Week 13: Volume drops to 7-8 hours. Keep one quality session — 3x8 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max — to maintain sharpness. The long ride drops to 3-4 hours. Easy spinning fills the rest.
Week 14 (race week): Volume drops to 4-5 hours. Two short rides of 60-90 minutes with a few openers — 3x3 minutes at threshold on Tuesday or Wednesday. Thursday is a rest day or a 45-minute spin. Friday is a short ride to check the bike and loosen the legs. Saturday is the event.
The common mistake in the final fortnight is adding volume because nerves say you are not ready. The taper sheds fatigue without losing fitness. Nutrition Strategy
The altitude changes the fuelling equation. At 1,500-2,300m, appetite suppression is common — you feel less hungry than you are. Simultaneously, the increased breathing rate from thinner air accelerates carbohydrate oxidation. You burn more carbs per hour at altitude than at sea level, and you feel less like eating. Hydration. 500-750ml per hour. The dry mountain air at altitude increases respiratory water loss — you lose moisture with every breath that you would not lose at sea level. Sodium intake of 500-800mg per litre is important: the combination of sweat loss on the climbs and respiratory water loss on the cols creates a dual dehydration pathway that plain water does not address.
Pre-race. 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight the day before. Breakfast 3-4 hours before the start — 2-3g/kg of carbs, moderate protein, low fibre, low fat. The September morning in Andorra may be cool enough that a warm breakfast (porridge, toast, eggs) sits better than a cold one. Eat what you have practised. Race week is not the time to experiment.
The altitude appetite problem. Here is the good news: this is fixable. If you train your gut to high carb intake at sea level, the mechanical habit of eating every 20-30 minutes transfers to altitude even when appetite says no. Set a timer on your bike computer. Every 20 minutes, eat something. Do not wait for hunger. At altitude, hunger signals arrive 30-60 minutes after the deficit has already begun to affect performance.
Equipment and Gear
Gearing
Run a compact crankset (50/34) with a 34-tooth cassette as the minimum. If you weigh above 80kg, consider a sub-compact (48/31 or 46/30) with a 34-tooth rear. The Coll de la Gallina at 8 per cent average with pitches to 12 per cent, arriving after 100+ km of climbing, demands gearing that lets you spin at 65-70 RPM without pushing power you no longer have. Fit the cassette in week 5 of the plan. Train on the gearing you will race. The Col d'Ordino and the early kilometres will barely touch your largest sprocket — that is fine. The cassette is insurance for the Gallina, and you do not buy insurance the day you need it.
Pyrenean Road Surfaces
Andorran roads are generally well-maintained — better than the French Pyrenean side roads, comparable to the best Alpine routes. That said, the upper sections of the Port de Cabus and some of the connecting roads have patches of rougher tarmac, and early-autumn rain can wash gravel onto the road at altitude. 25mm or 28mm tyres at 75-85 PSI (for a 75kg rider) give a good balance of comfort and rolling efficiency for the mixed surfaces. If you are used to racing on 23mm tyres at 100 PSI, this is the event to go wider.
Layering for Altitude Changes
September in Andorra produces temperature swings of 15-20 degrees within a single stage. The morning start at 1,000m may be 10-12 degrees. The valley sections warm to 20-25 degrees by midday. The Port de Cabus summit at 2,300m can be 5-8 degrees with wind chill that makes it feel colder. Early-autumn storms — short, sharp, cold — are possible on the highest cols.
Carry always: arm warmers, a lightweight gilet, and a packable rain jacket. The gilet goes on before every summit and comes off in the valley. The rain jacket stays in the pocket unless conditions turn — but if conditions turn above 2,000m, you will want it immediately, not back at the car. A thin merino base layer under the jersey adds warmth without bulk for the cold start and the high cols.
Check the wind chill calculator against the forecast for each col the evening before. Descending the Port de Cabus at 55kph in 8-degree air produces a wind chill below zero. Numb fingers and a cold core affect braking, handling, and power output on the next climb. Dress for the descent, not the ascent.
Race Day Pacing
La Purito does not reward aggression. The event is too long, the climbing is too relentless, and the altitude is too constant for anyone who goes hard early to survive the final third. The pacing strategy is simple in concept and difficult in execution: ride below what you think you can hold on every climb except the last one.
Opening Kilometres to Col d'Ordino
Target effort: 70-75 per cent FTP. The start is at altitude. The legs feel fresh. The field pulls you forward. Ignore all three of those signals. The Col d'Ordino at 5.5 per cent average feels manageable — because it is manageable, at the right power. Ride it 10-15 watts below what feels easy. Your VAM should be 700-800m/hour at most. The riders who attack the Ordino are the same riders who walk the Gallina six hours later.
