres sooner rather than trying to match the braking points of riders 20 years younger.

Drills That Build Real Confidence

Reading about braking is useful. Practising braking is transformative. Here are four drills you can do in an empty car park in 30 minutes.

Drill 1: The Line Stop

Mark a line on the ground with chalk or tape. Approach it at 20kph. Brake progressively and aim to stop with your front wheel exactly on the line. Repeat ten times. Then increase to 25kph. Then 30kph. You will learn two things: your actual braking distance (which is probably double what you assumed), and the feeling of threshold braking — the point where you are decelerating as hard as possible without locking a wheel.

Drill 2: Rear Wheel Lift

On a flat, smooth surface, apply the front brake progressively until you feel the rear wheel begin to unweight. The moment you feel it, ease off. Repeat until you can find that point consistently. This teaches you the absolute limit of front brake application and trains the instinct to release rather than freeze when you feel the rear lifting. Start at walking pace and build up gradually.

Drill 3: One-Handed Braking

Ride at moderate speed and brake using only the front brake with one finger. Then only the rear brake with one finger. Then both together. This drill isolates each brake's contribution and teaches you exactly what each lever does. Most riders discover that they have been over-relying on the rear brake their entire cycling life.

Drill 4: The Corner Entry

Find a gentle curve — a roundabout or a quiet bend. Approach at a comfortable speed. Practise the trail braking sequence: brake in a straight line, maintain light pressure as you turn in, release progressively through the corner. Focus on keeping the pressure absolutely feather-light during the turn. If the bars feel heavy or the bike resists turning, you are carrying too much brake pressure into the corner — release earlier next time.

Thirty minutes of these four drills will teach you more about braking than five years of commuting and weekend riding combined. And the confidence that comes from knowing your actual braking capability — not guessing at it — is the foundation of faster, safer descending.

The Confidence Connection

Here is the thing nobody talks about at the coffee stop. Confidence on a descent is not a personality trait. It is a skill deficit.

The riders who bomb descents are not inherently braver than you. They simply trust their ability to slow down. They know their braking distance. They know what their tyres will do in a corner. They know exactly how hard they can squeeze before a wheel locks. And because they know those things — because they have practised them — they can commit to a line, carry speed, and look relaxed doing it.

You do not need to be fearless. You need to be competent. And competence at braking is available to anyone willing to spend 30 minutes in a car park with a chalk line.
