  • Most of the suffering you experience in wind is self-inflicted. Not all of it — physics doesn't care about your feelings. But the difference between handling wind well and getting destroyed by it is technique, pacing, and mental approach. All fixable.
  • I've ridden in every kind of wind the British Isles can throw at a person. Irish roads in February, exposed Welsh coast roads, the fens in Cambridgeshire. Every one of those rides taught me I'd been doing it wrong.
  • Pace by power or heart rate, never by speed. A 25kph headwind ride at the right watts is better training than a 32kph headwind ride that buries you for the return leg.

Nobody enjoys a headwind. Let's get that out of the way immediately. The people who tell you they love riding in wind are either lying or have some personality trait the rest of us don't need to examine too closely. Wind is the one condition that can take a perfectly good ride and make you question why you own a bicycle.

But here's the thing nobody tells you: most of the suffering you experience in wind is self-inflicted. Not all of it — wind is hard, and physics doesn't care about your feelings. But the difference between a rider who handles wind well and one who gets destroyed by it isn't fitness. It's technique, pacing, gear selection, and mental approach. All fixable. All learnable.

I've ridden in every kind of wind the British Isles can throw at a person, which is saying something, because these islands specialise in horizontal air. Irish roads in February. Exposed coast roads in Wales. The fens in Cambridgeshire, where there's nothing between you and the North Sea except flat farmland and your own stubbornness. Every one of those rides taught me something, and most of what I learned was that I'd been doing it wrong.

This is what actually works.

Understanding what wind does to you on a bike

Before we talk about technique, you need to understand why wind affects cycling so much more than other sports. It comes down to one brutal equation: aerodynamic drag increases with the cube of your speed relative to the air.

Let me break this down. If you're riding at 30kph in still air, your speed relative to the air is 30kph. Ride at 30kph into a 20kph headwind, and your speed relative to the air is 50kph. The drag force at 50kph relative airspeed is nearly five times higher than at 30kph. Your legs don't care about your ground speed — they feel the air resistance. So riding into a 20kph headwind doesn't feel like adding 20kph of difficulty. It feels like adding 20kph cubed of difficulty.

This is why a moderate headwind can slow you by 5-8kph at the same power output, and why a headwind that barely moves the trees can make you feel like you've forgotten how to ride a bike. You haven't. Physics is just being physics.

The good news: this same equation works in your favour. Small reductions in your frontal area — getting lower, tucking your elbows in, keeping your head down — produce disproportionately large savings. A 10cm reduction in your height on the bike can save 15-20 watts at the same speed. That's free. No fitness required.

Headwinds: the one everyone hates

Headwinds are the most common wind complaint, and the most commonly mishandled. What most people do is put their head down, push a bigger gear, and try to maintain their normal speed. What actually works is the opposite of almost all of that.

Body position

Get low. This is the single most effective thing you can do in a headwind. Bend your elbows, flatten your back, bring your chin down toward the stem. If you're on the drops, you're already lower than on the hoods. If you're on the hoods, bend your elbows until your forearms are close to horizontal.

You don't need to hold a time trial position — that's not sustainable on a road bike for hours. But the difference between sitting upright with your chest catching the wind like a sail and tucking into a reasonably aero position is enormous. We're talking 30-40 watts at moderate speeds. That's the difference between arriving home feeling good and arriving home wondering if you need to rethink your life.

Keep your shoulders relaxed. Tension creeps in when you're fighting a headwind, and tense shoulders mean a tense neck, which means a tense everything. Consciously drop your shoulders every 10 minutes. Shake out your hands one at a time. Stay loose.

Gear selection

Here's where most riders get it wrong. The instinct in a headwind is to push a bigger gear — to muscle through it, to refuse to let the wind dictate terms. This is ego talking, not physiology.

Shift down. Drop one or two gears from what you'd normally ride at that effort level, and bring your cadence up by 5-10rpm. Aim for 85-95rpm instead of the 75-85 range that most people default to in wind. Higher cadence distributes the load more toward your cardiovascular system and less toward your muscles. Your cardiovascular system recovers between efforts. Your muscles, once fatigued from grinding, don't come back on the same ride.

Grinding a big gear into a headwind feels like you're working harder, and you are — but you're working harder in the wrong energy system. You're burning matches you'll need later, especially if the headwind is on the way out and you need to ride home through it.

Pacing strategy

This is the most important section in this entire article. Read it twice.

Pace by power or heart rate. Never by speed.

Your speed in a headwind is irrelevant. It tells you nothing useful about your effort. A 24kph average into a 25kph headwind at 200 watts is a better ride than a 28kph average at 260 watts, because the second version has you 30% over your sustainable effort and you'll pay for it in the second half of the ride.

The temptation to maintain your "normal" speed is powerful and completely counterproductive. Set your cycling computer to show power (or heart rate if you don't have a power meter) as the primary field. Hide the speed display if you need to. Ride to the effort, not to the number on the ground.

For an endurance ride, hold your zone 2 watts regardless of what speed that produces. For a structured session, hit your interval targets by power. If your threshold intervals are supposed to be at 260 watts, ride 260 watts whether that produces 35kph on a calm day or 27kph into a headwind. The training stimulus is the same. The speed is just a consequence of conditions.

