Braking confidence is not permission to brake later. It is the ability to make a predictable speed change, preserve tyre grip and stop inside the road you can see. That begins with equipment inspection, then conservative practice.
This guide covers road bicycles on firm surfaces. It does not replace the bicycle, wheel, tyre or brake manuals, a workshop inspection or coached practice.
1. Check the bicycle before practising
Do not use a drill to diagnose a brake problem at speed. Before riding, inspect:
- pad wear and correct position;
- rotors or rim braking surfaces for damage or contamination;
- lever feel, reach and clearance from the handlebar;
- hydraulic hoses, callipers, cables and housing;
- wheel security and bearing play;
- tyre condition, pressure and tyre-rim compatibility.
Shimano's road brake manual and SRAM's Road AXS manual contain system-specific warnings and service limits. Stop and use a qualified workshop if a lever approaches the bar, braking changes, a wheel does not turn freely or a component is outside its limit.
2. Use both brakes progressively
The useful default is both brakes, applied smoothly. Begin with light lever pressure, build only as the tyres remain supported and release smoothly. An abrupt grab can lock a wheel before the rider has time to respond.
Do not memorise a universal 70/30 split. Forward weight transfer can increase the front brake's contribution on firm level ground, but gradient, surface, load, rider position and tyre grip change the balance. The objective is to keep both wheels rolling and the bicycle stable, not to reproduce a percentage.
Use one or two fingers only as the brake maker permits and as needed to maintain a secure hold and adequate control. Lever reach, hydraulic versus cable actuation, hand size and hand strength differ. If you cannot apply both brakes comfortably, have the fit and system checked.
3. Body position supports control
Keep the head up, look where you intend to stop and maintain a secure, relaxed hold on the bars. Brace through the feet and allow the hips to move rearward as deceleration and gradient require, without locking the elbows or placing the body so far behind the saddle that steering or braking control is reduced.
There is no single hoods-versus-drops answer for every bicycle and rider. Choose the stable hand position that gives immediate brake access and complies with the brake and handlebar instructions. Practise that position at low speed first.
4. Brake before the corner
British Cycling's descending guidance advises using both brakes and controlling speed before the bend. The reasons are practical: once the bicycle leans, braking and cornering share the available grip.
Use this sequence:
- Read the surface, radius, traffic, camber and visible exit early.
- Apply both brakes progressively while upright.
- Reach a conservative entry speed before turning.
- Release pressure smoothly as lean increases.
- Hold a predictable line inside your lane and sight distance.
- Add substantial power only as the bicycle becomes more upright.
Trail braking is an advanced technique, not a default instruction for an unfamiliar public road. It should not be self-taught by adding front brake and speed in a live roundabout or wet bend. If it is relevant to racing, learn it with a qualified coach in a controlled setting.
5. Wet-weather braking
Both cited manufacturer manuals warn that wet conditions lengthen stopping and make skidding easier. The amount is not a fixed percentage. Tyre compound and condition, brake system, surface, contamination, load, speed and temperature all change the response.
- increase the following distance;
- begin braking earlier and more gently;
- test response at low speed before a descent;
- avoid abrupt braking or steering over paint, metal, leaves or contamination;
- stop if water, visibility, wind or ice makes the route unsuitable.
With rim brakes, water on the braking surface can delay initial response. Light early contact may help clear water, but do not assume it restores dry performance or continuously drag the brakes. Follow the rim, pad and brake instructions and manage heat on long descents.
Tyre pressure is also system-specific. Do not apply a blanket 5-10 PSI wet drop. Use the Roadman tyre-pressure calculator with complete system weight and measured mounted width, then obey the exact tyre and rim limits. If you compare a wet setting, use only 1-2 PSI changes on a familiar low-risk route and stop lowering if the tyre loses support.
6. Braking in a group
Predictability matters more than proving how late you can brake.
- Look several riders ahead while maintaining awareness of the wheel in front.
- Preserve the gap and avoid overlapping wheels.
- Stop pedalling or reduce pressure early when the group eases.
- Apply brakes progressively and hold a steady line.
- Use the calls and signals from the ride briefing or organiser.
- Do not swerve around a slowing rider or obstacle without a clear route.
A shout is not a universal replacement for a hand signal, and a hand signal is not always safe when both hands are needed for control. Follow the group's agreed procedure and the local rules.
7. A low-risk practice progression
Use a traffic-free, flat, clean area with clear run-off. A qualified coach is the best option when confidence is low, the bicycle is unfamiliar or the rider has a history of falls.
Drill 1: repeatable low-speed stops
Begin at walking-to-jogging pace. Choose a broad stopping zone rather than a single target line. Apply both brakes progressively and stop well before wheel lock or rear-wheel lift. Repeat only while every stop remains controlled.
Drill 2: earlier versus later initiation
At the same low speed, begin braking at two clearly separated markers while using the same smooth lever application. Notice how starting earlier changes the required force. Do not increase speed and braking force in the same repetition.
Drill 3: corner-entry separation
Use a wide, traffic-free practice course. Reduce speed while upright, release the brakes and make a gentle turn. Focus on timing and a steady line, not corner speed.
Stop the session if either wheel locks, the rear lifts, the surface becomes wet or dirty, the brake response changes or fatigue reduces control. Do not practise one-handed braking, deliberate skids or rear-wheel lift as confidence drills.
8. Riders with changing hand comfort or strength
Age alone does not prescribe a stopping-distance increase or finger count. Hand pain, reach, arthritis, prior injury, fatigue and medication can affect control at any age. Useful responses include:
- increasing the following and sight-distance margin;
- having lever reach and brake condition checked professionally;
- using a hand position that preserves immediate access and grip;
- stopping on a long descent before fatigue changes lever control;
- discussing persistent weakness, numbness or pain with a qualified clinician.
Do not compensate for reduced control by copying another rider's braking marker.

- Equipment passes the maker's inspection and service rules.
- Both brakes are used progressively; no universal force split is assumed.
- Most speed is removed while upright before the corner.
- Wet conditions trigger a larger gap and earlier response.
- Practice stays traffic-free, low speed and below the skid or lift threshold.
- Any inconsistent response ends the session and prompts inspection.