Port de Cabus
Target effort: 72-78 per cent FTP. This is the highest col of the day and the effort should be the most controlled. The gradient steepens in the final 3km — do not increase your power to match it. Let cadence drop slightly, keep the breathing controlled, and arrive at the summit with a heart rate that is below your lactate threshold, not above it. The altitude is doing enough work on your physiology — you do not need to add to it.
Eat on the lower slopes of the Cabus. Drink before the air dries your mouth. By the summit, appetite suppression will be at its peak — get the calories in while your gut still wants them.
Coll de la Gallina
Target effort: 85-92 per cent of what you have left. This is not a number you can set in advance. It is the honest answer to the question: what can I sustain for 35-50 minutes on 8 per cent gradient after 100+ km of riding at altitude?
Pace the first 3km conservatively. The gradient is above 7 per cent from the base and the temptation to attack is strong — especially if you have ridden the first three-quarters of the event with discipline and feel you have something left. You might. You might also be 10 minutes from cracking. The Gallina reveals the truth, and the truth usually arrives around kilometre 5, when the gradient ramps to 10 per cent and the summit is still 20-25 minutes away.
Settle into 65-70 RPM. If you trained the 2x30-minute climbing repeats at 85-90 per cent FTP, this effort will feel familiar. If you did not, the Gallina will feel like nothing you have prepared for. This is the climb that separates trained from untrained, and no amount of race-day adrenaline substitutes for the specific muscular endurance that only sustained climbing intervals build.
Collada de Beixalis and the Finish
Target effort: whatever remains. The Beixalis is shorter and less steep than the Gallina, but it arrives on legs that have absorbed the entire event. There is no tactical play here. Ride it at a sustainable effort, keep eating if you can, and know that the finish is on the other side. The descent from Beixalis back to the finish should be ridden safely — tired legs and cold hands on a mountain descent are the combination that produces crashes, not climbing.
Common Mistakes
1. Ignoring the altitude. The single biggest error. Riders look at the gradient profile and compare it to events they have ridden at sea level. A 6 per cent climb at 2,000m is not the same as a 6 per cent climb at 400m. The reduced oxygen increases heart rate, accelerates glycogen depletion, and lowers sustainable power. Riders who pace to their sea-level numbers find themselves in oxygen debt within the first two hours and spend the rest of the day managing the consequences.
2. Going too hard on the Col d'Ordino. The first climb, the freshest legs, the gradient that invites effort. The Ordino is not the event. The Gallina is the event. Every extra watt you spend on the Ordino is a watt you will not have five hours later when the gradient doubles and the altitude is still present. Ride the Ordino as if it is a warm-up with vertical metres — because that is exactly what it is.
3. Not acclimatising. Riders who fly to Barcelona on Friday evening, drive to Andorra on Saturday morning, and race on Sunday morning from sea level are giving away 5-10 per cent of their performance. Even 48 hours at 1,000m — sleeping, walking, eating at altitude — produces measurable improvements in blood oxygen saturation and perceived effort on the higher cols. Three days is better. A week is better still. Andorra is a superb pre-event riding destination. Use it.
4. Insufficient gearing. An 11-28 cassette is fine for 5-6 per cent gradients with fresh legs. It is not fine for 10-12 per cent pitches on the Gallina after five hours of riding at altitude. The maths does not lie: a 75kg rider at 34x28 on 10 per cent needs roughly 280 watts to hold 70 RPM. At 34x34, the same cadence requires roughly 230 watts. After 100+ km of climbing, those 50 watts are the margin between riding the Gallina and walking it. Fit a 34-tooth cassette and train on it.
5. Not carrying warm layers. September in the Pyrenees is not August in Mallorca. Summit temperatures above 2,000m can drop below 8 degrees, and a sudden storm brings cold rain that turns a descent from exhilarating to dangerous. A gilet weighs 80g. A packable rain jacket weighs 120g. The cost of carrying them is negligible. The cost of not carrying them is hypothermia on a col, or at minimum a 20-minute shivering descent that drains core temperature and power for the next climb.
Travel and Logistics
Getting to Andorra
Andorra has no airport, no railway station, and one main road in from each side. This is part of its charm and part of the planning challenge.
