Three metrics to track across your preparation:

Do not add volume in the taper. Do not add intensity. Do not test your fitness. Trust the twelve weeks of work. The taper feels wrong -- you feel sluggish, heavy, and slow. That is the fatigue dissipating. Your body is absorbing the training. By race morning, the legs will be there.
Strength Work
One to two strength sessions per week during Phases 1 and 2, dropping to one session in Phase 3 and none in Phase 4. Focus on single-leg work that supports the demands of steep climbing without the injury risk of heavy barbell movements.

Fuelling: The Repeated-Effort Problem
Fuelling for the Charly Gaul is more demanding than fuelling for a comparable Alpine event at the same total elevation. The reason is intensity. The 30 seconds per climb you might lose in speed is irrelevant compared to the muscular cost of grinding a gear that is too heavy on the fortieth wall.
Tyre choice: 28mm is the sweet spot for this course. The road surfaces vary from smooth national roads to rougher communal lanes. Wider tyres absorb the rough sections without meaningful speed penalty. If your frame clears 30mm, that is a sensible choice for comfort over 160km.
Kit and Logistics
Weather: Late August and early September in Luxembourg typically sees temperatures between 15-25C, with the possibility of rain at any time. The Ardennes region sits at moderate altitude (300-550m) and weather can change across the course. Mornings are often cool, afternoons can be warm.
What to wear:
- Start with arm warmers and a gilet if the morning temperature is below 18C. Both are easy to stow.
- Bib shorts are fine for most conditions. Pack a lightweight rain jacket in your pocket or jersey if rain is forecast -- wet descents in the Ardennes at 15C are properly cold.
- Sunscreen regardless of cloud cover. Six to nine hours of exposure adds up.
Travel: Luxembourg is well served by direct flights from most European hubs. Luxembourg City is compact and bike-friendly. A hire car gives you flexibility to recce the course but is not essential -- the country is small enough that a taxi or train can get you to the start. Between climbs, spin easy and eat whatever you can stomach. Common Mistakes
Starting too hard on the early climbs. Fresh legs and the adrenaline of the start line push riders into efforts they cannot repeat fifty times. The first wall at 115% FTP feels fine. The fortieth wall at 115% FTP is where you discover you have been borrowing from the final quarter all day. Ride the opening climbs at 90-95% FTP and trust that the restraint pays dividends at kilometre 130.
Under-gearing the bike. Pride has no place on an 18% gradient at kilometre 140. Riders who bring a semi-compact crankset or an 11-28 cassette to this event spend the second half of the course grinding at 50 RPM, destroying their quadriceps on every wall. Fit the gears you need, not the gears you think you should ride.
Neglecting fuelling after the halfway point. The effort pattern of this event suppresses appetite more aggressively than steady-state riding. By hour five, many riders have dropped from 80g/hr of carbohydrate to 30g/hr without realising it. The consequence arrives 60-90 minutes later as a catastrophic energy drop. Training only long climbs. If you live near a 10km hill and your training consists of repeated rides up it, you are training for the wrong event. Can I do this event on a gravel bike? You can, but it is not ideal. The course is entirely on tarmac and a road bike with 28mm tyres gives you the best balance of speed, comfort, and gearing range.
