Every climb arrives on legs that are already deep in deficit from the last one, and the two signature climbs — the Mortirolo and the Gavia — are the ones that expose every gap in your preparation.

What the Gran Fondo Gavia e Mortirolo Actually Demands
176 kilometres. Approximately 4,000 metres of climbing. A start and finish in Ponte di Legno at 1,258m, with the route threading through some of the most brutal road the Giro d'Italia has ever used.
The route varies slightly between editions, but the defining features are constant. The Mortirolo is always there. The Gavia is always there. And several other climbs — the Trivigno, the Teglio approach, the Aprica — fill the gaps between them. There is no flat section long enough to call recovery. You are either climbing, descending, or riding false flat at altitude. That is the entire day.
The Mortirolo. 12.4km from the Mazzo di Valtellina side. 10.5% average gradient. Maximum pitches above 15%, with a sustained section between km 3 and km 8 that rarely drops below 11%. The road is narrow, shaded by forest, and relentlessly steep. There is no let-up section where you catch your breath and reset. The Mortirolo starts hard and stays hard until the summit, and it has broken professional riders in the Giro — Pantani's attacks here are the stuff of legend because the climb itself is the kind of gradient that strips everything down to watts per kilo and willingness to suffer.
For amateurs, the Mortirolo is the crux of the entire event. It arrives mid-route, when the legs already carry hours of accumulated climbing. Whatever fitness gaps your training left — insufficient low-cadence strength, undertrained sustained threshold, wrong gearing — the Mortirolo finds them. Every single time.
The Gavia. The Passo di Gavia reaches 2,621m. It is the highest point of the day by a significant margin, and the altitude changes the rules. Above 2,000m, your oxygen delivery starts declining. By 2,621m, most sea-level-trained amateurs are operating at 75-80% of their normal capacity. The effort that felt manageable at 1,500m feels desperate at 2,400m — not because the gradient changed but because the air did.
The Gavia is also where the weather turns. In June, the valley is 20-25°C. The Gavia summit can be 5-8°C, with wind chill on the descent pushing it lower. Snow on the summit is not unheard of in early-season editions. The riders who have a gilet and arm warmers stuffed in their pockets are the riders who descend the Gavia safely. The riders who don't are the riders whose hands seize on the brake levers before the first hairpin.
The supporting climbs. The route's other ascents — the approaches to Teglio, the Aprica climb, the smaller cols between the major passes — are individually manageable. But they are not free. Each one chips away at the reserves you need for the Mortirolo and the Gavia. Riders who race the early climbs instead of riding them arrive at the Mortirolo with a deficit they cannot close.
Temperature range. Ponte di Legno sits at 1,258m, so even the start is above the altitude where some riders begin to notice reduced capacity. The route dips into warmer valleys at 400-600m and climbs to 2,621m on the Gavia. A temperature swing of 20°C or more across the day is standard. Clothing choices that work in the valley are dangerous at the summit, and summit clothing is unbearable in the valley. You manage this with layers you can add and remove on the bike, and you plan it before the start — not at km 120 when your jersey pockets are empty.
The Physical Bar: W/kg and Fitness Targets
Your power-to-weight ratio is the single strongest predictor of how this event goes. These benchmarks assume disciplined pacing and consistent fuelling — blow either of those and the brackets shift downward significantly.

Two things to understand about these numbers. First, they are sustained climbing watts on tired legs at altitude — not your 20-minute FTP test result from a turbo session at sea level. Your FTP might read 3.5 W/kg at home, but at 2,400m on the Gavia after seven hours of riding, your real output will be closer to 70-80% of that number. Second, the Mortirolo's gradient severity means your W/kg floor is higher here than for most events with similar total climbing. A 2.8 W/kg rider can pace a 7% climb conservatively. A 2.8 W/kg rider on a 15% Mortirolo ramp needs to produce significantly more power just to keep the pedals turning. Below 3.0 W/kg, the Mortirolo's steepest sections become a gearing and muscular-endurance problem that fitness alone cannot solve.
The 16-Week Framework
Four blocks: Base, Build, Peak, Specific + Taper. The structure assumes you are already riding 8-10 hours per week with some climbing experience. Starting from less than that, add 4-6 weeks of aerobic foundation before week one.
Weeks 1-4: Base
Volume: 8-10 hours/week. Four to five rides. Eighty percent in Zone 2.
