What the Tour de Suisse GranFondo Actually Demands

160 kilometres. Approximately 3,500 metres of climbing. Multiple passes through the Swiss Alps, with summits pushing above 2,000 metres. Most finishers are on the road for 6-9 hours depending on fitness, descending ability, and how efficiently they manage aid stations.

The route profile is what distinguishes this from events with a single defining climb. Instead of one Alpe d'Huez or one Timmelsjoch that the entire day builds towards, the Tour de Suisse GranFondo stacks multiple Alpine passes back to back. Each one is a 40-70 minute effort at gradients that sit in the 6-9% range with regular kicks above 10%. Each descent drops you into a valley with just enough flat road to refuel, regroup, and start climbing again.

That stacking effect is the physical problem. The first pass feels manageable — fresh legs, cool morning air, the adrenaline of the start. The second is harder. By the third, your legs are carrying four or five hours of climbing fatigue, your glycogen stores are under pressure, and the altitude at the summit is beginning to bite. A useful benchmark: can you hold 75-80% of FTP for 60 minutes at the end of a 4-hour ride? If yes, the event is within range. If that effort collapses after 30 minutes, the sustained climbing blocks in the build phase need to be your priority. Descending competence. The Swiss descents are fast — 60-80 km/h through sweeping corners on good tarmac. The 16-Week Framework

Four blocks of four weeks. Volumes assume a starting base of 6-8 hours per week riding regularly with some climbing. If you are starting from less, add a 4-week pre-base block of Zone 2 volume building before week 1.

Weeks 1-4: Base

Volume: 7-9 hours/week. Four to five rides, 80% in Zone 2.

The purpose here is aerobic capacity and muscular durability. Long rides build from 3 hours to 4.5 hours over the block, ideally on the hilliest terrain you can access. If you are training in flat country, use the indoor trainer with a simulated climbing gradient — 30-40 minutes of sustained 5-7% gradient teaches the legs a different pedalling load than riding on the flat, even at the same wattage.

Anchor session: one long ride per week with 800-1,200m of climbing, building steadily. The climbing should be conversational pace — not tempo, not sweet spot, not "I'll just push a bit harder on this one." Base block climbing is Zone 2 climbing. Riders who hammer the base block are the same riders who plateau by week 9.

Add one gym session per week — single-leg press, step-ups, Bulgarian split lunges, and core stability work. The purpose is joint resilience and postural endurance across a 7-hour day, not peak strength. Keep the load moderate and the rep range at 12-15.

Weeks 5-8: Build

Volume: 9-12 hours/week. Two quality sessions appear alongside the long ride.

Threshold repeats. 4x10 minutes at 95-100% FTP with 5 minutes recovery, building to 3x15 minutes by week 8. Standard climbing interval work. If you can do these on an actual climb — a 15-minute local hill repeated — the specificity transfers better than doing them on a flat road.

Sustained tempo climbing. One session per week of 2x25-30 minutes at 80-87% FTP on a climb or a simulated gradient. This is the effort that mirrors what you will do on each Swiss pass — sub-threshold, sustainable, but persistently hard. The temptation is to ride these at sweet spot or above. Resist it. The event asks for four or five of these efforts in a row. Training them at the right intensity matters more than training them too hard.

Long ride progression. Weekend long ride climbs to 5-5.5 hours with 1,500-2,000m of climbing. Start incorporating fuelling rehearsal — eating 80g carbs per hour on every long ride, testing gels, bars, drink mixes, and timing. What your gut tolerates at hour 2 is not what it tolerates at hour 5, and you need to know the difference before event day.

Weeks 9-12: Peak

Volume: 12-14 hours/week. This is the block that makes or breaks the event.

Back-to-back climbing weekends. Saturday 5-6 hours with 2,000-2,500m of climbing. Sunday 3-4 hours with rolling tempo on tired legs. The Sunday ride is the session that most closely mimics what the later passes of the event feel like — climbing on legs that want to stop, with a heart rate that does not behave the way it did yesterday. Schedule at least three of these stacked weekends across the block.

The over-distance ride. One 6-7 hour day with 2,500m+ of climbing. This is the bar. If you can access an Alpine training camp — the Dolomites, Girona, or even a long day in the Vosges — this ride is the one to build it around. If not, a local century with maximum vertical works. The point is not heroism. The point is knowing what hour 6 feels like on the body, the gut, and the head.

