  • I recommend this as a first big European sportive all the time. But let me be clear about this — Cyclassics Hamburg is not a climbing event. It's a wind event. The riders who finish fastest are not the ones with the highest FTP. They're the ones who spend the fewest watts fighting the crosswind.

Cyclassics Hamburg is Germany's biggest one-day sportive, and it asks a fundamentally different question to the mountain events most riders train for. There are no Alpine passes, no 45-minute climbs at threshold, no switchback descents where bike handling separates finishers from casualties. What there is: 160km of fast, flat-to-rolling roads through the Schleswig-Holstein wind corridor, roughly 20,000 riders in enormous packs, one vicious late-course climb that catches the underprepared, and enough crosswind exposure to make an aerobically strong rider look ordinary if they cannot hold a wheel. What Makes Cyclassics Hamburg Different

The wind is the course. Forget the elevation profile. On paper, 1,200m of climbing over 160km looks like a recovery ride. In practice, the route pushes north into Schleswig-Holstein — some of the most exposed agricultural land in northern Europe, where westerly crosswinds sweep unbroken across flat fields with nothing taller than a farmhouse to disrupt them. These are not headwinds you simply push through. They are crosswinds that force echelon riding, split groups apart, and punish anyone who cannot hold a sheltered position. The riders who finish fastest at the Cyclassics are not the ones with the highest FTP. They are the ones who spend the fewest watts fighting the wind.

The speed never relents. Mountain sportives have built-in recovery: long descents, technical sections where the pace drops, aid stations at the top of climbs where everyone stops. The Cyclassics has none of that. The road is flat or gently rolling for 155 of the 160 kilometres, and the groups move at 32-38kph for hours on end. There is no natural place to soft-pedal. There is no descent where you can eat a bar and stretch your back. You are producing watts continuously, and the metabolic cost of five hours of uninterrupted aerobic work at 70-80% FTP is higher than most riders expect from a course with so little elevation.

The pack is enormous. Twenty thousand riders across three distances means the road is dense. On the 160km route, you are riding in groups of 50-200 for long stretches, at speeds where a half-wheel overlap or a nervous brake grab causes chain reactions. This is not a time-trial on open roads. It is close-quarters group riding that demands constant spatial awareness, steady bike handling, and the confidence to sit in a wheel at 38kph with 80 other riders around you. If your training has been solo rides and turbo sessions, the pack density on the Cyclassics will be a shock.

The Waseberg arrives when you least want it. The course has one proper climb: the Waseberg, a 550-metre ramp through a residential hillside in Hamburg's Blankenese district, averaging 8.5% with a 14% maximum pitch. On fresh legs, it is a 60-90 second effort that any half-fit cyclist handles. But the Waseberg does not arrive on fresh legs. It arrives after 120-130km of sustained tempo riding in wind, and at that point the 14% gradient hits quadriceps that have been turning over at high cadence for four hours without a single extended recovery. The riders who walk the Waseberg are not weak. They are riders who failed to pace the flat kilometres before it.

The Course: What You Are Actually Riding

Start to Schleswig-Holstein (km 0-40)

The first 40km roll north out of Hamburg through its suburban fringe and into the agricultural flatlands. The road is wide, the groups are dense, and the pace is nervous. Start-wave positioning matters — faster waves get cleaner road and more organised groups. Expect 35-38kph averages in the front waves, 30-34kph in the middle. The primary objective here is simple: find a group that matches your target pace and settle in. Do not chase faster groups in the opening kilometres. The energy cost of bridging gaps at minute 20 is energy you will desperately want at kilometre 140.

The terrain is dead flat with occasional road furniture — roundabouts, junctions, short risers over canal bridges. None of it is physically demanding. All of it requires attention in a large group. Call out obstacles. Hold your line. Do not overlap wheels. The Cyclassics pack is a mix of experienced club riders and first-time sportive participants, and the skill variance is wide in the opening kilometres.

Schleswig-Holstein Loop (km 40-120)

This is where the race happens. Eighty kilometres of exposed Schleswig-Holstein farmland with minimal shelter, long straight roads that run perpendicular to the prevailing westerly wind, and a gradient profile so flat it barely registers on an elevation chart. The challenge is entirely aerodynamic and tactical.

When the crosswind hits, groups fracture into echelons. Riders who know how to position themselves in the gutter — angled slightly downwind of the wheel ahead, shoulder overlapping with the rider beside them — ride at 25-28kph effort while travelling at 34-38kph. Riders who sit square behind a wheel in a crosswind get almost no draft benefit and expend 20-30% more energy for the same ground speed. Over 80km, that difference is the difference between arriving at the Waseberg with a loaded gun or arriving with an empty chamber.