The aerobic engine that everything else sits on top of. Your easy riding must be properly easy. If you cannot hold a conversation during your Zone 2 work, you are riding too hard, and you will plateau by week 8. The base block is where most riders lose their nerve — the training feels too easy, so they hammer the Thursday club ride, arrive at the weekend long ride half-cooked, and the long ride becomes a survival effort instead of a development stimulus.
Weekly structure:
- 3-4 Zone 2 rides (1-2 hours midweek, building the weekend long ride progressively)
- 1 quality session: sweet spot, 2x20 minutes at 88-93% FTP — the first introduction of structured intensity
- 1 long ride building from 3 hours to 4.5 hours, with 800-1,200m of climbing
- 1-2 gym sessions: single-leg press, Bulgarian split lunges, core stability, hip flexor strength. Posterior chain support for climbing posture without excessive joint load
Key metric: By week 4, your long ride should be 4.5 hours with sustained climbing at conversational pace. If 4.5 hours feels like a race effort, stay in base longer. The build block does not work on a foundation that is not ready.
Weeks 5-8: Build
Volume: 10-13 hours/week. Two quality sessions appear. The climbing-specific work begins.
This is where the training starts to look like the event. Threshold climbing, VO2max intervals, and a long ride that builds toward the duration and vertical you will face in the Gavia-Mortirolo.
Weekly structure:
- 2 quality sessions (see below)
- 2-3 Zone 2 rides
- 1 long ride building to 5-6 hours with 1,500-2,000m of climbing
- 1 gym session (reduced from base — maintain, do not build)
Quality session 1 — threshold climbing: 3x12 minutes at 92-97% FTP on a real gradient (6-8%), progressing to 3x15 minutes by week 8. Recover 5-7 minutes between efforts. This builds the sustained power you need for 12km of Mortirolo. The gradient demands a near-threshold effort even at conservative pacing — your body needs to hold that output without spiking above it.
Quality session 2 — VO2max intervals: 5x4 minutes at 106-115% FTP with 4 minutes recovery. The VO2max work raises the aerobic ceiling that makes threshold efforts more sustainable. At altitude, that ceiling matters more because the air is doing less of the work for you.
Low-cadence torque work: Once per week, incorporate 4x6-8 minutes at 55-65 RPM on a moderate gradient (6-8%). This recruits type 2 fibres at aerobic intensities and builds the neuromuscular capacity for grinding through the Mortirolo's 12-15% pitches without your pedal stroke falling apart. The Mortirolo forces low cadence onto you — train it deliberately instead of discovering it on race day.
Weeks 9-12: Peak
Volume: 12-15 hours/week. The back-to-back climbing work starts.
This is the block that separates the Gavia-Mortirolo build from a generic climbing sportive plan. By week 10, your weekend is structured: Saturday 5-6 hours with 1,500-2,500m of climbing, Sunday 3-4 hours with 1,000m+ of climbing on tired legs. The back-to-back teaches your body to recover overnight and produce power again on fatigued legs — the exact scenario you face when the Mortirolo arrives mid-route.
The critical sessions:
- Two stacked weekends minimum (Saturday long climbing ride + Sunday climbing tempo on tired legs)
- One over-distance climbing ride: 6-7 hours with 2,500-3,000m of vertical gain
- Low-cadence torque work continues: 4x8-10 minutes at 55-65 RPM on steep gradients, now at higher power targets
- Threshold climbing progresses to 2x20 minutes at 92-97% FTP
If you can access Alpine or Dolomite terrain during this block — or any sustained mountain passes — do it. The bike handling on steep hairpins, the pacing decisions across multi-hour climbing efforts, and the thermal management between valley and summit cannot be fully replicated on a turbo trainer or rolling British hills.
Weeks 13-16: Specific + Taper
Weeks 13-14: One final stacked weekend, ideally on terrain that mimics the route shape — sustained steep climbs early, altitude if possible. Volume holds at 12-13 hours. Sessions tighten to race-pace simulation. One full fuelling rehearsal — 80-90g carbs per hour, electrolytes, real food at simulated feed stops — at race intensity.
Weeks 15-16: Taper. Volume drops 30% in week 15, 50% in week 16. Keep short sharp efforts (3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max) to keep the legs responsive without adding fatigue. The common mistake is panic — riders feel fitness slipping and add volume in the final week. The taper sheds fatigue. A well-executed taper is worth 5-10 watts on race day. A botched one costs you those watts and more, and you feel it at km 6 on the Mortirolo when the gradient kicks above 12%.