This is where strong riders separate from merely fit riders. The strong ones ride the watts. The fit ones ride the speed and blow up.

The out-and-back headwind trap

Here's where it gets really interesting. If you ride out into a headwind and back with a tailwind, your average speed for the ride will always be lower than riding the same course in calm conditions — even though you have the tailwind on the way back.

The maths is counterintuitive. You spend more time in the headwind (because you're going slower) and less time in the tailwind (because you're going faster). The extra time spent going slowly outweighs the reduced time going quickly. Always. This isn't something you can fix with better pacing. It's arithmetic.

The practical takeaway: don't plan your ride around getting a tailwind home. Plan your effort around the conditions you're actually riding in, moment to moment. If the headwind is outbound, ride conservatively on the way out and use the tailwind return to recover or to do your harder efforts with the assistance of the wind at your back.

Crosswinds: the dangerous one

Crosswinds don't get the attention headwinds do, but they're more dangerous. A headwind slows you down. A crosswind pushes you sideways, and sideways on a bicycle is where the problems start.

Staying safe in crosswinds

Your centre of gravity is high on a bike, your contact patch with the road is tiny, and your wheels act as sails — especially if you're running deep-section rims. A gust from the side can push you a metre off line, which on a narrow UK road with traffic is the difference between a normal ride and a trip to A&E.

The fundamentals:

  • Ride the drops. Lower centre of gravity, better leverage on the steering, more control. If you're on the hoods in a strong crosswind, you're giving up stability for no reason.
  • Grip firmly but don't death-grip. A relaxed but firm hold on the bars lets you absorb gusts without overcorrecting. White-knuckle tension makes every gust a steering crisis.
  • Keep your weight centred. Don't lean into the wind — lean the bike slightly into the wind while keeping your body more upright over the contact patch. This gives you stability without committing your balance in one direction.
  • Anticipate gusts. Crosswinds aren't constant. They gust, and they gust hardest at specific points: gaps in hedgerows, the ends of buildings, bridge exits, any transition from sheltered to exposed road. When you see a gap coming — a field gate, a break in a wall, the end of a row of houses — brace for it. Slight bend in the elbows, firm grip, eyes ahead.

Wheel choice matters

If you're riding 50mm or deeper carbon wheels and the forecast says crosswinds, think carefully. Deep rims in gusty crosswinds are seriously difficult to handle, especially the front wheel. A gust hitting a deep front rim can yank the steering out of your hands.

For consistently windy conditions, shallower rims — 30-40mm — are far more manageable. Some riders keep a set of shallower wheels specifically for windy days. If you only have one set of deep-section wheels and the wind is strong and gusty, consider the turbo. No ride is worth a crash caused by equipment you couldn't control.

Echelons: the group riding superpower

Echelons are one of the most effective — and least understood — techniques in group cycling. In a crosswind, the sheltered position isn't directly behind the rider in front. It's offset to the lee side. If the wind is coming from the right, the sheltered spot is behind and to the left. If you line up directly behind the wheel in front, you're getting barely any draft at all.

An echelon is a diagonal line of riders, each one positioned in the wind shadow of the rider ahead and to the windward side. The formation fans across the road, and riders rotate through the front to share the effort.

Here's the reality for most of us: proper echelons require a wide road, a disciplined group, and practice. On a narrow British B-road with oncoming traffic, a full echelon is impractical and dangerous. But the principle still applies in a smaller way. Even with two or three riders, positioning yourself slightly offset from the wind direction rather than directly behind gives you significantly better shelter.

If you ride regularly with the same people, practise echelon formation on quiet, wide roads. Start with three riders, get comfortable with the diagonal spacing, then add more. The communication required — calling wind direction changes, signalling the rotation — also makes you a better bunch rider in every other context.

Tailwinds: the one nobody talks about

Tailwinds are brilliant. You feel fast. Your average speed is high. Your legs feel amazing. Everything is wonderful.

And that's the problem.

A tailwind flatters you. It tells you you're faster than you are. It lets you hold a higher speed at the same effort, which feels like fitness but is actually just air pushing you along. And because you feel good, the discipline you'd normally apply to your session tends to evaporate.

The tailwind training trap

If you're doing a zone 2 ride with a tailwind, watch your power, not your speed. The tailwind will push your speed up, and the temptation is to ease off and enjoy the free ride. That's fine if recovery is the goal. But if you're targeting zone 2 aerobic development, you need to hold the watts even though the speed makes it feel like you should be going easier.

The reverse trap is just as common: riders see the high speed, feel good, and push harder because everything seems to be clicking. They add 20 watts above their zone 2 target because why not, it feels easy. Then they turn around into the headwind and discover that those 20 extra watts for 90 minutes have cost them the back half of the ride.

Tailwind sections are excellent for recovery intervals within a structured session. If your route has a tailwind leg, plan your easy efforts there and your hard efforts into the wind or on sheltered sections where the conditions are more consistent.