Altitude-specific prep. If you train at sea level (which most of us do), this block is where you start paying attention to heart rate at effort. On your threshold repeats, note the power-to-heart-rate relationship. At altitude, that ratio shifts — same heart rate, less power. Training yourself to pace on power rather than feel or heart rate starts here. If you have access to a simulated altitude facility, even a single session at the equivalent of 2,000m teaches the body something useful.

Weeks 13-16: Specific + Taper

Weeks 13-14: final sharpening. One last stacked weekend with event-specific simulation. Ride a day that mimics the event shape: multiple sustained climbs of 45-60 minutes separated by fast descents. Practice your descent technique through every bend. Execute a full fuelling rehearsal — 80-90g carbs per hour, real food at simulated aid stops, electrolytes in the bottles. Everything you will do on event day should have been rehearsed at least once.

Weeks 15-16: taper. Volume drops 30% in week 15, another 50% in week 16. Keep short intensity — 3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max — to keep the legs sharp. Altitude and Weather

These are the two variables that separate the Tour de Suisse GranFondo from a sea-level sportive of the same distance, and they are the two most undertrained aspects of every amateur's preparation.

Altitude effects on the body. Above 1,500m, reduced oxygen partial pressure lowers VO2max by roughly 3% per 300m of additional elevation. At a 2,200m summit, a sea-level rider's effective VO2max is 7-10% lower than at home. In practical terms: the power you can sustain for 60 minutes at sea level is 15-25 watts higher than the power you can sustain at the pass summit. Most riders discover this as a vague feeling of "heaviness" that they attribute to fatigue. It is not fatigue. It is altitude, and fighting it by pushing harder makes it worse.

The practical fix is pacing. Above 1,500m, reduce your target power by 5%. Above 2,000m, reduce it by 8-10%. Use power data, not heart rate — heart rate at altitude tells you the heart is working hard, but it does not tell you whether the effort is sustainable. Power is the honest number.

Appetite suppression is the second altitude effect that catches riders out. Above 1,800-2,000m, the desire to eat drops. Your brain tells you it is not hungry. Your muscles are still burning glycogen at the same rate. The disconnect between appetite and actual caloric need is where bonks at altitude come from. Eat by the clock, not by hunger. Set a timer for every 20 minutes and eat something. It does not matter that you do not feel like it.

Weather variability. Swiss Alpine weather changes faster than Pyrenean or Dolomite weather. Maritime air meeting continental air over the ridge creates localised storms that appear in 20 minutes and clear in 30. The temperature difference between a sun-baked valley floor and a pass summit in cloud can be 20°C.

What this means for you: layering is not optional, it is the single most important kit decision of the day. A rain gilet that packs to a jersey pocket. Arm warmers on from the start. Long-finger gloves for every descent. If the morning forecast shows any cloud above 2,000m, full-length leg warmers in the back pocket. Cold muscles do not produce power, and a shivering 15-minute descent undoes the climbing work you just did.

The descents themselves are where body temperature drops fastest. You have gone from 350-watt climbing effort with a heart rate of 160 to sitting still at 70 km/h in 10°C air. The thermal shock is real. Put on the gilet before the descent starts, not halfway down when you are already cold. Eat on the descent — the body needs calories to generate heat — and keep the legs spinning lightly rather than coasting.

Nutrition Strategy

The fuelling problem on a multi-pass Swiss event is the same as any other 6-9 hour day on the bike, with one critical difference: altitude suppresses appetite.

On the bike. 80-90g carbohydrate per hour from the start. Two gels and a bar per hour, or a 90g/hour drink mix with solid food every 90 minutes. Three long rides with full fuelling rehearsal before taper week is the minimum. The first time you eat 80g/hour should not be on event morning.

Aid station discipline. Swiss event organisation is superb — the aid stations are well-stocked, well-staffed, and well-placed. The trap is sitting down. Roll in, refill bottles, grab food, top up jersey pockets, and leave inside 5-7 minutes. Every minute sitting at an aid station is a minute the legs cool and stiffen. Eat while rolling the first kilometre out of the stop.

Hydration at altitude. Dehydration accelerates at altitude because the air is drier and respiratory water loss increases (you breathe harder). 500-750ml per hour is the target, weighted towards electrolyte solution rather than plain water. Sodium replacement matters particularly on the climbs — sweat losses are high when climbing at threshold in direct sun, even in cool air.

Pre-event. Carb-load 24-36 hours out: 8-10g/kg bodyweight. A 72kg rider eats 575-720g of carbohydrate the day before. This is an uncomfortable amount of food. Eat it anyway. Pasta, rice, bread, juice — whatever sits well. Riders who arrive at the start line with full glycogen stores have a 90-minute buffer over riders who ate normally.