There are feed zones through this section. Use every single one. The flat profile suppresses the feeling of effort — your heart rate sits at 70-75% of max, your breathing feels controlled, your perceived exertion says "moderate." Your glycogen stores say something different. You are burning 600-800 calories per hour at these speeds, and the lack of recovery periods means your body never switches to fat-dominant fuelling. Eat early. Eat often.

The Waseberg and Finish (km 120-160)

The route swings south back into Hamburg, the groups tighten as the road narrows through suburbs, and then the Waseberg appears. You cross the Elbe on the Koehlbrandbruecke — Hamburg's signature bridge, a long sweeping span that is exposed to wind and offers views of the port — and within a few kilometres the road tilts up through the tree-lined streets of Blankenese.

The Waseberg itself: 550 metres, 8.5% average, a maximum pitch of 14% on a curve roughly two-thirds of the way up. Tactically, the approach is straightforward. Shift early. Do not arrive at the bottom in a 52x17 and try to shift under load — the gradient ramps quickly and a dropped chain here means walking. These times assume competent group riding. A 3.5 W/kg rider who spends the day alone in a headwind will finish slower than a 3.0 W/kg rider tucked into an organised group. The Cyclassics rewards tactical intelligence as much as raw power.

The 12-Week Training Structure

Twelve weeks is sufficient for riders with a base of 6-8 hours per week and an established aerobic foundation. If you are starting from fewer than 5 hours per week, add 4 weeks of aerobic base riding before beginning this structure. Check your training stress score weekly to monitor load progression.

Phase 1: Base (Weeks 1-4)

The objective is aerobic capacity and ride duration. You are building the engine that sustains 160km of continuous output.

  • Weekly volume: 8-10 hours across 4-5 rides
  • Long ride: Build from 3 hours to 4 hours by week 4, all at zone 2 (60-70% FTP)

The base phase is where most amateur training plans for flat events go wrong. Riders see the flat profile and assume they need intensity. They do not. The Cyclassics is an aerobic event — your finishing time is determined more by your ability to hold 70-80% FTP for five hours than by your 5-minute power. Build the base properly.

Phase 2: Build (Weeks 5-8)

The objective shifts to threshold endurance and wind-specific power. You are now training the ability to hold tempo for extended periods while managing fatigue.

  • Weekly volume: 10-12 hours across 4-5 rides
  • Long ride: 4-5 hours with the final 60-90 minutes at tempo (76-85% FTP) — this simulates arriving at the Waseberg section with fatigue in the legs

Wind Riding: The Skill That Defines This Event

The single biggest performance differentiator at the Cyclassics is not FTP, not climbing ability, not even nutrition. It is how efficiently you manage the wind. Northern Germany is a wind corridor, and the Schleswig-Holstein loop crosses it broadside. Here is what that means in practice.

Echelon Positioning

An echelon is a diagonal line of riders angled across the road to shelter each other from a crosswind. When the wind blows from the left, the sheltered position is to the right and slightly behind the rider ahead. When it blows from the right, the opposite applies. The key principle: your body should be in the wind shadow created by the rider ahead of you, and that shadow does not sit directly behind them in a crosswind — it sits offset to the downwind side.

In large sportive groups, true echelons rarely form perfectly. What you get instead is a messy diagonal formation where the riders who understand crosswind positioning drift to the sheltered side, and the riders who do not understand it sit square behind the wheel ahead, fully exposed to the side wind, working 20-30% harder for the same speed.

The fix is simple awareness. Before each long straight, check where the wind is coming from. Move to the downwind side of the group. Accept that you may be overlapping wheels slightly (which requires trust and attention) rather than sitting in a "safe" position directly behind someone where the crosswind hits your full body profile.

Crosswind Technique

Beyond positioning, there is a physical technique to crosswind riding that most riders never practise. When a gust hits from the side, your instinct is to fight the bike with your arms. That wastes energy and makes you unpredictable in a group. The correct response is to lean the bike slightly into the wind (not your body — the bike) by applying gentle pressure through the handlebars, keeping your weight centred, and letting the bike track straight underneath you. It is the same technique used in descending corners — the bike leans, the body stays upright.

Practise this on solo rides in windy conditions before the event. Find an exposed road with a reliable crosswind and ride it at tempo, deliberately relaxing your grip, letting the gusts push the bike without tensing your upper body. The riders who look comfortable in Schleswig-Holstein crosswinds are the riders who have trained this response until it is automatic.