Pacing the Mortirolo
The Mortirolo is a 12km climb that rewards patience and punishes aggression. Here is how to ride it without blowing up.
Km 1-3: The opening. The gradient starts at 8-9% and builds. Your legs feel better than they should after the earlier climbing — adrenaline and the sight of the road kicking up do that. Resist the pull. Target: 75-80% FTP. Your VAM through this section should be 15-20% below your peak sustainable climbing rate. You are setting the pace for the next 45-70 minutes, not racing the first five.
Eat before you start climbing. A gel at the base and a full bottle going in. You will not feel like eating at km 8.
Km 3-8: The crux. This is where the Mortirolo does its damage. The gradient hits 11-15% and rarely drops below 10%. The road narrows, the forest closes in, and the gradient feels relentless because it is relentless. Target: 82-88% FTP, accepting that you will need to spike above this on the steepest ramps.
Here is the thing. On a 15% ramp, there is no comfortable gear. Your cadence will drop to 50-55 RPM even with a 34x34 cassette. That is fine. What is not fine is accelerating into the ramp to maintain your valley cadence — that spike costs 15-20 watts above your sustainable ceiling and the legs do not forget it. Let the cadence drop. Stay seated. Weight the front wheel. Grind the ramp at the watts you can sustain, not the watts your ego wants.
The inside line of each hairpin is steeper than the outside — the apex of a hairpin on a 12% section can hit 16-18% on the inside. Ride the outside line. Accept the extra 15-20 metres of road. The energy saved by avoiding those gradient spikes is worth several minutes on the upper mountain.
Km 8-12.4: The upper section. The gradient eases slightly to 8-10% — still steep by any normal standard, but after what you have just ridden it feels almost manageable. Target: 80-85% FTP. Do not accelerate because the gradient eased. Your glycogen stores are depleted, your legs are full of metabolites, and the Gavia is still ahead. Ride the upper Mortirolo at a pace that leaves you tired but functional at the summit — not empty.
The Mortirolo summit is not a celebration. It is a refuelling stop. Eat immediately. Drink. Prepare for the descent. The Gavia is coming.
Nutrition Strategy
The Gavia-Mortirolo is a 7-10 hour day for most amateurs, with the majority of that time spent climbing at moderate to high altitude. A 75kg rider finishing in 8 hours burns roughly 5,000-6,000 kcal. You cannot carry that much food. What you can do is close the gap enough that glycogen stores and fat oxidation cover the rest — and at altitude, where the body burns through glycogen faster, the margin for error is smaller than it is in a valley sportive.
Target: 80-90g of carbohydrate per hour from kilometre one. Not from the base of the Mortirolo. Not from when you feel hungry. From the start. The carbs-per-hour guide covers the gut-training and absorption science in detail.
Altitude changes the equation. Above 2,000m, two things happen to your fuelling. First, appetite drops — reduced blood flow to the gut suppresses hunger signals, and the effort of breathing at altitude makes eating feel harder. Second, glycogen depletion accelerates because the body relies more heavily on carbohydrate metabolism when oxygen is limited. The riders who eat aggressively in the first three hours — while the gut is fresh and the altitude is moderate — are the riders still eating comfortably on the Gavia. The riders who skip food early because the legs feel strong are the riders staring at a gel at 2,400m and knowing it is too late.
Hourly plan:

Pre-climb fuelling. Eat a gel and drink 200-300ml of carb mix at the base of each major climb. Top your bottles up at the last feed zone before the Mortirolo and again before the Gavia. You want to start each big climb with full fuel tanks because eating becomes progressively harder as the gradient and effort combine.
Hydration. 500-750ml per hour in the valleys, adjusting for temperature. At altitude, you may not feel thirsty — cooler air, drier conditions, and reduced gut blood flow suppress thirst signals. Force-drink anyway. Target 500-700mg of sodium per litre.
Pre-race. 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight the day before. Breakfast 3-4 hours before the start — 2-3g/kg of carbs, moderate protein, low fibre, low fat. Italian hotel breakfasts lean towards pastry and espresso; supplement with your own porridge or rice if the spread is thin.
Train your gut to this volume. At least four long training rides in the build phase should include the full 80-90g/hour protocol. The Mortirolo at 15% is not the place to discover that your stomach rejects a new gel brand when the gradient goes vertical.