Common Mistakes

Going too hard on the first pass because it feels easy. The first climb of the day is always the most dangerous one because the legs are fresh, the adrenaline is flowing, and the gradient feels manageable. Riders who ride the first pass 20 watts above target pay for it on the third pass when the same gradient feels twice as steep. Pace the first climb conservatively. Bank the watts for later.

Ignoring altitude until it arrives. Riders who have never climbed above 1,800m assume it will feel like a normal climb. It does not. The reduced oxygen hits gradually, and by the time you notice the heaviness, you have already overcooked the effort. If you cannot train at altitude before the event, at least understand the power adjustment and program it into your head unit as a reduced target above 1,500m.

Dressing for the valley, not the summit. A 22°C start in the valley does not mean it is 22°C at 2,100m. The lapse rate in the Alps is roughly 6-7°C per 1,000m of elevation gained. That sunny valley start can mean single-digit temperatures at the top, with wind chill below zero if it is raining. A gilet and arm warmers weigh 200g total. Hypothermia on a descent weighs considerably more.

Eating by hunger instead of by the clock. Altitude kills appetite before it kills your legs. Riders who wait until they feel hungry at 2,000m are already behind on fuel. Set a 20-minute timer on your head unit and eat every time it beeps, regardless of how you feel. This one habit separates riders who finish strong from riders who crawl the final pass.

Braking all the way down every descent. Swiss descents are well-surfaced, the corners are properly cambered, and the sightlines are generally good. Riders who feather the brakes from summit to valley arrive with forearm pump, cold hands, and 10-15 minutes of lost time. Brake hard before the corner, not through it. Release, commit, accelerate out. If your descending needs work, the descending guide is worth reading before you travel.

Skipping the over-distance ride. 160km and 3,500m in a day is 6-9 hours on the bike. If your longest training ride is 4 hours, you are guessing about how hour 6 feels. Riders who guess wrong walk the final pass. Make the time for one 6-7 hour day in the peak block. It is the single most important session in the build.

Kit, Gearing, and Logistics

Bike. A road bike with disc brakes is the strong preference for this event. The descents are long, fast, and potentially wet — rim brakes on carbon wheels in rain on a 10-minute Swiss descent is not where you want to discover the limits of your braking. Tubeless tyres with sealant; the road surfaces are excellent but puncture flats at km 120 on a mountain pass are a day-ending problem without spare tubes.

Gearing. 34x34 is the sensible floor. Swiss passes include sustained pitches above 9%, and at hour 5 with 2,500m of climbing in the legs, that gradient asks for lower gears than you would choose on fresh legs at home. If your bike runs a standard chainset, swap the cassette to a 34 before April. Test the shifting under load — a derailleur that cannot reach the 34 tooth cog is a mechanical problem you do not want to solve on a 9% ramp at 2,000m.

Clothing layers. The non-negotiable kit list: lightweight rain gilet (packable to jersey pocket), arm warmers, long-finger gloves for descents, and a base layer that wicks when climbing and insulates when descending. If the forecast shows any cloud at altitude, add leg warmers or knee warmers. Swiss events often provide cloakroom service at the start — use it for post-ride dry clothing rather than stuffing your jersey pockets with items you will not need until after the finish.

Hydration carry. Two large bottles minimum. Swiss aid stations are reliable but gaps can stretch 40-50km, and at altitude in warm conditions you will drink more than you expect. A concentrated electrolyte sachet in the jersey pocket for topping up a flat-water fill is cheap insurance.

Logistics. Switzerland runs on precision, and so does the Tour de Suisse GranFondo. Registration is typically the day before — collect your number, chip, and route information with time to spare. Accommodation books early in Swiss Alpine villages; secure it the moment your entry is confirmed. Event-day parking is orderly but gets tight by dawn. Entry fees are in CHF; budget CHF 120-180 depending on the category and what is included.

Swiss public transport is excellent if you are flying in. Most event start locations are reachable by train with a bike bag, and Swiss rail timetables are, predictably, exact. If you are driving from neighbouring countries, Swiss motorway vignettes (CHF 40/year) are required and available at the border.

Bike fit. A 6-9 hour day exposes every saddle issue, reach problem, and hand-pressure point you have been tolerating on 3-hour rides. If anything has been quietly bothering you — saddle discomfort, numb hands, lower-back tightness — address it in the base block, not the week before. Event day is not the time to discover that your cockpit is wrong.