Drafting Efficiency on Flat Roads

On a flat road at 35kph, aerodynamic drag accounts for roughly 80% of the resistance you are pedalling against. Sitting 30cm behind a rider's rear wheel reduces your drag by 25-35%. Sitting 1.5 metres behind reduces it by perhaps 10%. That gap — the difference between a close wheel and a lazy wheel — is 150-200 watts saved across 160km. The practical application: get comfortable riding close. Not dangerously close, but close enough that you feel the wind shadow. That means 30-50cm behind the rider ahead, hands near the brakes, eyes on their hips (not their wheel — hips telegraph movement earlier than the wheel does). When you take a turn at the front, pull through for a consistent duration — 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on group pace and wind strength — then swing off smoothly to the sheltered side and drift back through the group.

Gearing

The Cyclassics does not demand climbing gears. A compact crankset (50/34) with a 25 or 28-tooth cassette is more than sufficient for the entire route, including the Waseberg. Use the gear ratio calculator to check your ratios.

For the flat kilometres, you will spend most of the day in the big ring — 50x15 through 50x19, depending on speed and wind conditions. A cassette with tight spacing in the 14-19 tooth range is more useful on this course than one with a 34-tooth bail-out gear.

For the Waseberg, 34x25 gives you a gear ratio of 1.36 — at 70 RPM, that produces roughly 14kph on an 8.5% gradient. If you are concerned about the 14% maximum pitch, a 34x28 gives 1.21, which is more comfortable for the steep section but unnecessary if your legs are properly paced. The Waseberg is a power event, not a survival event. Gear for speed on the flats and accept that the climb is a 90-second effort where cadence drops temporarily.

Fuelling for Speed

Here is the thing most riders get wrong about flat sportives: the fuelling demand is higher than mountain events, not lower. On a climbing sportive, the descents give your gut periodic breaks — 10-15 minutes of coasting where blood flow returns to the digestive system and absorption catches up. On the Cyclassics, there are no descents. You are pedalling and absorbing for five continuous hours. Your gut never gets a break.

Total carbohydrate target for a 5-hour 160km: 350-420g on the bike. That is 14-17 gels equivalent, or a combination of drink mix, bars, gels, and feed station food. Train your gut to tolerate this volume in the build phase. Race day is not the time to discover that 80g of carbs per hour gives you stomach cramps.

Sodium intake: 500-700mg per hour in warm conditions. Late August in Hamburg can reach 24 degrees Celsius, and the sustained effort with no recovery periods means sweat losses accumulate. Find a group that matches your target average speed (check the benchmarks table above for your W/kg) and sit in. Do not chase. Every unnecessary surge in the first hour is a match you burn from a book that needs to last five hours. This is the section where the Cyclassics is won or lost, and the winning move is doing less.

Km 40-120: Discipline. The Schleswig-Holstein loop is where your training either pays off or does not. The pace is steady — 32-38kph in organised groups — and the wind is constant. Ride at 70-80% FTP. Eat every 20-30 minutes. Drink every 15 minutes. Rotate through the front of the group if you are in a paceline, taking 30-60 second pulls and drifting back. When the crosswind hits, move to the sheltered side of the group immediately — do not wait until you are already suffering. If your group splinters, do not panic. Soft-pedal for 30 seconds, look behind you, and the next group will arrive within minutes on a course with 20,000 riders. Latch on and settle in. The worst thing you can do on this section is ride alone.

Km 120-160: Execution. You have 40km remaining and one problem to solve: the Waseberg. If you have paced correctly, your legs are tired but functional. Eat a gel at kilometre 125-130. Shift your mental focus from "sustain" to "prepare." The Koehlbrandbruecke crossing is exposed and often windy — hold your line, stay in the group, and do not let a gust push you into a gap you cannot close. When the Waseberg appears, shift to your climbing gear before the gradient starts, ride the opening pitch seated, stand for the 14% section, and commit. Ninety seconds. That is all it takes. Over the top, spin easy for 2-3 minutes, regroup, and ride the final 25km to the finish at controlled tempo. The streets fill with spectators, the finish line on the Moeenckebergstrasse is fast, and you are done.

How do I practise echelon riding if I have never done it? Find a club that does structured chain-gang or through-and-off training rides. The fundamental skills — holding a wheel at 30-50cm in a diagonal line, pulling through for a set duration, swinging off to the sheltered side, and drifting back — are the same whether the wind is real or simulated. Practise in groups of 4-8 before attempting it in groups of 40-80. What bike should I ride for the Cyclassics?
A road bike with an aerodynamic setup. This is not an event where a climbing bike with a 34-tooth cassette gains you anything. A standard road bike with a compact crankset, 25-28mm tyres, and a position you can hold for five hours is ideal. Clip-on aero bars are not permitted in group riding at this density. Prioritise comfort and aero efficiency over weight.
How do I register for the Cyclassics Hamburg?
Registration opens in late winter or early spring on the official Cyclassics website. The 160km distance sells out — the event attracts roughly 20,000 riders across all distances. Register early. Entry fees are modest by European sportive standards. You will receive a start wave assignment based on your estimated finish time.