Using tailwinds for speed work

One particularly useful application of a tailwind: high-speed pedalling drills. A tailwind lets you reach speeds of 45-50kph at a moderate power output, which gives you a chance to practise pedalling smoothly at high cadence and high speed without the massive effort normally required. Spin-ups — progressively increasing cadence from 90 to 120rpm over 30 seconds — are easier to do safely and effectively with a tailwind assisting you.

The mental approach: how to stop hating wind

Let me be honest. I still don't enjoy riding in wind. What's changed is my relationship with it. I used to see a windy forecast and feel the motivation drain out of me before I'd even filled my bottles. Now I see it and adjust my expectations before I leave the house.

That adjustment is the entire mental approach. Everything else follows from it.

Reframe the metrics

Before a windy ride, decide what success looks like — and make sure it has nothing to do with speed or distance. Today's goal is to hold 190 watts for two hours. Or to ride at zone 2 heart rate for the full session. Or to practise crosswind handling on the exposed section of the coast road. Or to complete a set of intervals at the right power regardless of ground speed.

When you define the ride by metrics you can control (power, heart rate, cadence, technique) rather than metrics the wind controls (speed, distance, average pace), wind stops being a problem and becomes a condition. Like rain. Like cold. Something you dress for and ride through, not something that ruins your day.

The mental trick that actually works

When the headwind is howling and your speed reads 22kph and everything in you wants to push harder, try this: pretend you're climbing. A headwind at 22kph on flat ground requires roughly the same effort as a moderate gradient at the same power. You wouldn't look at a 5% gradient and think "I should be doing 35kph up this." You'd accept the speed the gradient gives you and ride to your effort.

Wind is just an invisible gradient. Once you accept that, the frustration drops away. You're not going slowly because you're weak. You're going slowly because you're riding uphill. The hill just happens to be made of air.

Building wind confidence

Like any skill, comfort in wind comes from exposure. Riders who grow up in exposed, windy areas — coastal Ireland, the Netherlands, the fens — handle wind naturally because they've never known anything different. If you haven't had that exposure, you can build it deliberately.

Start with moderate wind days, not storms. Ride familiar routes where you know the exposed and sheltered sections. Practise your body position consciously — get low, relax, breathe. Each windy ride builds your handling, your pacing instincts, and your mental tolerance. After a dozen deliberate windy rides, you'll find that what used to feel unrideable now feels like just another day.

Kit and equipment considerations

A few practical points that make a real difference.

Clothing

Flapping clothing is free drag. A loose jersey in a headwind adds measurable resistance. You don't need a skin suit, but a well-fitted jersey that doesn't billow makes a noticeable difference. Zip your jersey up. Close your gilet. Tuck the cuffs of your arm warmers under your gloves. Every flapping edge is wasted energy.

On cold, windy days, wind chill strips heat from exposed skin rapidly. A wind gilet is one of the most effective pieces of cycling clothing in existence — it blocks the wind across your chest (where most heat loss occurs on a bike) without overheating you. Carry one on any ride where the wind is forecast above 20kph and the temperature is below 15C.

Tyre pressure

Lower tyre pressures roll faster than most riders think. In wind, the small rolling resistance penalty of slightly lower pressure is far outweighed by the improved comfort, grip, and control. If you're running your tyres at the maximum rated pressure, drop them 10-15psi and see how the bike feels. On rough UK roads in gusty crosswinds, the extra grip and compliance from lower pressures gives you more confidence and more control.

Deep-section wheels

As mentioned in the crosswind section, deep-section wheels are more affected by crosswinds. If you live somewhere consistently windy and you're choosing a wheelset, consider 35-45mm rims as a compromise between aero benefit and crosswind stability. The marginal aero gains of 60mm+ rims are mostly negated by the instability they introduce in real-world windy conditions — especially on exposed roads.

When to stay home

There's a line between a challenging ride and a dangerous one. Sustained winds above 50kph (Force 7 on the Beaufort scale — whole trees in motion, difficulty walking into the wind) make road cycling seriously risky. Gusts above 65kph can physically push you into traffic or off the road.

Check the forecast before you ride. Not just the wind speed — the gust speed. A 30kph sustained wind with gusts to 55kph is a very different proposition from a steady 30kph. The gusts are what catch you out.

If the forecast makes you hesitate, ride the turbo. There's no training session worth a trip to hospital, and the turbo doesn't care about the weather. The ride will be there tomorrow. The wind, almost certainly, will not.

The bottom line

Wind is the great equaliser. It doesn't care about your FTP, your bike, or how much you spent on wheels. It cares about your position, your pacing, your gear selection, and your willingness to accept conditions as they are rather than fighting them with ego.

The riders who handle wind well aren't the strongest. They're the ones who drop their position, shift down, pace by power, and treat a headwind like an invisible climb. They're the ones who respect crosswinds, anticipate gusts, and understand that the sheltered spot in a group isn't directly behind — it's offset to the lee side. They're the ones who use tailwinds strategically instead of letting them inflate their average speed.

All of this is learnable. None of it requires more fitness. Just better habits, practised until they're automatic.