Common Mistakes
Going too hard on the Mortirolo. This is mistake number one, and it accounts for more blown days than any other factor. The Mortirolo's gradient provokes a fight-or-flight response — riders see 12% on the Garmin and instinctively push harder to maintain a speed that feels acceptable. The acceptable speed on a 12% climb after four hours of riding is slow. Accept it. Riders who race the Mortirolo instead of riding it arrive at the Gavia with nothing left and spend the next two hours in survival mode.
Wrong gearing. A 34x28 cassette on the Mortirolo is a commitment to standing on every ramp above 12% and grinding at 40 RPM. After 60-80km of prior climbing, that standing effort empties the legs in ways that seated spinning does not. Fit a 34x34 minimum. If you are under 3.5 W/kg, fit a 34x36 and feel no shame about it. The riders who finish the Mortirolo seated are the riders who still have legs for the Gavia.
Ignoring altitude. The Gavia's 2,621m summit is not a number on a route profile — it is a 20-25% reduction in your sustainable power. Riders who pace the Gavia on perceived effort instead of power consistently overcook the lower slopes and crack in the final kilometres. Pace on power. Accept that the watts feel harder than they should. That is the altitude, not your fitness failing.
Under-dressing for the summits. The descent off the Gavia at 2,621m in a thin jersey is how riders end up hypothermic. The temperature at the summit can be 15-20°C colder than the valley. A gilet and arm warmers are minimum. Long-finger gloves for the descent. If rain is forecast, a lightweight rain jacket. The weight penalty is negligible. The insurance is significant.
Treating the smaller climbs as recovery. The Aprica, the Teglio approaches, the connecting cols — none of these are free. Each one chips away at glycogen stores and adds to accumulated fatigue. Riders who attack every climb because it is not the Mortirolo arrive at the Mortirolo having already spent the reserves they needed.
Skipping the fuelling rehearsal. Eating 80-90g of carbs per hour on a 15% gradient at 2,400m altitude is a skill that requires practice. The gut, the timing, the products that sit comfortably under that stress — all of it needs to be rehearsed in training. Race day is not the time to discover that your preferred gel makes you nauseous when your breathing rate is at 50 breaths per minute.
Kit, Gearing, and Logistics
Gearing. Compact crankset (50/34) with a 34-tooth cassette as the minimum. Riders under 3.5 W/kg should run 34x36 — and if your frame or derailleur cannot accommodate that, fit a medium-cage derailleur or a GRX rear mech. The practical maths: a 75kg rider (plus 8kg of bike and gear) climbing a 15% Mortirolo ramp at 34x28 needs roughly 340 watts to maintain 55 RPM. At 34x34, the same cadence needs roughly 280 watts. At 34x36, roughly 260 watts. After five hours of riding, those 60-80 watts saved per ramp are the difference between riding and walking.
Check and test your gearing by week 8 at the latest. Your legs need to adapt to the cadence and effort pattern of a wider cassette on steep terrain — it feels different, and different is fine as long as it is familiar by race day.
Clothing. Start with arm warmers and a gilet in the jersey pocket. Add long-finger gloves in the other pocket for summit descents. At the Gavia summit, layer up before starting the descent — at 60 km/h, an 8°C summit temperature delivers wind chill close to -5°C on exposed skin. Riders who layer up at the summit descend safely. Riders who wait until they feel cold are already too late.
For the valley sections, a standard jersey and shorts. UV sleeves are worth considering for the lower-altitude sun — Italian June UV burns through normal SPF quickly, and a sunburned body does not thermoregulate properly.
Bike. Disc brakes if you have them — multiple summit descents on tired hands with rim brakes is hard work, and wet rims on a cold Gavia descent are dangerous. Tubeless or quality clincher tyres with a full repair kit. A flat on the Mortirolo at km 80 with 100km of climbing still ahead is a day-defining problem.
Logistics. Ponte di Legno is a small ski town in the Lombardy Alps. Accommodation books out early for the event — sort this well in advance. Arrive the day before at minimum, two days before if possible. The altitude at Ponte di Legno (1,258m) is enough for a gentle overnight acclimatisation benefit, and the extra day lets you ride the first 10km of the Mortirolo to preview the gradient and the road surface. Knowing what km 3-8 looks like before the gun goes off removes the psychological shock of seeing the gradient for the first time on race day.
Bike fit. A 7-10 hour day on 10%+ gradients exposes every fit issue you have been ignoring. Saddle pressure, hand numbness from death-gripping the bars on descents, lower back strain from the climbing position — anything you noticed on a 4-hour ride compounds by hour 8. Get the fit checked during the build phase. Race day is not the time to discover your saddle angle is wrong for sustained steep climbing.