Barcelona El Prat (200km, 2.5-3 hours by car). The most popular option. Fly into Barcelona, hire a car, and drive north through the Cadí tunnel and into Andorra. The road is a motorway for the first two-thirds and a well-maintained mountain road for the final hour. Most rental companies allow their cars into Andorra without additional charges, but check your contract.
Toulouse-Blagnac (190km, 2.5-3 hours by car). The French approach. Drive south through the Ariège valley and enter Andorra via the Pas de la Casa. This route crosses the Port d'Envalira — at 2,408m, the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees — which is spectacular but adds time and can be slow in traffic. An alternative is the Bourg-Madame route via the Cerdanya valley, which avoids the high pass.
Perpignan (170km, 2-2.5 hours by car). Shorter distance but the mountain roads start sooner. Fly into Perpignan-Rivesaltes, drive through the Cerdanya, and enter Andorra from the south. A good option if you find cheap flights, but the road is slower than the Barcelona route for a similar total journey time.
Girona (260km, 3 hours by car). Further, but if you are combining La Purito with a Girona training camp or a few days on the Costa Brava, the drive is straightforward motorway to the Cadí tunnel and then up into Andorra.
Accommodation
Book in Andorra la Vella (the capital, 1,023m altitude) or Encamp (1,238m). Both are on or near the route, have a range of hotels at reasonable prices, and sit at the altitude that provides natural acclimatisation simply by sleeping there. Andorra la Vella is the larger town with more restaurant and shopping options. Encamp is quieter and sits slightly higher, which may be marginally better for acclimatisation.
Book early. The event weekend fills accommodation across the principality, and Andorra is a small country with a limited hotel supply. September is also the transition between summer hikers and winter skiers, so availability varies year to year.
Arriving Early for Acclimatisation
This is strongly recommended. Arrive 2-3 days before the event — ideally earlier if you can combine it with pre-event riding. Even 48 hours of sleeping, walking, and eating at 1,000-1,300m measurably improves blood oxygen saturation and comfort on the higher cols. If you arrive a week early, ride the Coll d'Ordino, the road to Arcalis, and the Port d'Envalira as day rides from Andorra la Vella. These rides serve as both acclimatisation and course reconnaissance. Andorra's road network is dense and the traffic is light — it is legitimately one of the best cycling destinations in the Pyrenees, and combining the event with a training camp is a natural fit.
Race Day Logistics
Collect your number and timing chip the day before. Check your bike, charge your devices, and lay out your clothing the evening before. The morning start at 1,000m will likely be cool — 8-12 degrees — so a warm-up is important but brief: 15-20 minutes of easy spinning on a turbo or a short loop near the start. Eat breakfast 3-4 hours before the gun. Queue for the start with your pockets packed: two bottles (one water, one drink mix with electrolytes), arm warmers, gilet, rain jacket, and enough food for the first 3-4 hours.

Recovery Plan
La Purito is a deeply fatiguing event. The combination of 4,600m of climbing, 6-8 hours of riding, and the cumulative altitude exposure produces a level of physiological stress that exceeds what the distance and elevation numbers suggest. Recovery is not optional — it is the final phase of the event.
Immediately post-finish (0-60 minutes). Carb-protein recovery shake within 30 minutes. 1-1.2g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight plus 0.3g of protein per kg. This is the window when glycogen resynthesis is most efficient. Follow with a real meal within 90 minutes — something with carbs, protein, and salt. Andorra has good restaurants. Use them.
Day 1 post-event. Complete rest or a gentle 30-minute walk. No cycling. Hydrate aggressively — the altitude dehydration compounds with the event dehydration, and most riders are more fluid-depleted than they realise. Sleep is the single most effective recovery intervention. If you can sleep 9-10 hours, do it.
Days 2-3. Easy spinning only — 30-45 minutes at conversational pace if the legs want to move. No intensity. No climbing. The goal is blood flow, not fitness.
Days 4-7. Gradually reintroduce normal riding. A 90-minute Zone 2 ride on day 5, building to 2-3 hours by day 7. No structured intensity until day 7 at the earliest.
Week 2 post-event. Return to normal training, but monitor fatigue markers — resting heart rate, sleep quality, motivation. If any of these are still elevated, extend the recovery. September timing means you are at the tail end of the season anyway. There is nothing to prove in October that is worth compromising recovery from what may be the hardest single day of your year.
The altitude factor extends recovery timelines. Riders who raced at 2,300m often report lingering fatigue 3-5 days longer than they expect from a comparable event at sea level. The body's response to sustained altitude exposure includes increased red blood cell production, altered sleep patterns, and a mild inflammatory response that takes time to resolve. Do not rush this.
